I want to talk a little about emotional triggers tonight. By 'emotional trigger' I mean just that, something/anything, whether it's a photo, a video, or a type of environment, that triggers a sudden, visceral reaction.
Over the course of your life you've accumulated both positive and negative triggers. If you see a certain person's photo you might have a strong negative emotional response; if you visit a certain type of environment it could trigger a strong positive emotional response
I want you to consider the following question:
"How can I decrease or eliminate my interaction with negative emotional triggers?"
For example, if Jade breaks up with her boyfriend, then every item that reminds her of him will serve as a negative trigger. I'd advise her to immediately pack it all away and put it in storage
The difficult part of this question is determining what exactly your emotional triggers are. They're often quite subtle. I'd just suggest paying a lot of attention during your days to see what can shift your mood and then understand why that shift occurred. Comments (13) |

Version Vibrant Logo Revealed
Everything is still of course subject to change, but this is the new theOtaku.com logo for Version Vibrant:
Happy November
I want all of you to set a goal for what you want to have accomplished by November 30th
Comment here then by November 30th I'll post everyone's comments and ask for an update to see who finished
For me, it's a no brainer, I want Version Vibrant either 100% done or so close to done that it's just a matter of polishing up before launch Comments (40) |

What are you dressing up as for Halloween?
If you're not dressing up, are you doing anything special?
I always go to NYC's Halloween parade and enjoy the costumes. I'm not dressing up this year because the server issues kept it off my mind for so long Comments (19) |

I was browsing facebook and fell in love with one of their features. Of course I'd like to modify it and give it an otaku flair, and we won't get it done in time for launch, but I've commissioned someone to start work.
Everytime I get an idea for a new feature, I have to consider at least seven things:
(1) Will the technology be easy to implement and maintain?
(2) Will a lot of people use it?
(3) Is it something that is consistent with our direction?
(4) Is there a humanpower element? (i.e. will it be automated or something that a moderator/editor needs to look at)
(5) Is it something that can help us do a better job for our advertisers?
(6) Will the implementation work from a design/UI perspective?
This last week was one of the worst I've had; I felt like I was trapped in an Itachi Genjutsu
The most difficult moments are those when something bad is happening but (1) there's a great deal of uncertainty about why or how and (2) you have limited control over the situation
Looking forward:
If we're redoing theOtaku, myOtaku, all our code, all our design, we might as well redo our server architecture. This last week has been an unforgettable reminder to do just that.
Aaron and I have big plans and started work before we were even restored. Had our server not returned tonight, we were ready to execute emergency measures and move everything to another company. Now, we can take our time :).
(I will also probably have to delay Version Vibrant because of the whole losing a week thing)
(Also, inexplicably, my camera stopped working. I was at a Naruto party and was looking forward to taking photos for the site, but it just wouldn't turn on. Update: Woah, I just fixed it.) Comments (23) |

I needed to chill out today after all the troubles we've been having, so I bought the new Naruto Wii fighting game.
I'll post a review on theO, but I like what I see thus far. I just wish it was playable online
I played Cassie from our weekly column in Yahoo! chess last night...she was a worthy adversary, but was ultimately defeated...anyone else want to play?

If it weren't for these freak server issues we'd be ROCKING:
(1) I invested in installing two huge technology upgrades to our server. The site will be BLAZING fast once we start to take advantage of these upgrades. You should see some speed even now
I have never been as excited about anything technology wise as I am about these two upgrades. We're going to be able to do things that we've held back on because they'd cause slowdown. It will be glorious
(2) The new "MyOtaku" (or "Spaces") design is done and it is gorgeous
We just have to solve this server thing though and it's difficult, no one seems to know where it's coming from or how to fix it Comments (14) |

What a day...
We had a mini-Otakulypse this morning that resulted in 4 hours of downtime. Such moments are draining for me and take away time from VV
There's a lot of work we need to do on the server so you should expect some downtime in the coming weeks. It'll be time consuming and expensive for me so I don't look forward to it, but I'd rather get it all out of the way before Version Vibrant... Comments (10) |
