Ideas please, what are some things that we could possibly help anime artists sell?
The goal would be to create the largest list possible, no matter the quality of the items. In fact, I'd consider the best entry to be the silliest but still feasible one
Examples:
. T-Shirts with their designs (ala Threadless)
. Posters
. Desktop Wallpapers Sets of original art
. Fan Manga
. Cell Phone Wallpapers
. Mouse Pads
Main Page News Strategy
With the new version of theOtaku, one of the things I want to do is to tighten our main page's strategy.
I'm very fascinated by creativity among otaku, as in not just being a fan of anime or video games but of using that as a starting point for creative expression.
I can see the main page evolving into a showcase for that creativity. Once you have a strategy, everything becomes filtered through that strategy. Here are a few examples:
Old: "Interview with Miyazaki about his upcoming movie"
New: "Interview with Miyazaki about his view on fan art"
Or:
"Interview with top fan artist about Miyazaki"
Old: "Super Smash Bros Release Date Announced"
New: "Man Creates Super Smash Brothers Characters Out Of Legos"
Old: "Rate your favorite anime"
New: "Write a haiku to capture the essence about your favorite anime"
Old: "What's your opinion on this anime?"
New: "Why do so many people cosplay as this character?"
The challenge is coming up with lots of content and features with this strategy on a daily basis. Do any of you have ideas for recurring features under a new "creativity" theme?
I'm on an extended vacation from July 31st to August 18th. Once I return, I'm going to make a huge announcement.
Before that though, I'm probably going to make a couple more huge announcements :).
I'm really not hyping on any of them though, each of the announcements will represent major events that will go down in the history of the network Comments (12) |

My three favorite sites on theOtaku are:
Fan Art | Fan Manga | Wallpapers
I think eCards and Quizzes are fun and they bring us traffic and give people smiles, but I consider them secondary to the three core sections
Cosplay I'm iffy about. It really hasn't taken off compared to the other sites--fan manga already has 4-5x the audience. Are we making any obvious mistakes with it or do cosplay sites have to be really dedicated to get more than 3 submissions a day?
I'm a little uncomfortable with the fan characters category decision, partially because no decision would have been perfect. I added sub-tags to the Fan Characters hub to make going through them a little easier but it's kind of a hack-solution. Comments (17) |

Tag Category Clustering
This will rock so hard when it's finalized. Look at a preview of something I just threw together:
Say you want to view pictures of people kissing but just in the Naruto category. Previously there was no way to do this, now you can tag-filter by category and simply click:
http://fanart.theotaku.com/tags/kiss/26
Or browse Naruto yaoi:
http://fanart.theotaku.com/tags/yaoi/26
Or browse Naruto chibis!!!
http://fanart.theotaku.com/tags/chibi/26
Or browse FMA fan characters:
http://fanart.theotaku.com/tags/fma/224
Tagging just got a whole lot cooler...just wait for me to figure out how to elegantly implement.
This will also solve a huge problem in that, for example, Ichigo is the name of a character in multiple series.
On another note, I had seen episode 00, I guess, of Haruhi...
On a final note, I talked with ElvesAteMyRamen on the phone today about some super-secret plans that will be 5 months in the making. Can't spoil! Comments (9) |

I Want Better Icons...
I'd like if MyOtaku's emoticons were otaku themed--does anyone know any emoticon artists or websites that have impressive otaku themed emoticons?
East Versus West Coast
People in LA/Seattle were so much nicer than I'm used to here in NYC. The difference was almost absurd.
SomeGuy asked about my height...the following video is a good representation:
I can't wait to see pictures from the meetup...Gail is going to post her convention report with a nice photo gallery. If any of you wondered how I look, you'll finally get a bunch of photos (evil grin)
I still can't believe the Haruhi dancers were in Time Square and I missed it.
I buy a lot of bottled water...the reason is that the brain is like 95% water and the moment you become even a little de-hydrated, your mind becomes fuzzier.
Bottled water is expensive though, so I came up with a clever solution. I bought a sports bottle and a HUGE Poland Spring jug. I just fill up the sports bottle as needed.
Gackt is amazing, a rock star. AX was trying to get him and the rest of SKIN to hold a press conference. Sadly, it never got off the ground; I would have loved to asked him a few member-submitted questions. Comments (7) |

Back Home
Hello! I have returned from the west coast to a rainy NYC
