"How Soon Is Now?" remake review
yes, this is me
here's my review for t.a.t.u.'s remake of the smiths' "how soon is now?"
Winfield’s Entertainment Reviews: “How Soon Is Now?” (Originally by The Smiths) Butchered By: T.A.T.U.
T.A.T.U.’s so-called remake of The Smiths’ classic, “How Soon Is Now,” should have never been produced by any record companies, let alone enjoyed by anyone. This “remake” is so terrible, it makes me want to shred up and smoke my copy of the novel, “It,” written by Stephen King. Although it would be a pretty long smoke (considering that “It” is 1,090 pages long), at least it would get me through this atrocity committed not only against Morrissey and Marr, their fans, but music itself.
First off, the guitar part isn’t even close to being similar to The Smiths. In fact, T.A.T.U. screwed it up in the very first measure. In no way was the guitar part originally staccato, nor did it fade out in every single measure of the entire song. Why couldn’t they just keep it that way? If a score isn’t meant to be staccato, it was written like that for a good reason, but obviously, T.A.T.U. couldn’t understand that concept.
Secondly, let’s discuss the vocal part, shall we? In the chorus, “You shut your mouth. How can you say I go about things the wrong way? I am Human, and I need to be loved, just like everybody else does,” the “singers” sound as if the drummer finally lost his mind, and tried to strangle those two to death after they inhaled two more gallons of helium. Quite frankly, if that would happen to be true, I really wouldn’t be surprised, and I really couldn’t blame the poor guy. In fact, I’m amazed that those two got the lyrics right.
Third, “How Soon Is Now” does not in any way sound at least decent in that “style.” It would be like Britney Spears trying to remake a song from The Cure. I guarantee you that if someone like Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, (etc.) remade a song like “Asleep,” “Barbarism Begins At Home,” “Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me” or “I Know It’s Over,” Smiths/Morrissey fans would either put a hit out on that person or commit a mass suicide.
Though these two “singers” have sounded horrible before, using nails against a chalkboard doesn’t even compare to this monstrosity. The only real uses for the album with this “remake” of “How Soon Is Now” would be something to burn if one is out of logs for their fireplace, or something to scrape out the frost buildups from one’s freezer.
