I'll assume that you all know how doragatory of a word "otaku" is in Japanese. Why are we calling ourselves it then? It indicates a person who never leaves their home, and stays inside playing games or watching shows, and have no social life at all. It's also associated with a murderer in the 80s (?) who grew obsessed with loli anime and went around practicing his fantasies on little girls. And now people go around flaunting that they're an otaku? Seriously. If you go to Japan and say that, you'll be insulting yourself greatly. Since it's a Japanese word in the first place, what gives us the right to change the meaning of it to suit our own purposes?
