Even after Michiyo and Yumi left, the Straw Hat crew was different. Sanji seemed less flirtatious with girls; Zoro was even more quiet than usual. Everything just seemed to downplay after they left.
They docked the Merry Go in the harbor of a medium sized city. Everyone set off to do there own thing. Sanji, Nami and Chopper went to go get new supplies. Luffy and Usopp went off to raid some restaurant as usual. Zoro usually stayed on board when the others left. But today, something was different. They had been on the sea for three weeks. Zoro needed some air, so he walked around the town. As he was walking through an outdoor market, someone caught his eye. She had long brown hair, and was wearing a red shirt. She was at a stand wear they were selling scarves. Something about her intrigued Zoro. As she walked away, she dropped a small wallet that looked like it had money in it. He picked it up and tried to catch her. She seemed to realize someone was following her, so she turned down into an alley. Zoro followed. But when he turned into the alley, she was gone. He turned around, only to get punched in the face. He was sent to the ground trying to find out what happened. “Give me back my wallet!” A familiar voice ordered. “What...” Zoro was still rubbing his face. “Oh…my…” the figure seemed to recognize him. “Zoro?” Zoro looked up, amazed at who he saw. “Michiyo!?” he jumped up and the two embraced.
“I missed you…you guys so much!” Michiyo pulled away. Her eyes were sparkling. “You...you look different.” Zoro said looking at her intently. She smiled and said “Yeah, well I’ve been through a lot…” he gave her one more hug. “It was kinda hard explaining to the others about what had happened to you.” he said with a smile. “Well I’m really sorry, I will just have to make it up to you…” they both laughed. “Come on. Take a walk with me.” She grabbed his hand and they went walking through the market.
So, have you found out anything about Yumi?” He asked curiously. Michiyo looked down and sighed. “All I found out is that she works for HIM. HE is a ruthless bounty hunter who has collected over half of the Navy’s most wanted list. I basically went undercover to find out more about HIM. They’re all cold-blooded killers. It was really scary. HE has many, many accomplices.” “Is Yumi one of them?” Zoro asked. Michiyo looked down, and glanced over at one of the booths. She smiled. “What a gorgeous ring!” She said, admiring the tiny silver piece of jewelry with a small green jewel in it. Zoro picked it up and examined it. “I don’t really understand how you girls get so obsessed with jewelry.” He said smiling. “Yeah, look whose talking, ‘earring boy’.” She laughed. He rolled his eyes and took her hand. He gingerly slid the ring on her finger. They were both quiet. Michiyo looked at him. He did the same. He was still holding her hand when the shopkeeper cleared his throat. They both blushed bright red. Michiyo pulled the ring off and handed it back to the shop keeper. She looked longingly at it once more before walking away. “You coming?” she called back to Zoro. “In a minute.” He said, staring at that little ring.
Zoro didn’t bring up Yumi again. He just enjoyed the rest of the evening, walking around with Michiyo. Suddenly, it dawned on Zoro. “The others!” he slapped his forehead. “We need to head back.” Michiyo agreed and they headed back for the Merry Go.
When they got there, Sanji was the only one on the ship. He was elated to see Michiyo. He asked eagerly about Yumi, but Zoro cleared his throat, signaling for him to shut up. After being invited to stay for dinner, Michiyo went to the bathroom to freshen up.
Zoro came into the kitchen. “Something smells good. Where are the others?” he pulled up a chair. “You’re in a good mood. No, the others aren’t back yet.” There was a small silence. “So…how was your day with Michiyo?” Sanji smirked. “What are you talking about?” Zoro looked down. “You have got to be the most stubborn man on the Grand Line!” Sanji was almost laughing. “It’s just so obvious! Just come out and say it!” Zoro looked like his patience was wearing thin. Sanji was struggling to hold in his laughter. “Just admit you love her!” Sanji yelled at Zoro. Zoro slammed his hand on the table. He stood up and glared at Sanji “The only thing I need to focus on is beating my opponents! I don’t have time for something like that! No matter how I feel! I love her? Is that what you want me to say?!” Zoro screamed back. He was right in Sanji’s face. Sanji looked past him and furrowed his brow. Zoro turned to see the door swinging slightly. He ran outside to see Michiyo standing at the bow of the ship. He walked up to her slowly. He came up behind her and put his hand on her shoulder. She violently shrugged it off. She just stared off into the distance. “Michiyo…” Zoro looked at her long and hard. “I don’t really know why I came out to sea anyway. It all just seemed like one big adventure.” Her voice started to crack. “But if it’s all about fighting your way to the top, stepping on anyone who stands in your way. Not caring who you hurt…” her eyes started to water. “Just to be the best?” There was a long silence. “I think it’s about time I docked my ship…permanently.” Zoro was really confused. Was all this about what he had said? She was acting really strange. “Michiyo, I didn’t…” Zoro started. “You didn’t mean it?!” Michiyo finished for him. “Of course you did! I surly wouldn’t want to be in your way of becoming the best!” “Michiyo, what’s gotten into you?” Zoro looked concerned. She put her hand on her head and softened her tone. “I’m sorry. I understand. I…I would a huge distraction for you. It’s fine.” As she walked off, she stopped and said “There are plenty other fish in the sea.” As she walked off, Zoro rubbed the back of his neck and let out an exasperated sigh. He turned around to see Sanji. Zoro put his hand on his sword, ready to kill him, but he felt Michiyo’s bracelet on the handle and just glared. He left without another word
Michiyo sat quietly in the girls’ cabin. A few tears were forming in her eyes. She heard a knock at her door. “Go away.” She said, her face buried in her pillow. She heard the door open. “Michiyo? I came to let you know it’s time for dinner.” She lifted her head to see Sanji. Michiyo sat up all the way and shook her head. Sanji came and sat down next to her. “Zoro didn’t mean any of what he said…” Sanji said quietly. “The reason he said all that, was because I provoked him. I gave him a hard time. He really cares about you.” Michiyo still kept quiet. “I heard what you said to him. There may be plenty of fish, but there aren’t many swordfish.” With that, he smiled and stood up. “So, are you coming to dinner? I’ve made an excellent fish curry!” Michiyo laughed and stood up. As Sanji headed for the door, Michiyo stopped him. “Sanji?” He turned around. She embraced him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you…” she said quietly. She pulled away to see him blushing. She laughed and headed up to the deck.
