Well uh uh baby, I ain't got no plan.
I finished another book recently. Actually, this morning. And it is by far one of the best fantasy-esque novels I've read in a while. Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. The moment I started this I knew that it was going to be awesome. The characters are so dynamic and charming and the story itself is very well done. Beyond that, Kay writes brilliantly. His style is so completely fluid and the dialogue he writes is so witty and natural. It's just so awesome. I mean, you know it's good when you turn the last page and you realize that it's over already, even though you're mind is still thinking about it over and over. What a wonderful book.
Next to that, I saw King Arthur the other night and I was extremely disappointed. The Arthur legends are some of my favorite mythology and although I know the movie is supposed to be based on the scientific explanation of Arthur, it still sucked. It just wasn't done well. Plot holes. Things seemed rushed and out of place. The characters that I've grown to love and cherish had no personality, whatsoever. The battle scenes were amateur and sometimes corny. For that to have been the modern interpretation, there was still a big suspension of disbelief that I just couldn't handle.
But then again, I'm obviously biased here.
It's not like there weren't some cool parts. I'm just upset because I feel like it didn't do the legends any justice at all. It didn't give Arthur any justice - for a man who is suppposed to be the once and future King, the movie Arthur did nothing to fill those shoes. (I have nothing against Clive Owens, by the way. Not his fault the script sucked.)
Lancelot was all right. I love the man who plays him. He does the A&E Horatio Hornblower series, so he will always have my undying devotion. Plus, those butterfly swords kick ass.
Merlin and Guinevere, though also horribly uncharacterized, had some cool make-up.
The man who stole the show for me, however, was the Tristan character. Cool hair, cool attitude, cool bird. Too bad he isn't actually in any legends I've read. Which brings me to another point. No Bedwyr? How can there not be a Bedwyr?
All right, I need to stop. Stupid Saxon dogs.
Modest Mouse. Okay, I know I'm new when it comes to this band (comparatively speaking), but god damn, how cool can they get? Every time I listen to this CD I fall more and more in love with them. I have no complaints, whatsoever.
I still have a ton of work/fun/havoc to do in the Arena, so I should probably get started. Le sigh. Ze life of ze Arcadia is never complete. |
