part 7

Understanding

I would’ve loved to have stayed and talked with Summer longer, but she was starting to yawn. She stretched out on all fours and arched her back just like cat. “Thanks for you company, Artukei. We should do it again sometime. Goodnight.” I got up and started towards the door. “Night, Summer.” Just as I was about to walk out the door, nature’s call gave me a little tug. “Um... Summer? One more question.”
“Sure.”
“Is there a.... a little boy’s room down here?” Just up the stairs from the platform and to the right was the restroom. The ladies room, actually. It was the only one where the girls had gotten the plumbing to work. I felt a little naughty going into the girl’s bathroom. “I just hope none of the others are in here,” I thought. But right after I stepped in, I heard one of the stalls flush. Just my luck. And who should it be? Non other than Giselle. She stepped out and gave a startled screech when she saw me. “I’m sorry,” I said. “I didn’t mean to...” But right in the middle of my apology, her face became filled with disgust and she stormed towards the door, rudely bumping me aside as she did so. “Hey, what is your problem?!” I yelled. She stopped at the door and without looking at me bitterly replied, “You were in my way.” Then she left. Oh, that did it! “That little...!” I marched back outside and saw her walking down the stairs. I called to her, “Excuse me!” But as soon as she heard me, she started running. “Hey, wait! Wait a minute!” But she had already vanished into the shadows. I mumbled under my breath, “Stuck up bitch,” and returned to the bathroom.

When I came out I saw Kanasuki sitting on the stair rail. I could see her more clearly in this light now. Just like how humans individualize themselves by the clothes they wear, the girls all seemed to have their fur designed differently. Kanasuki looked like she was wearing white knee socks, long white gloves, a one piece orange and white swimsuit, and faded orange bands on her upper arms and thighs. “Don’t let her get to you,” she said. “Giselle’s really nice. She’s just a little shy around humans.”
“Shy is putting it nicely. Yeah, I’ve noticed,” I said. “But what about you? You’re not shy at all. In fact, you helped me before you knew I helped Felicia.”
“I like people,” she said. “They’re very interesting. I used to watch them all the time in the park where I grew up.” Humans go bird watching and whale watching and watch all kinds of animals. Yet I never seriously thought that some of them would be watching us. Now that’s ironic. I laughed a little as I thought this. “An avid people watcher, ay?” She hopped down and approached me. “I’ve always watched humans from a distance or in my cat form. And after all these years, there’s still so much about them I don’t understand. You’re the first one I’ve actually met. I have so many things I want to ask you.” Interesting. Whereas the others grew up with humans, Kanasuki grew up only observing them. I felt sort of honored to be the ambassador of my race. “OK,” I said. “Fire away.” She looked at me a little confusedly and asked her first question. “What does ‘fire away’ mean?” Looks like I had my work cut out for me.

Kanasuki’s curiosity and innocence was absolutely charming. I just wanted to hug her. But I’d wait till she got to that question. “One more thing,” she said. “I’ve seen this many times. Two humans will walk up to each other and shake hands in the air. What does this mean?” Shake hands in the air? I thought for a minute about what she was trying to say. “Could you show me?” I asked. Kanasuki grabbed my hand and raised it so it was level with my face. “Like this,” she said. “Oh! That’s called a ‘high five’,” I said. “High five?” she repeated. “It is like shaking hands,” I explained. “It can be used as a greeting, but it’s mostly used as an expression of celebration. Like if you’re playing a game and your team mate makes a point, you give them a high five. It’s like saying ‘Alright! Yatta! You did it!’” Kanasuki’s face lit up with wonder. “Can I try?” I nodded, “Sure!” I raised my hand, but instead of slapping it she gently grabbed it. I laughed at this cute mistake. “No. You’re supposed to slap it,” I said. She cocked her head to the side and gave a confused “nya”. I reiterated, “Slap it as hard as you can.” She drew her hand back and slapped mine as hard as she could. “Good! Moto. Again.” She drew back again and slapped it even harder. “Sugoi! Now let’s try something.” I held my hand up to her level. “Gimmie five!” Slap! I raised it slightly above my head. “Up high!” She had to jump for it, but.... slap! I lowered it to just below my waistline. “Down low!” But before she could slap it, I swiped it away. “Too slow.” She uttered a sad little mew. Then she folded her ears and looked down. “Oops.” I crouched down and patted her shoulder. “No, no. It’s OK. It’s OK. It’s just... it’s like a little game.”
“Nya? Really?”
“Yeah. Do it to me.”
“OK.” She raised her paw. “Gimmie five!” Slap! “Up high!” Slap! “Down low!” I thought for sure I’d get her, but.... swish! With lightning speed, she hid her paw behind her back before I could slap it. “Too slow.” She playfully grinned at me. I couldn’t stand it any longer. I reached out and gave Kanasuki a big hug. She squeaked in surprise like a mouse. “Ask me later,” I said. After indulging her curiosity, Kanasuki and I walked back to her room. “I have more questions,” she said, “but I can’t stay awake any longer.” It was almost 3:30. “Maybe we can go above sometime and you can be my guide.”
“Maybe,” I said. “It was a pleasure talking to you, Kanasuki-chan.” She bowed at her door. “Oyasuminasai, Artukei-sama.” I returned her bow. “Oyasuminasai, Kanasuki-chan.” Then she stepped inside the car and her bright blue eyes faded into the darkness.

I looked at the train cars and tried to remember which one my bed was in. “Well, this one’s Kanasuki’s. The one next to it is Summer’s. This one! This one’s Felicia’s. Hmm. Then that one must be....” The last car on the end had to be Giselle’s. That girl had been nothing but a total bitch to me ever since I got here. Well no more. I had had it up to my eyeballs with her and I wanted to know what was up. I started marching down to the last car. I wasn’t going to sleep that night without an explaination and an apology. But as I stormed down the platform, my anger started to melt as I recalled the events of the night and the stories of the other girls. Humans hadn’t exactly been the kindest creatures to them. Giselle’s history was probably no different. I still wanted an apology, but now I was going to get it with a little understanding. I approached Giselle’s car and gently knock on the door. “Excuse moi? Mademoiselle?” I whispered. There was no answer. Figures. “Giselle..... If you’re in there I just want to say.... I understand. Humans must’ve been very mean to you in the past. Whatever it was they did to you....... on behalf of humanity I want to say, ‘I’m sorry.’ I mean, it’s times like this that I’m really ashamed of my own species. And I mean that sincerely.” Still nothing. “I guess... what I’m trying to say is...... could you give me a chance?” Still silence. “Giselle?........” I looked in the car, but saw nothing but black. “Bon soir, mademoiselle.” I turned around and started walking back to my bed. Really it was me who ended up apologizing. Giselle may never say a kind word to me as long as I live. But if she did hear me,... maybe.... just maybe.....

Just to give you guys fair warning, I'm not going to be here this weekend. I'm actually going to be in California for my sister's recital. Just wanted to let you know where I'll be in case you miss me.

Recall

The girls persuaded me to stay the night with them. There was an old subway train still in the station and each of it’s cars functioned as rooms for the girls. Felicia led me to her car. “You can sleep on my bed tonight,” she said. I saw a mattress at one end of the car that was layered with several blankets. “What about you?” I asked. “Oh, it’s alright,” she said. “I’ll sleep right here.” She grabbed a few of the blankets and laid them near the foot of the bed. The motor that powered the lights must have been connected to a heater as well because I was starting to feel a lot warmer. So I took off my jacket and shoes and sat down on the mattress. I was now wearing only my socks, sweats, and an undershirt.

As I watched Felicia get situated, I still couldn’t believe that she was the white cat that I had saved a few days ago. Felicia; THE Felicia. Quite possibly the main influence of my cat-girl fetish. And she would be sleeping only a few inches away from my feet. The Great Felicia. There was so much I wanted to ask her. “I don’t want to pry,” I said, “but what happened after the Night Warriors tournament? If you don’t mind my asking.”
“Not at all,” she said. She sat down on the blankets and began to tell me her story. “Ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted to be someone famous; someone who was loved by millions. I wanted to be a singer. After the tournament, I used my newfound publicity to finally live my childhood dream. I became a music super-star.” Her eyes started to glitter as she remembered. “It was everything I dreamed it would be. The music, the lights, the cheers of millions of fans. I was here. I had reached the big time. Everything was magic up on the stage. Nobody cared if these ears and this tail were fake or not. At least.... that’s what I thought.” Then her eyes became dull and her ears folded. “When the public found out what I really was, it was all downhill. Records stopped selling and the fans stopped coming.” My brow furrowed and I shook my head. “That is such bull,” I muttered under my breath. “That’s just how showbiz works,” she said soberly. “One day your face is in every magazine, the next you’re lining some canary’s cage.” I couldn’t stand it. “Not on reasons like that! That’s not showbiz, that’s discrimination! You should’ve sued.”
“Sued who? My fans?”
“No, your.... what?”
“The studio didn’t let me go, Artukei. I left. The world just wasn’t ready yet.” I was stunned. “You could’ve fought,” I said. “I would’ve lost anyway,” she said. “Don’t feel sad for me, Artukei. They just weren’t ready. It was a short but glamorous ride and I loved every moment of it. I’ve had my taste of the sweet life. I lived my dream and I have no regrets.” She was being surprisingly mature about all this. It was a very sad story, but thankfully the experience hadn’t left her bitter. Unlike someone else I had met. “How did you meet the others?” I asked. “Summer and I met back when I was still a singer. I was doing my U.S. tour. I met Giselle in Paris about five years ago and Kanasuki’s originally from Osaka but we met here in Metrolex about one year ago. They’ve been like family to me.” Now it was all starting to come together.

As she continued, I started looking Felicia over like the typical male that I am. Even after all these years, she still looked.... perfect! The tournament was at least ten years ago but she didn’t look a day older than when she entered. She was FLAWLESS. A goddess among other nekomimis. As my eyes wandered from her shoulders down to her chest to her tummy to her thighs, I suddenly remembered a rather silly question. “How’s your foot?” I asked. Her face became flushed slightly and she looked at me rather shyly. “A little sore,” she said, “but much better. Thank you.” A legendary fighter and a former pop-diva, but she still needs someone like me to help her out. “I’m sure you’re wondering what I was doing all by myself that day,” she said. Well, to be honest, I was. “The night before,” she said, “I had gotten careless and two men captured me. Needless to say, I escaped. But as I ran into an alley, I wasn’t looking where I was going and accidentally stepped on that piece of glass. When I found you the next day, I was moved by your initial kindness. Then when you tried to pick me up, I became wary. But there was something about you. Call it a sixth sense, but I knew you meant me no harm. And when we got to the shelter, I recognized one of the vans in the parking lot. It was the same kind of van that took me away the other night. I got scared and tried to get away, but again you.....” She stopped and looked at me curiously. “There’s something about you,” she said. “Every time you spoke and every time I looked in those eyes I just.... felt at peace.” She leaned forward and looked directly into my eyes. My head lurched back as I gulped hard not knowing what to expect. Then she put on a friendly smile and said, “You have very pretty eyes.” Like clockwork, I blushed. Felicia giggled. “You’ve never had a girl tell you that before?” she asked. “Sailor Jupiter told me that once,” I said, “but I don’t think she meant it.” Felicia lay down and curled up into a little ball. “Goodnight, Artukei. And thanks again.” Then she closed her eyes. As I lay down I whispered my reply. “Goodnight, my lady. And you’re welcome.”

I was about to doze off when I heard a voice whisper. “Justin.” I sat up and looked around. Felicia was sound asleep. I heard it again. “Justin. Are you there?”
“Ozz?”
“Yes. Where are you? You’re not in the house.”
“Um... something came up.”
“What happened? Are you alright? Where are you?”
“I’m fine, buddy. If Aisha wonders where I am, tell her I’m.... tell her I’m spending the night with some friends.”
“What do you mean ‘tell her’? You know I can’t talk.”
“Well, um... write her a note or something. You know what I mean.”
I was speaking fast and sounding a little nervous. Ozz’s voice became suspicious. “Are you sure you’re alright? Where are you exactly?”
“Don’t worry, buddy. I’m fine. I’ll be back in the morning.”
“OK. See ya later, pal.”

“Psst. Hey.” I must’ve been asleep for about forty minutes until someone started nudging me. “Hey. Guy. You awake?” I rolled over and slowly opened my eyes. “I am now.” I looked and saw Summer sitting next to me. “Hey. What’s up?” She nervously player with her hair like before and whispered, “I can’t sleep.”
“So you woke me up?” I groggily asked. She smiled cutely and nodded. I sat up. “Well, what do you want me to do?” Summer smiled mischievously. “You wanna play with me?” she asked. My brow twisted in surprise. “What?”

“Blackjack!” That was three times in a row Summer beat me. We had been playing cards in her room for several minutes. She was definitely the most energetic of the four, very playful, and quite the jokester. “Felicia said you met during one of her tours,” I said. “Where you from originally?” Judging by her voice and golden locks, I had already guessed that she was from the states. To be more specific, probably California. “I’m originally from southern California,” she said. Yapari! I knew it. “You’re kidding,” I said, “I’m a so-cal native too!”
“Shut up!” she squealed in excitement. Yep. She was definitely a so-cal girl, all right. Her voice had a slight hint of a “valley girl” accent. “Really. It’s the truth,” I said. “Get out! What part?” she asked. “Orange County,” I replied. “I grew up in L.A.,” she said. “About two hours away from the OC. You’re right. The first time I met Felicia was at the Hollywood Bowl about nine years ago. I had heard about her when she was a fighter. She was my idol. The only idol someone like me could have, I guess. So when I found out that she was coming to my home town, I, like, totally flipped out. I had to see her. I didn’t have any money for tickets, but no way was I gonna let that stop me.”
“So you snuck in?” I asked. “Through the artist entrance,” she said. “I got in and started looking for Felicia’s dressing room. Of course it wasn’t long before security spotted me. They grabbed me and started to drag me out. But I kept struggling as hard as I could and kept screaming, ‘Felicia! I have to see Felicia!’ She must’ve heard all the commotion, cuz the next thing I heard was her voice from down the hall. She called to one of the guards, ‘What’s going on?’ The guard said, ‘We just have a little intruder, that’s all.’ Then she started walking towards us. ‘Let me see,’ she said. The guards brought me forward. ‘Felicia!’ I screamed. ‘Look!’ I threw my head back to remove the hood of my jacket and showed her my ears. ‘I’m just like you!’ But one of the guards laughed and said, ‘Nice try, kid. Almost everyone in the audience has a pair of those.’ The jerk. But Felicia knew what they really were. She stared at me in shock for a second and then looked at the guards like all pissed off. She yelled, ‘Let her go!’ and then she called over her shoulder and said, ‘Lorenzo, give this girl a backstage pass.’ It was so awesome! The guards were all like, ‘Huh? What?’ Then she said, ‘This little girl’s very brave to try and sneak in and see my show. I think she deserves it.’ I watched the entire show that night from backstage. It was the best night of my life. And afterwards, Felicia let me come on tour with her. We’ve been inseparable since. She’s been like a mother to me. To all of us. She looked after me, cared for me, she even taught me some of her old moves.” Summer’s story left me in awe. It was a true testament to her courage and Felicia’s kindness.

Now I knew Summer’s story, but there was still one thing that bugged me. “So what was all that ‘Tiger Lilly’ business earlier?” I asked. “Oh, that’s.... that’s just my stage name,” she said. “Stage name? You’re an actress?” I asked. She laughed. “No. I used to be a dancer.” Did I blush? You should know me by now. Of course! “Oh,” was all I could say. Summer caught my prudish reaction and immediately started exploiting it. Putting back on her seductive demeanor, she stood up and smiled devilishly. “You wanna see one of my routines?” she asked as she wrapped herself around one of the poles in the subway car. Her body fur resembled dull yellow stockings, gloves, and an incredibly revealing V-cut swimsuit. Like the kind Nagi wore at the swimsuit competition in “Tenchi Universe.” I tried my best to keep calm. “Hells yeah! No, that’s OK,” I said as I stared down at my cards. But I was just giving her more fodder. “Oh, come on,” she sensually pleaded. “Surely my best friend’s rescuer deserves some kind of reward.” She got down on all fours and crawled up to an inch away from my face. “How about a lap dance?” she whispered. I leaned back and fought to keep my libido restrained. Suddenly, I pulled together my thoughts and added up everything Summer had told me. I cunningly smiled and asked, “How could you have been a dancer if you’ve been with Felicia since you were a kid?” My question brought her completely out of character. Her entire body reacted in surprise. Her eyes widened, ears stretched, tail stood straight up, and lips uttered a small “nya”. Bingo! I had caught her. Then she smiled and quickly kissed my cheek. “A kiss for the smart boy,” she said. “I’m guessing you really are an actress,” I said. “What else could an influential young girl in L.A. want to be?” Summer backed up. “Sheesh! Take all the fun out of it, why don’t ya?” she chided me. “You’re mostly right. I’m an aspiring actress. I’ve never..... did you really think I was a real actress?” She looked at me, her eyes shining. “You’re very good,” I said. “If you hadn’t told me your story first, I would’ve been convinced.” Her cheeks turned beet red and she tried to hide them with her hair. It was such a shy reaction and very out of character for the first Summer I had met. After they came to Metrolex, Summer actually auditioned for a few roles at McMurphy Theater; the most prestigious performance hall in the city. She was very good. But of course, at the auditions, whenever she was asked to remove her ears..... It was just like Felicia. These girls had some real guts. Even after being discriminated and repressed their entire lives, they still had the courage to chase their dreams.

Nah, I'm just kidding. ;) I might've gone a little "prima dona" back there. Sorry bout that. I just get a little discouraged when I don't get a lot of feedback. I'm needy that way. Well, here we go!

Family

“I’m not what you expected, am I?” The beautiful woman stood before me as the fire light danced on her body. After taking a moment to relish this glorious scene, I finally snapped myself out of it and regained my assertiveness. “So you order from the ‘Adam and Eve’ collection. Big deal. What do you want from me?” I asked. She came around from the other side of the barrel and approached me. “Only your attention,” she said. “Well, she’s got it! Undivided, at that!” She came in close as if she was going to kiss me. I warily took a step back. Then she leaned in, put her head over my shoulder, and whispered in my ear, “Thanks for the sushi.” My whole head distorted in confusion. “I’m sorry. I’m confused.” She drew back and smiled at me as her large emerald eyes glinted in the dim light. Then my face stretched as it made room for my eyes. Now that she was closer to me, I could finally see what she really was. That wasn’t a headband on her head, they were WHITE CAT EARS! And those weren’t clothes she was wearing. They were fur! She was a bonafide nekomimi! I stammered as I tried to pull my thoughts together. “Those eyes..... you’re..... that was....... Kitty?” She giggled slightly and nodded. I couldn’t believe it! It all made sense now! No wonder the cat seemed so human. “You were so kind to me,” she said, “I just wanted to thank you in person.” I grabbed the back of my neck and laughed between fragments. “Pssh! I, uh.... ha... it was.... um..... heh........ no problem.” She giggled again as she watched my nervous reaction. And so did my friendly escort.

“So, where am I?” I asked. “Oh right. Sorry about the ‘dramatics’, as you put it,” she said. “We just weren’t sure if you were ready to see us. Summer! Hit the lights!” Somewhere in the distance, I heard the clicks of some switches and the low hum of an electrical motor. Slowly the lights faded in and I finally saw where I was. I was standing on the platform of an old abandoned subway station. No wonder I was freezing. I was underground and surrounded by poorly insulating concrete. “Welcome to my home,” she said. “It’s the old Hamilton Station,” I said as my eyes wandered around nostalgically. “They closed it down several...” But my voice stopped short as I glanced back at the cat-girl. Now that there was enough light, I could clearly see her mane of bright blue hair. I stepped back and my jaw dropped in surprise. I knew I had seen her before. “Felicia?” I gasped. Now it was her turn to be shocked. Her ears perked up and she stared at me in amazement. “You... you know my name?” she asked softly. It was really her! “You fought in the Night Warriors tournament at least ten years ago.” I continued to look her over and in a dreamy haze unconsciously uttered, “You haven’t aged a day.” She blushed a little and looked away. “It’s a real honor to meet such a famous..... character. Double meaning intended.” I extended my hand. She gave me a weak half smile. “You’re an odd boy to compliment a monster.” I raised an eyebrow in confusion. But then she smiled at me cheerfully and shook my hand. “But it’s nice to have a fan.” Woof! Her hands, or I guess in this case “paws”, were almost twice the size of mine!

As we continued this ritual of acquaintanceship, I felt a slight tug on the blanket around my shoulders. “Anon, sumimasen?” I looked to my side and saw two sky-blue eyes shining inside a small brown coat. “Domo arigato, Artukei-san,” she bowed. “Thank you for saving Felicia.” Then my little companion finally removed her hood to reveal two little white cat ears, a fluffy mane of bright red hair, and a smile that was the epitome of cute. “Hajimemashite! Kanasuki desu! Yoroshiku!” she bowed again. Kanasuki, eh? I returned her greeting and bowed. “Kochirakoso yoroshiku, Kanasuki-chan.” She was the most adorable thing I’d ever seen. Right after Kida-chan of course.

“Well, aren’t you a man of the world,” said a voice from above. I looked up and saw a third nekomimi sitting on a hanging info board. She leapt down and.... leapt is no good. She floated down and landed right between me and Felicia with such grace and agility that I couldn’t help but whisper a ‘wow’. She had golden blonde hair, slightly darker fur on her body, and an incredible figure! Ai megami, she could’ve been a model! “So you’re the boy scout,” she said as she looked at me with enticing green eyes. My face warped into an overall look of ‘huh’. She moved in closer. “Hearing Felicia talk about you I thought you were just some kid. I’m glad I was wrong.” She looked me up and down as if I were Brad-frikkin-Pitt. By this point she was about an inch away from my face. Again my awkward nature took over and I took a step back. “It’s, uh, nice to meet you too... Miss... um...” She pressed her fuzzy finger to my nose and sensually whispered, “You can call me Tiger Lilly, big boy.” Felicia rolled her eyes and yanked her counterpart’s tail. “Knock it off, Summer.” The blonde beauty let out a small high pitched “mew” and looked back. Then she completely broke character and started whining like a eight year old. “What? I’m just having a little fun.” Felicia looked at her sternly. “I think you’ve had enough fun for today. Shouldn’t you apologize first?” Summer’s ears folded and looked back at me while nervously twirling her hair. “I’m... I’m sorry that I jumped on you and put you in a bag,” she said. It was her. She was the one who jumped me. It also meant that she was the one who carried me. She could’ve been as strong as me, although she certainly didn’t look it. I furrowed my brow and gruffly replied, “I thought I recognized that voice.” She smiled sheepishly and immediately started defending herself as if I were her executioner. “I just got a little carried away, that’s all. I didn’t mean to knock you out, though. That was a complete accident! I swear!” I shook my head and reassured her, “It’s OK. I got a hard head.” Besides, I can never stay mad a cat-girl. Her ears perked up and she smiled in relief that she hadn’t made an enemy.

Felicia spoke up, “Well, I was going to introduce them to you myself, but it seems most of my friends don’t need any coaxing.”
“Most?” I asked. At that moment, Kanasuki’s ears went up and she surveyed the shadows. Then she ran on all fours and quickly and silently disappeared into the dark. Amazing. These girls all moved so incredibly stealthily. That’s why I couldn’t hear Kanasuki’s footsteps earlier. And when Summer jumped down she barely made a sound. I could hear Kanasuki’s voice coming from the shadows. “Enryo shinaide,” which means “don’t be shy.” She was talking to someone. “Don’t be rude. We have a guest.” She came out pulling behind her one more girl. She was tall and very slender and she had long jet black hair that was draped over parts of her face. She almost looked like she belonged in a goth metal group or something. Kanasuki led her over towards the firing barrel, but she kept her distance from me and the others. She shyly crossed her arms and kept looking down at the floor. Felicia came up and put her hand on her shoulder as if comforting her. “Artukei,” she said softly, “this is Giselle.” She turned to her friend and spoke very calmingly, “Giselle, this is the man who helped me.” She looked through the strands of hair and glanced at me for a second. I gave her a warm and friendly smile and a soft, “Hello miss.” But she sneered at me, looked back down, and sourly muttered, “Bonsoir, monsieur.” Ah, she’s French. Maybe that’s why she’s so rude.

“Well, it’s been a pleasure to meet all of you,” I said. “I’m glad I could be of assistance. I guess um....” I had just been introduced to four beautiful nekomimis. Now what? “I guess I should go home now.” It was pretty late; almost 1:00. I removed the blanket and returned it to Kanasuki. “Arigato, Kanasuki-chan,” I bowed. But she looked up at me with her ears folded. “Do you have to?” she mewed. I looked back at the other girls and then at the subway tunnel I had entered from as I considered her question. Before I could nod, she piped up, “Can’t you just sleep here?” It was hard to say ‘no’ to that face, but I had to. If Aisha woke up in the morning all by her onesies, she’d get suspicious. Then again, I could’ve spent the night there and have gotten back home before she woke up. No. My mind was made up. I opened my mouth, but Felicia’s words stopped mine. “I think that’s an excellent idea,” she said. “Why don’t you stay here? It’s already late and seeing as how one of us did incapacitate you...” She glanced over at Summer. “I said it was an accident!” she yelled. Felicia continued, “After all, you helped me. I think it’s only fair that we return the favor.” It was as if the heavens opened up to me. I was in Shangra-kitty-la. Blinded by divine light, I forgot all about my worldly ties and said, “How can I turn down the request of a lady?”

part 4

Voices in the Dark

It must’ve been the dramatic change in temperature that woke me up, because when I came to for the second time I was freezing. I opened my eyes, but it didn’t make any difference. Everything was pitch black. I was free of the sack though, so I sharpened my senses as I tried to decipher my surroundings. My eyes jumped around seeking any single point of light. My hands felt the stone cold wall I was leaning against and my ass rested on a hard concrete floor. My ears could pick up nothing but my own breathing. I had no idea where I was, I couldn’t see, and everything was deathly quiet. On my own personal meter, I was three notches away from panic.

I was about to call out ‘help’, when a small voice came from my right. “Yokata. You’re awake.” My whole body jerked in surprise and I let out a startled scream. The voice came closer. “Gomenasai! I didn’t mean to scare you. Don’t worry. I’m not going to hurt you.” It was the same child-like voice I had heard before. “O-genki desu ka? How do you feel?” she asked. I pulled myself together and calmed down a bit. “.... s.. Samui kimochi. Cold,” I whispered. “Hai. Choto mate, kudasai. Wait here.” I waited to hear footsteps or hopefully the sound of a door. But there was silence; not even any footsteps. I called aloud. “Hello?..... Hello!?” My voice echoed in the darkness. It was as if the girl had vanished. Then I had a disturbing thought. Was she ever there to begin with? Did that bump on the head make me blind and was I delirious from hypothermia? Was I loosing it........ if I ever had it? Oh man, I was freaking out now. “HELLO!” I yelled. “Calm down. I’m right here.” Now she was right next to me! I could’ve sworn there was nobody there! “Here, take this.” I reached my hand into nothingness and felt something soft and fuzzy. I grabbed it. It was a blanket. Maybe I wasn’t going crazy. Well, anymore than I already was. I quickly draped the blanket around my shivering body. Whoever my captor was, they sure were friendly. “Dai jobu desu ka? Honka wa? Are you OK? Do you want anything else?” But I was through playing ‘wounded soldier.’ I wanted to get to the bottom of this. “I can’t see. What’s going on? Where am I?” The girl spoke to me in a calming voice. “Don’t worry. You’ll be OK. Your eyes just haven’t adjusted yet. Now, come with me.”

I felt a hand grab my arm and help me up. Gently pulling me along, she lead me around a nearby corner. As soon as we rounded the bend, I started seeing a faint point of light. I couldn’t tell what it was just yet. The light was very dim and I had left my glasses at home. I glanced down at my guide. I was just faintly starting to make out her features. She was about 5 foot 2, wearing a dark robe, and white gloves. Her head and face were covered by the robe’s hood. Suddenly I got a real creepy feeling. Had I been kidnapped by some cult and was now to be a virgin sacrifice or something? Er.. I mean.. um.... oh, who am I kidding? “Well, if this is some kind of trap,” I thought, “I’m not going to go down easy.” As we slowly walked towards the dim light, I was ready for anything.

As we got closer, I could see that the light was actually a firing barrel, like the kind you’d see bums crowded around in a back alley. The fire wasn’t strong enough for me to fully make out where I was yet. It only illuminated a small portion of the room. I felt like I was in some kind of vampire movie. We stopped about five feet away from the barrel. My guide let go of me and stepped to the side. I firmly planted my feet and curled my hands into fists as I looked into the surrounding shadows. “Here we go,” I thought. A new voice came from the other side of the barrel. “Artukei?” Wouldn’t you know it; a woman. “Is your name Artukei?” I glared into the darkness. “Depends on who’s asking,” I said. “No need to be defensive,” she said. “I only want to talk.”
“Yeah, that’s what they all say. Then why all the dramatics? Can’t you talk to me face to face? Or are you just some sniveling worm who hides in the shadows?” I heard a growl from another part of the room. The head voice chuckled. “Very well. I must warn you though. My appearance may..... shock you.” I scoffed internally. “I’ve seen a lot of things. If she can shock me, she deserves to.” As the figure started to inch its way towards the fire, my imagination went wild as I pondered what could be so shocking. Was she horribly disfigured? Was she a terrifying alien? Was she really a man? I started to see a vague but feminine outline. The first thing to come into the light was her foot. The light continued to creep up her body as she came closer. So far I saw
nothing shocking. She was wearing white stockings, long white gloves that came up to her elbows, a white thong, and a very peculiar top that only seemed to cover the front and sides of her breasts. She stood almost 6 feet tall, had long dark hair, and wore a white headband. “So she dresses a little provocatively. Big deal.” Yet I had the strangest feeling that I’d seen her before. What did this decadent femme fatale want with me? Why did she seem so familiar? And how could I be this damn lucky?!

Strays
part 3

Lost

The animal shelter called a few days later. They wanted me to come down so they could explain the details. I arrived not quite knowing what kind of news to expect. I walked up to the front desk. “Excuse me,” I said. “I’m here about the white cat that was turned in the other day.” The same doctor as before was behind the counter waiting for me with the cat in his arms. “Just as I thought, it was nothing serious. Just a piece of glass stuck in her paw.” The white beauty jumped from his arms, onto the counter, and started nuzzling my arm. The doctor continued. “Otherwise she’s perfectly fine. Uncommonly healthy for a stray.” I scratched the cat’s ears. “Well, maybe she belongs to somebody,” I said. “We thought of that,” the doctor replied. “We looked at all the missing pet reports made within the last six months. No-one’s reported the loss of a white cat.”
“So, what happens now?”
“Well, the next step would be to put her up for adoption. And since you were the one who brought her in....”
“Hmm.”

I drove home with the newest member of our family in my passenger seat. She sat up as she watched the scenery pass by. “Aisha’s gonna flip. And Kida’s gonna love you.” I thought. “What shall we call you?” I said. “Snowball? No, way too redundant. Queen? Princess? Artimus?” I laughed at the bad Sailor Moon reference I had just made. “Maybe Aisha has some good Ctarl names for you.” The cat seemed too pre-occupied with the outside to pay any attention to me this time. As I pulled into the driveway and got out, I was bubbling with excitement just thinking about Aisha and Kida’s reactions. I opened the passenger door to welcome our new resident. But the door wasn’t even six inches open before she jumped out and ran off into the woods! “Wha... HEY! Come back!” I yelled. But it was too late. With lightning speed, the feline rouge had made her escape. Suddenly I thought, “Did this cat just play me for a patsy? Was I being played this entire time?” No way. No cat could be that smart. “Maybe she does have a family. Yeah, the doctor said she was way too healthy for a stray. I’m sure she knows the way home.” Even though I thought this, it still wasn’t enough to soothe the wound of knowing that I wasted my money on the adoption papers.

That night I went to bed still gravely disappointed about my day. I didn’t tell anybody about what happened. When Aisha asked about my visit, I told her that the cat already had a home. Which I was pretty sure was the truth. How else could a stray have a clean bill of health? This was the most convincing argument in my mind. But I still didn’t feel thoroughly convinced. I tried to get to sleep but these thoughts kept whirling in my head. I got up and decided to walk off the tension. Maybe the night air would clear my head. I put on some sweat pants and my cord jacket and stepped outside. I started walking down the sidewalk as I looked up at the sky. All I could hear was the clopping of my feet and all I could see were the stars. My mind wandered as I tried to take my mind off the... “Meow!”
“Kitty?” I unconsciously uttered. I looked around for a small white figure but saw nothing but blacks and blues. The call persisted. “Meow! Meow!” It was coming from the woods; the same exact spot where the cat disappeared. I slowly walked towards the noises, almost as if it were luring me like a siren’s song. I brushed branches and snapped twigs as I followed the cry deeper into the forest. Soon I came to a small clearing. The meowing was loudest here. It had been continuous from the start. But as soon as I stepped into the clearing, it stopped. My eyes darted all over, seeking movement. “Kitty!” I called. Nothing but silence. I seemed all alone in the black. Suddenly, I heard a rustle in the trees above me. I looked up and saw a shadow descend upon me and engulf me. “Huh!? What the...!?” As I fought to escape the shroud, I felt hands from behind me push me to the ground. There was no room for me to get my arms up and brace myself, and I smacked my head something fierce as I crashed into the dirt.

I don’t know how long I was out, but when I came to I could definitely tell that I was moving. I could feel something binding my legs and there was pressure against my abdomen. I could also feel that I was bobbing slightly. And though disoriented and blinded by burlap, from as best as I could figure, I was facing the ground. Somebody was carrying me, over their shoulder no less. And I’m a pretty heavy guy. “Who ever this guy is, he must be pretty strong. Er? This is hardly the time to be impressed, boy. You gotta get outta here.” I was about to start struggling, when I heard a small voice in front of me, behind my porter. It sounded like a little girl. “I really wish you hadn’t done this. We were only supposed to lead him.” My carrier responded, “I know. But it’s more fun this way.” Is that....? That sounds like a woman! A third voice piped up; again, female. “I actually prefer to see them this way.” She had an accent that I couldn’t place at the time. “Hey, that’s not very nice!” the smaller voice said. The third voice let out a groan. “Let’s just get this over with. What does she want with him anyway?” She? This is getting interesting. “She didn’t say. She only told us to come and get the man who lived there,” my little advocate replied. The one carrying me said, “Did she say anything about him being alive?” I’d like to see you try it, sister! The small one once again spoke on my behalf. “You wouldn’t dare!” I rocked up and down as my porter laughed. “Chill out. I’m only kidding. This is just way too much fun!” An all female and rather eccentric trio of assassins. How lucky was I? But the more important question was ‘why me?’ I wanted to stay awake longer and listen to their conversation, but all this pressure on my head was unbearable. My injury was throbbing from the crash and all the blood rushing to my head didn’t help it at all. I finally gave in to submission and blacked out again.

Strays
part 2

Karma

“I’m sorry, sir. We don’t open for a few more days.”
“But I know the owner, Jinnai Makoto. Just get her. She’ll vouch for me.” The girl went to the back as I stood outside the door. I glanced behind my shoulder and saw the maples lining 25th street all starting to bud beautiful bright green leaves. I looked back in the window and saw Makoto peek her head out of the kitchen. Her face instantly lit up and she started weaving through tables as she ran towards the front and opened the door. “Justin-kun! Konnichiwa!” she said excitedly as she bowed slightly and shook my hand. I knew it was typical in Japanese culture, but this little gesture wasn’t going to cut it on U.S. soil and between two good friends. “Oh, heck with that!” I yelled, and I bent down and gave her a huge bear hug. She squeaked in surprise like a little school girl at first, but then laughed lightly and patted my back. “Come in. Please come in.” She ushered me inside and called to the girl standing at the back. “Chiyo-san! O-cha, kudasai! Hayaku!” The girl immediatly dashed into the kitchen. I hadn’t heard Makoto bark orders like that in almost three years. But this time I wasn’t on the recieving end. “This place sure looks different than when I left it,” I said as I observed the new interior. At the front there was a small reception desk and a couple benches for a waiting area. The dining area screamed Japanese. The tables were very low and instead of chairs there were cushions for the guests to sit on. On the walls were breath-taking murals of the mountains and country-side of rural Japan. “What do you think,” Makoto asked. “It’s beautiful,” I said. “It’s like I’m back in Tokyo.”

Makoto and I sat down at one of the superbly crafted hardwood tables. I crossed my legs indian style at first, but then a look of ‘oops’ flashed in my eyes and I started to change my position. Makoto chuckled and said, “It’s OK. I’ll let it go this time.” I relaxed and went back to crossing my legs, which was more comfortable for me anyway. Makoto always used to bust on me hard back in the day for not sitting properly. The girl from before came up holding a tray with a teapot and three cups. She set it on the table, sat down between us, and poured some tea into my cup. “There you are, sir.” I lightly bowed. “Arigato, gozaimasu.” Then she filled Makoto’s and finally her own. “Ah, gomenasai,” Makoto uttered. “Justin-kun, this is Hashiro Chiyo, my assistant manager. Chiyo-san, this is my best friend, Justin.” Best friend? Wow! I had no idea Makoto regarded me so highly. I extended my hand, which, again, I knew wasn’t Japanese custom, but it was like a reflex to me. “Hajimemashite, Chiyo-san. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” She shook my hand. “The pleasure’s all mine,” she said. She looked like your typical young Japanese girl. She had long black hair, brown eyes, and a rather plain yet very pretty face. “So you’re Justin. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“Really? Good or bad?” I asked. “Wait, coming from Makoto, probably bad..... and they’re probably lies.” She and Makoto laughed. “Actually, good,” Chiyo said. “Did you really buy this place for her as a Christmas present?” Ah. The urban legends had taken root. “That’s right. I did,” I proudly admitted. “Wow!” she said, “that’s incredible! My boyfriend only got me sweater and a CD.” We all burst out laughing. “So, what are you doing in my neck of the woods, Justin-kun?” Makoto asked. “Oh, I just came by to see how the place is looking,” I said. “And I was just coming back from picking up Aisha’s engagement ring.” Intrigue swept across the girls’ faces. “Ooh, let us see,” Makoto begged. I pulled the ring box out of my pocket and opened it up. Inside, surrounded by red velvet, was a golden ring studded with three 14 karat diamonds. The two gazed almost greedily at the precious treasure. “Sugoi,” Makoto gasped. “Suteki desu ne?” I asked. Makoto answered almost lost in the ring’s allure. “Hai. Dai suteki. Oh, Justin-kun, she’ll love it!”

After we had visited for a little while, I said my good-byes and was on my way. As I started walking back to my car, I heard a small noise from the alley behind me. I looked around and noticed a white cat peeking its head around the corner. “Hey there, sweetie. What’re you doing down here?” I said. It slowly started to approach me, limping a little and meowing loudly. “Here. You hungry?” I asked. Makoto had given me a small sushi platter that she insisted I take home. I took out a piece of snapper, crouched down, and held it out. The cat looked at me curiously with its emerald eyes and cautiously sniffed my leftovers. It gave it a few licks and then wolfed it down, almost biting my finger. “Wow. You must be famished, huh?” I pulled out another piece and set it on the ground. As the cat ate I slowly brought my hand down and gently started to pet the creature. Already I could hear it purring. Its coat was soft and felt very clean. A little unusual for a stray. I looked to see if there was a collar. Nope, nothing. But I noticed that its back right paw was stained with blood. “Aww. Poor thing,” I thought. Just then I remembered that the animal shelter was on my way back from there. I decided I would be a good citizen and take the cat in. But as my hands reached around the cat’s sides, it jumped back and hissed at me. I got down low and spoke very calmly to it as if I were talking to Kida. “Calm down. It’s OK. I just wanna help you.” The cat flicked its ears as if it were trying to translate my words. “That looks like it hurts. I know some people who can fix it. Trust me. I just want to help.” I offered my hand, showing that I didn’t mean any harm. “It’ll be OK, I promise.” The cat slowly approached me again and started rubbing its head against my fingers. “So, you trust me?” I asked. It looked up at me and gave a soft “meow.” I’m not sure, but I think I saw it nod as well.

The cat had consumed the last of the sushi as we arrived at the animal shelter. I reached in the back and grabbed a towel that I keep there for emergencies and swaddled the cat as I lifted it out. As I walked to the door, something must’ve spooked it because it started to try and wrestle its way out. I scratched its ears to calm it down, then I lifted it up and reassured it, “Don’t worry. Everything’s gonna be fine.” I entered and walked up to a lady behind the front desk. “Excuse me,” I said, “I found this stray near 1st street. It has a wounded foot.” A nearby doctor came around to have a look. “Let me see,” the doctor said. I let down a corner of the towel to show the injury. The doctor carefully examined the blood stained paw. “What’s your name?” he asked as he started writing on his clipboard. “Artukei,” I said, “A-R-T-U-K-E-I.”
“Address?”
“145 Kennedy St SW.”
“Phone?”
“555-2613.” The doctor gently lifted the cat from my arms. “We’ll take her to the back and give her a full examination,” he said. The cat tried desperately to get free. Once again, I did my best to pacify it. “Don’t worry,” I said. “Everything’s gonna be OK. I promise you. These people are going to take good care of you. You trust me, remember?” Almost as if it understood me, it calmed down and looked at me with its big green eyes. “You seem to have a real gift there,” the doctor said. “Eh, I have a daughter,” I shrugged. The doctor gave me a confused look. “Don’t let my boyish looks fool you,” I said. “Well, the injury doesn’t look like anything serious,” he said. “She should be back on her feet in a day or two.” As the doctor walked towards the back, the cat never took its eyes off of me. “OK, that’s kinda eerie.”

With the pride of knowing that I had done the right thing, I returned home. I stepped through the door and I hadn’t gone further than “I’m ho...” before Kida had fastened herself to my leg. “Hello sweetie,” I said as I patted her head. “Hello daddy,” said the figure coming down the stairs. I looked up. “Washu! Class out for the day?” I asked. Washu is Kida’s private tutor. She comes over three times a week a gives Kida brief lessons in science and math, of course. Aisha was right behind her. “Come here, Kida-chan,” Washu said. “I still have to give you your assignment.” Kida let go of me and rushed over to her teacher. I pulled Aisha aside. “How’d it go today?” I asked. “Great,” she said. “Today’s lesson was on animal classification.”
“Oh. How is she?”
“Excellent. She’s smart as a whip. You should’ve been here, Justin. You would’ve been so proud.”
“I already am,” I said as I beamed with joy over my daughter. Washu was just finishing. “Remember to be a good girl and study hard.” Kida bowed slightly. “Yes, Professor Washu.” Then Washu patted her student’s head and opened a portal back to her lab. “Take care everyone!” she said. “You too!” I called back. “Say ‘hi’ to DJ for us!” Aisha said. “I will!” And with that, she vanished.

Kida looked up at me. “Daddy, can I play video-games now?”
“Only if I can play too,” I said. “But only for an hour. Then you hit the books.” She ran into the living room. Gumdrop poked his head out from the top of the stairs and sniffed the air for a sec. “I smell immanent digital bliss!” he said. Then he scampered down the stairs and into the living room yelling, “I call dibs on Bowser!” After the peanut gallery had left, Aisha gently grabbed my arm. “Did you get it?” she asked as she lightly hopped up and down like a six year old. I reached in my pocket. “‘Did I get it,’ she asks,” I joked as I pulled the ring box out. Greedily, she snatched it from my grasp and quickly opened it. She gasped and her eyes shined. “It’s the one I wanted. Oh, Justin, it’s perfect!” She immediately put it on. “I would’ve gotten here sooner,” I said, “but I wanted to stop by Makoto’s. Also, the weirdest thing happened.” Aisha’s ears twitched. “Nya? What?”
“It’s strange,” I said. “On the way home I found this stray. It had an injured paw so I took it to the animal shelter.”
“A stray? Cat? Dog? Pokémon?”
“Oh, it was a cat.” As soon as I said this, Aisha went all chibi-eyed on me and she sounded like Kida. “Aww. I little kitty?” She gave me a big hug and started purring. “Purr. My big hero.”
“I wonder if she would’ve reacted differently if I said it was a dog.” I thought. But then Aisha became a little confused. “Wait. What’s so weird about that?”
“Well, the cat acted very strange,” I said. “Whenever I spoke to it, it.... it looked at me as if it could understand me. As if it were human or something.”
“Hmm. Well, what’s going to happen to it now?”
“The doctor said they’d take care of it and give it a full examination.”
“What’ll they do after it’s well?”
“Eh.... if it’s healthy enough they’ll probably put it up for adoption. It didn’t have a collar, but.... most likely it already belongs to somebody.”
“Well that’s good,” she said. Then she continued nuzzling me. “Purr. You saved that little kitty’s life.” I scoffed at her sweet remark. “Pssh! It’s nothing.” Apparently,
Aisha didn’t think so. She tilted her head up and licked my cheek. I raised an eyebrow and we both exchanged looks of mischief. Slowly she moved in to kiss me. “Daddy!” Kida’s voice hollered from the other room. I let out a painful sigh and whispered, “Hold those lips.” I called out, “Alright! Coming!” as I went to vanquish evil with my little girl.

Strays
part 1

Out of the Shadows

A silver moon shone down on the city of Metrolex. Onto the skyscraping office buildings, to the condos and apartment complexes, and down into the streets it bounced. In a dismal alley on the west side of town (the fish market district to be exact), there came a rustle from a pile of newspapers. A small white figure emerged from underneath and into the moonlight. It was a cat: a beautiful white cat with green eyes and a coat that almost glittered in the dim light. It stepped out cautiously, flicking it’s ears and smelling the air to make sure no-one was there. After confirming its surroundings, it looked back and let out a loud “meow.” Three more cats came out of the shadows. One had green eyes as well and was yellow with stripes of a darker shade, almost looking like a miniature golden tiger. Another was jet black with yellow eyes and a bit more slender than the others. The last was the smallest of the four and had orange and white fur and sky blue eyes.

With the white one in front, the feline quartet navigated its way around the broken bottles, garbage bags, and other assorted trash that littered the alleyway. When they came to the entrance, they spied a truck making a late delivery. A man opened the back and called to his partner, “Hurry up, Tony! They’re not gonna stay fresh forever!” The man began to hand down one of several small crates to his friend. The other man set them on the sidewalk in front of a small shop. Back in the alley, the white cat looked at the orange one and flicked its ears in the direction of the truck. This was obviously some sort of signal because Orange immediately started running towards the man on the ground. He was about to set the next crate on the curb when he heard a small “meow” from at his feet. He looked down and saw Orange eyeing the crate and licking its lips hungrily. “No, no, kitty. Go home,” he said. But then he heard another “meow” behind him. He turned around and saw Black with the same expression. “Go home!” he shouted. At this point, Yellow had joined in and was jumping and pawing at the crate. “Damn cats. Hey Byron!” He called to his friend in the truck. Byron looked out and asked, “What’s going on?” Tony was holding the crate up to his shoulders while the three cats jumped and pawed at him. “I’m surrounded!” he yelled. Muttering under his breath, “Oh, for Pete’s sake,” Byron jumped down and went to aid his colleague while White jumped into the truck unnoticed. As the men tried to shoe the cats away, White pushed a crate towards the edge of the truck. Summoning all her strength, White pushed and pushed until the crate was teetering over the edge. Then she gave it one final nudge and leapt back behind the remaining cargo as the crate crashed onto the street. The two men looked back to see what had made the noise. They saw a small pile of splintered wood, crushed ice, and fresh mahi-mahi. “Aw, crap!” Byron yelled. The three cats rushed towards the wreckage. “No! Bad cats! Get away!” Tony screamed. But Byron held him back. “Aw, screw it. Let’em have it. We can’t sell damaged goods anyway. C’mon! Let’s get the rest unloaded before anything else happens.” As Byron jumped into the back and lifted up another crate, White silently made her getaway and rejoined her accomplices on the ground. The cats quickly gathered up their spoils and ran back into the alley. Mission accomplished.

Meanwhile, a few blocks down, a gray van patrolled the streets. A man sitting on the passenger side rubbed his arms and blew into his hands. “Tell me again why we’re down here,” he said. “We’ve been getting numerous reports of strays in this area,” said the driver. “No, I know that,” the other replied. “What I’m wondering is why we’re out here when it’s frikking freezing.”
“Stop complaining. We just need to do a quick survey and then get back to the shelter. Besides, I do have the heat on.” The man gave a confused look and checked his vents. They were still closed. Smiling sheepishly, he opened them up and put his hands against them. As he warmed himself, he glanced out his window at the alley. “Hey, I think I see something. Stop here.”

The cats sat silently enjoying their hard earned reward. For a moment, they were unaware of the two men with snares and crates slowly approaching them, until Black caught them. She arched her back and hissed at the intruders. “Don’t worry, kitty. We’re not going to hurt you,” said one of them. White, Orange, and Black slowly started to back away into the shadows. “That’s weird,” said the man. “I thought I saw four.” In a warlike screech, Yellow leaped off the top of a dumpster and lunged at the other man’s face. He screamed in shock and the thought of his face getting torn off flashed through his mind. But the golden feline simply bounded of his chest, as if trying to knock him back. Then she ran to her companions and they all disappeared into the shadows. Running at full speed, the four dodged and weaved past the trash bags and miscellaneous garbage. White lead them to the hole in the chain link fence where they had entered from. One by one she ushered them through to safety, but she stayed behind to make sure they weren’t being followed. She stalwartly guarded the opening and flicked her ears. After a minute, she decided the coast was clear and she was about to pass through the fence herself, but stopped. The fish; they had forgotten the fish. It had been so long since they had a decent meal, and those fish were too good to leave behind. In the end, her stomach and her concern for her friends won and she started running back. She made it back to the alley and spied the largest piece of fish left. She went into a full sprint straight towards the deliciously sweet meat. But, unfortunately, she was motivated too much by hunger this time and didn’t even notice the man’s snare come around her neck. Like lightning, she was jerked back and into a plastic crate. “Couldn’t resist, could you?” the man said. White meowed loudly, hoping that her family would hear. “What about the others?” his partner asked. “We’ll get them eventually. This’ll be enough for now,” he said as he laid the crate in the back of the van. As the door closed, White continued to cry out into the night. But when she heard the engine rumble and felt the van start to move, she sorrowfully lay down and closed her eyes in submission.

As they drove back, the two officers started to make small talk. “Hey, did you see last night’s episode of ‘Space Opera 7?’”
“You actually watch that crap?”
“I happen to think it’s very funny. What do you watch?”
“Oh, I don’t watch a lot of TV. Mostly I... what was that?” They had gone about five miles when the man in the passenger seat heard a strange sound. “What was what?” the driver asked. “Eh, nothing,” the other shrugged. “Probably one of the crates falling over back there. So anyway...” They were about to continue when they heard a deafening “BANG!!!” come from the back. “What the hell?!” the driver yelled. The noise persisted “BANG, BANG, BANG!!!” and every time it sounded the whole van shook violently. The other man slowly turned around. He looked into the back through a small window. All he saw was black. But then suddenly, two big green eyes moved right in front of his and a low growl resonated from the back. The man whipped back around, his face deathly pale screaming, “Pull over! Pull over!” The driver slammed on the breaks and the van screeched to a halt. “What the hell is going on?!” the driver screamed. “There’s something back there,” the other whispered. “Something big.”
“Wh... what?” the driver stammered. But before the men could think another thought, the van started to rock and up and down as if it were in an earthquake. The two held on for dear life thinking this was the end. Then there was one last colossal BANG...... and everything was still. The two men just sat there panting, their faces white. Until finally, they mustered up all their courage, opened the doors, and leapt out to see what had caused all this. They could already see that the doors were flung wide open. As they got closer, they noticed that the doors were now bent and distorted. They cautiously peeked around the warped doors and looked into the back. There was nothing there. Nothing but a busted up pet carrier that looked as if it were torn in half. “Oh my god, look at this,” the driver said as he examined the inside of the door. It was mutilated: riddled with deep claw marks and humungous impressions that resembled giant fists. “What the hell was that thing?”

Although free, the enigma that was now “Little White” was also in unfamiliar territory. She looked up at the moon with her small green eyes and let out a lonesome yowl. She was lost. Lost........ and left alone........ crying........ in the darkness.

--Washu’s Lab--

K: (sitting on a stool)
W: (behind a control panel) Hold still, Kida-chan. This won’t hurt a bit.
A laser grid forms around Kida.
A: (next to Washu) You sure this is harmless, Washu?
K: I’m fine, mommy! (waves back)
W: She’ll be just fine.
J: (somewhere in the lab) Hey, you saved it!
A: Nya?
W: Huh?
J: (comes up dragging a long chrome object that looks kind of like a formula 1 racer without wheels and a jet engine on the back) Hnnn! Urg! (sets it down) *sigh* Phew!
A: What in the galaxy is that?
W: Oh yeah! That’s an old invention Justin and I created years ago. It was his idea. He called it the Cloud Cutter.
A: Cloud Cutter?
J: It’s a jet-propelled personal air transport. It can reach speeds of up to 150 mph. That is.... it would have. (glances at Washu)
W: *sigh* I couldn’t make it go that fast. You blacked out after 100.
J: Washu made it so it could only go 90. Buzz kill. I still say we should have added that g-force stabilizer. It would’ve neutralized the effects.
W: I’m not having this conversation with you again.
J: (glares at Washu) Grrrrr. (looks at Kida) *smiles* (looks at Aisha) You know, you and her are the most precious things in my world now. (kisses her cheek)
A: (takes his arm)
J: (quietly) I love you, Aisha. And I know you love me. And I also know why you love Kida so much.
A: Nya?
J: It’s the same reason you were hesitant about getting into a deeper relationship with me. They say human sperm isn’t strong enough to fertilize a ctarl egg cell. That’s why you held back those feelings for me until recently. Feelings that only emerged during a full moon. You didn’t want our relationship to become sexual because you were afraid we wouldn’t be able to reproduce. But Kida changed all that. Am I right?
A: .... (nods) Yes.
“beep beep beep!”
W: That’s good Kida. You can come down now.
K: (hops of the stool and runs towards Aisha)
A: (picks her up)
J: How is she?
W: (looking at the screen) Just fine. She’s a perfectly healthy little girl. And if my guess is correct..... yep! Looks like we missed another birthday. According to her biological scan she’s 6 years old.
J: Six already? She’ll be ten in a matter of weeks. And if that keeps up... Aisha, could you and Kida-chan leave me and Washu alone for a minute?
A: Sure. (walks away carrying Kida)
J: Washu, about this whole growth acceleration thing. Can you..... is there any way you can stop it? I mean, at the rate she’s ageing, she’ll..... she’ll...... *clears throat* I want you to stop it!
W: I’m sorry, Justin. But I told you before, I can’t. But...
J: (enraged) Why?! Washu, at this rate, by the end of the year I’m going to be burying my own daughter!
W: Justin, calm down and listen to me!
J: .... *sniff*
W: (slowly and calmly) I can’t stop the process. But it will stop on its own very soon.
J: What?
W: I kept trying to tell you. The growth acceleration hormones will slow down and degenerate as Kida gets older. Already they’re starting to diminish.
J: ........
W: You’re not going to burry your daughter, Justin. I will make certain of that.
J: .... So,.... when will she start ageing normally?
W: (looks at the screen) If this remains constant, the accelerators will be out of her system in a month or two.
J: How old will she be by then?
W: About..... fourteen.
J: *sigh of relief*
W: You’ll have plenty of time to watch her grow into a beautiful young woman.
J: Washu,.... you have a strange way of mucking up my life and fixing it all at the same time.
W: ^_^
J: ...... (looks at the Cloud Cutter) Hey, Kida-chan!
A: (walks back in holding Kida)
J: (lays down on the Cloud Cutter as if mounting a motorcycle) You wanna go for a ride?
K: Yeah!
A: Absolutely not!
J: Washu, you should get Deej down here. I’m sure he’d get a real kick out of this.

Release the Spaz!

Gumdrop

--Kitchen--

A: Nya? (notices a small gray cat plushie on the table) *sigh* Kida forgot one of her toys again. (picks up the plushie)
Plushie: I love you very much.
A: Oh, how cute. It talks. (squeezes it)
“Squeak!”
P: You’re my best friend.
J: (walks in) Hey Aisha, what’s..... oh, that’s where he went.
A: Isn’t he cute?
“Squeak!”
P: I love you. Let’s get married.
J: (jumps back) 0_0 What the...?!
A: *laughs* Justin chill. It’s not alive.
J: Can I have a look at that?
A: (hands him the plush)
J: (squeezes it)
“Squeak!”
P: You’re my best friend.
“Squeak!”
P: Let’s have some fun.
“Squeak!”
P: Let’s party!
“Squeak!”
P: (in Bugs Bunny voice) Eh... what’s up, doc?
A: Nya?
J: Hmm...
“Squeak!”
P: Frankly Scarlet, I don’t give a...
“Squeak!”
P: *Vader breathing* Luke, I am your father.
A: ???
“Squeak!”
P: KHAAAAAN!!!
“Squeak!”
P: Momma always said, “Life is like a box of chocolates.”
“Squeak!”
P: Heeeeeeeeere’s Johnny!
“Squeak!”
P: I’ll never let go, Jack.
“Squeak!”
P: KHAAAAAN!!!
J: You already said that.
P: (looks up at Justin) Well, why don’t you try this? See how easy this is! (covers his mouth)
J: AH-HA!
A: 0_0 Nya?!
J: I was wondering if you were going to say something.
A: What is that thing?
P: Thing?! I’m Hamlet: Prince of Denmark! (in low voice) I’m Batman. (with southern accent) I’m Forrest Gump. People call me Forrest Gump. (in a gruff voice) I’m Maximus Decemus Meridus. General to the legions of Rome.
J: This is Gumdrop. My childhood friend. I’ve had him ever since I was six. He can talk. This is incredible! Back home when I was little, I always imagined he could talk. It further proves my Rifter theory!
A: Gumdrop?
J: I was six!
G: Gummy, for short. (jumps out of Justin’s hands and into Aisha’s arms) But you can call me anything you want, baby. Rrrrrow!
A: *sweatdrop* Ehh....
G: Then again, what’s in a name anyway? A nose by any other name would still smell.
J: (picks Gummy up by his tail) He’s basically your typical spaz.
G: I prefer “excessively charismatic”.
A: What’s he doing here?
J: I thought he’d make an excellent playmate for Kida-chan.
G: Oh yeah! Trot out the ladies!
J: Gummy! That’s my daughter you’re talking about!
G: Daughter? Dude, you finally scored?! (starts singing) Do a little dance. Make a little love. Get down tonight. Uhn!
J: *sweatdrop* Maybe this was a bad idea.

Later...

J: (watching TV)
G: (pops up behind the sofa) *whispers* Bagel shop. (goes back down)
J: (keeps watching)
G: (pops back up) *whispers* Bagel shop. (goes down)
J: Hmm?
G: (pops up behind Justin’s shoulder) Take me to the bagel shop. (goes down)
J: Why?
G: (pops up by Justin’s knee) You know why? Cause I need a bagel. A bagel with cream cheese. Yeah, everyone likes the cheese and the cream and the creamy cheese. Creamy creamy cheesey cheesey creamy cheese. (goes down, comes back up) Cheesey creamy. (goes down)
J: Maybe later.
G: I’m hungry. (walks to the phone, picks up the phone, dials) Greetings pizza merchant. I would like to order a large carp-waffel pizza, please..........Whadaya mean you don’t have carp or waffels? What kind of place is this?!
J: Gummy, get off the phone.
G: (on the phone) I’m gonna come over there and put refried beans in your hair! Do you understand me?!........ Hello? Hello?! (in military voice) Apparently what we have here is a failure to communicate!
J: *groan*

Even later....

G: (walking towards the front door)
A: Well, where are you going?
G: I found out that one of our neighbors has a lawn gnome. I’m gonna kidnap it and hold it for ransom.
A: (opens the door) OK. Have fun.
G: (runs outside)
A: What a cute little....
J: Ai ya. What’s he doing now?
G: He’s just gone to play outside.
J: He didn’t say anything about stealing a lawn gnome, did he?
A: Actually, he did.
J: Oh geez.
A: He’s not really gonna do it, is he?
J: The funny thing about Gumdrop. Nothing he says makes sense. And whatever he says, he means every word of it.
G: (comes running back in, yelling outside) You’ll never take me alive! (slams the door)
J: (condescendingly) Plan not work so well?
G: The plan is flawed. Intelligence failed to warn me that they own an Australian Shepherd. Now then.... where’s my monocle? I wanna look rich.

Later the night....

--Kida’s room--

K: (sleeping) Zzzzz...
G: (cracks open the door) *whispering* Area secure. I’m goin’ in. (starts sidling along the walls, crawling on the floor, and ducking behind toys all the while humming the “Mission Impossible” theme, looks up and sees Ozz asleep on the mantle above Kida’s bed, climbs up the shelf and onto the mantle, starts creeping towards Ozz, crouches down ready to pounce)
O: Zzzzz...
G: Foolish alien. I shall harness you power! Yaa! (jumps at Ozz but he bounces off his force field that he puts up when he’s asleep and falls onto Kida’s bed) Oof! If I weren’t stuffed, that probably would’ve hurt.
K: (stirs) Mmm?
G: Uh oh.
K: (opens her eyes halfway) Hmm?
G: (to himself) Don’t move. She can’t see you if I don’t move.
K: Mmm. Kitty. (grabs Gummy)
G: Gak!
K: (holds him tight as she goes back to sleep) Mmm....
G: (in Stewie voice) Blast! Release me, accursed feline!
J: (walking by outside, hears the noises) What the... (pokes his head in) Heh. Well look at this.
G: Help me Obi-wan. You’re my only hope.
J: ...... Nah, I don’t think so.
G: What?!
J: I think she likes you, pal. She’s holding you pretty tight.
G: Dude, not funny. Get me out.
J: I don’t wanna wake up my baby girl.
G: Well..... cut me in half and sew me back together later! Just get me outta here!
J: I don’t know. This could be a good thing for you. Later. (starts to leave)
G: Wha.... hey!
J: Goodnight, you two.
G: After the lawn gnome, you’re next!
J: *laughs* (closes the door)
G: *sigh* (looks at Kida) ....... Well.... she is kinda cute.

Second Base At Last

“Good night, my little kitten.” I kissed Kida on the cheek and tucked her into bed. Makoto’s old room, the guest room, was now hers and was littered with toys and books that Washu had brought over. Although young, Kida showed a wonderful interest in science and technology. Washu’s influence, no doubt. As I closed the door, I saw Aisha out of the corner of my eye. “I thought that was my title,” she said with a sly smile. “No,” I softly said as I slowly approached her. “She’s my little kitten. You’re my feline angel, my beautiful flower, and now.... my fiancé.” I gently grabbed her shoulders and kissed her. Her hands wandered up towards my face as her tongue darted in and out of my mouth. My right hand crept to the back of her neck while my left slid down to her side. Aisha broke away. “Come on.” She grabbed my hand and pulled me behind her.

She dragged me to our room and had us both sit down on the bed. Then she resumed eating me. Our bodies pressed together as we kissed deeper and deeper. I ran my fingers through her hair and she did the same to me. Then I scratched behind her ears and she started to purr. “Oh, this is nice,” I thought. “This is so nice!” I was so caught up in this pleasure that I didn’t notice my hand unconsciously making its way towards her breast. Then, without thinking, I groped her. She let out a startled “nya” and I instantly snapped back to anime. As if I had touched a stove’s burner, my hand recoiled and I let out an avalanche of apologies. “I’m sorry! I’m so sorry! Gomenasai! Gomenasai!” I turned away and looked down at the floor. But I felt Aisha’s hand gently grasp mine and she spoke to me in a soft voice. “Justin.... it’s OK.” I looked back at her, my face bright red and full of shame. She chuckled lightly. “Even now that we’re engaged, you’re still embarrassed about touching me?” I grabbed the back of my neck and protested. “It’s just.... kind of how I am. Call it upbringing, call it morals. My way of being.... nice, it’s just my way of showing that I respect you. That I love you. I just didn’t want you to think I was a creep or something.” Aisha shook her head. “Justin, I knew for a long time that you weren’t a creep. However, I was laboring under the suspicion that you were gay.”
“What?!” She let out a laugh and then looked at me with a glint of mischief in her eye. “But that’s all sweet first date stuff. You are long overdue for an upgrade.” She started bringing my hand towards her chest. My eyes widened at her actions, and before I could think, she was pressing my hand against her breast. By now, my face was glowing crimson. I swallowed hard and warily squeezed her breast. Aisha let out a stifled moan, and then she asked me, “How long have you wanted to do that?” Well that was pretty straight forward! I looked up at her in shock. If my face could’ve gotten any more red, it would have liquefied into blood. I took a deep breath, looked into her eyes, and answered, “..... Long.”
“‘Since you first met me’ long?” she asked. I nodded in all honesty. She gave me a sly smile and started to lick my cheek while my hand continued to massage her soft bosom. Then she slid her hand down to my leg and groped my inner thigh. “Whoa!” I retorted in surprise and brushed her hand away. “Not yet,” I said. “Soon, but not yet. On the night of our honeymoon I will make the wait well worth it.”
