FMA musings...
I've been musing over a lot of things FMA recently (well, haven't a lot of us been?), and I'm going over some of the more recent episodes... but that's all blah, yes, I'm so confused over it all...
... but I think I've pinned down one minor point here. I think that it's intended to take place in Germany.
Logic? Very little, but here it goes...
First of all, Beck pointed out to me early on that "Alphonse" is very much a German name. I checked a few name resources just to be sure of its origin, and it is indeed German.
Next bit of evidence, though it's rather inconclusive... the note that Edward sends Colonel Mustang in episode 26, part of which reads "This section, by featuring a number of objects of special [interest?] from the contemporary collections of the Science Museum, shows how broad and multifaceted a contribution modern Britain is making to science and technology." The mention of Britain, though it doesn't point directly to Germany, does suggest that the setting is likely in Europe.
Third. The apparent head of command of the State Alchemists is referred to as "Führer", which literally means "leader" in German (in contemporary English, the word is usually used to refer to a tyrannical or ruthless leader - whether or not this has any bearing on the situation is up for debate). (Let it also be noted that I'm not sure if the word Führer is the literal translation of the dialogue, or just the translator's choice of words.)
Fourth, Winry mentions an auto-mail smith by the name of "Gotz" in the 26th episode when they visit Rush Valley. Is that a German-sounding name?
Fifth. When Ed, Al, and Winry are on the train to Rush Valley (episode 25), Ed mentions an Ishbal camp in the "mountains in the south." The Bavarian Alps, perhaps? These mountains are also mentioned by Scar's master later in the same episode.
Sixth, Rush Valley. Could this be an allusion to the Rhine Valley? That probably doesn't have much relevance, it's just a thought of mine while looking over maps.
That's all I have from my musings tonight... aaaand, I gotta go and study more for the SAT on Saturday. Please, please dig through my logic and pick out my mistakes! ^.~
