Yeah most American cartoons are humorous, but some of them have adult situations along with the humor. Though there usually isn't a serious mood to it. My experience with anime is that there's more of a variety in genres than with American cartoons. And it also seems like the definition for 'cartoon' is changing to make it mean specifically 'American animated show'. In that case, and if that's how you're using it, then it would be different from anime. ^_^
