The Departed is really cool. I had such a great time watching it yesterday. It's the type of movie that's especially fun to watch in theaters because it gets such a reaction from the audience; I've never heard so many collective gasps or oh nos in a theater before.
To those of you who have seen the trailer, it does a good job of showcasing the serious aspects of the movie, but the two things it fails to prepare you for is the 'inventive' use of profanity (Jack Nicholson is the biggest potty mouth in this) and the humor. Surprisingly the movie is really funny, though some of it is very dark. Like there's this one scene early on when Nicholson's character shoots some helpless lady in the back of the head, then laughs because "she fell funny."
It's definitely the most entertaining action movie I've seen in a long time, and I highly recommend it to anyone who can stand profanity and watching graphic violence. And I don't mean Kill Bill-style fountains of blood type violence; I mean repeatedly beating someone's broken wrist with the heel of a boot type violence. Still ridiculous, yeah, but just realistic enough to make you cringe.
