Yeah, I've never really understood that, myself. Somebody says to be quiet, or shut up, and the other person loudly refuses...
...and then silence reigns. The person who said "Be quiet" or "shut up" gets their wish. I'm sure there's some obscure psychological reason for the lack of a better retort.
I'll figure it out....eventually.
