Lord of the Flies

In the book Lord of the Flies written by William Golding there are many symbols representing things. They may represent goodness and evil, or maybe savagery vs. civilization or just one of them. There are many things that are symbolized through these objects used as the symbols. Examples could be how Simon represents pure natural goodness, or how Piggy’s glasses can represent intelligence. Or how the fire represents their hope to be rescued and go home eventually. These are just some of the examples the book has to represent things.

One thing that is a symbol is the conch shell. In the beginning of the book the conch shell represents the power mainly. It represents power in how it’s used to assemble meetings with the boys. Also, whoever is speaking has to hold the conch at those meetings and no one else is supposed to. Through out the book the conch’s power slowly wears off. As the boys become more savage like and wild, they tend to not pay attention to it. Also when Jack forms his own sort of tribe thing, they don’t see the conch as a sign of power and organization but as nothing more than a shell basically. “Him with the shell.” “Ralph! Ralph!” “Let him be the chief with the trumpet-thing.”(15) That shows that they wanted the person with the conch that symboled power, to be in power. That’s what the conch symbolizes in this book.

The next symbol I shall tell you about from the book is the fire. The fire symbolizes the hope hey have for wanting to be rescued so they can go back hope and not be trapped on the island anymore. As the story progresses they seem to not tend to the fire anymore, this can be how to them the importance of getting home has lost their interests. They are getting used to the island and don’t really care about getting rescued anymore. In the ending of the book they try to smoke Ralph out of the woods to like kill him. Instead they end up running him out of the woods and tumbling onto the beach into a Naval officer and they get rescued. That fire they got rescued by wasn’t even meant to save them but it sure did help Ralph out plenty. “We saw your smoke. What have you been doing? Having a war or something?”(181) That symbolizes the fire causing them to get rescued.

The last symbol I’ll explain is Piggy’s glasses. His glasses represent intelligence and the ability to start a fire also. The glasses get used to start the fires. At first the fires are for the smoke signal to get rescued. Then when Jack and his tribe break off from Ralph they steal them and use them to make fire to cook the meat over. Then at the end they use the glasses to create a fire to smoke out Ralph from the woods and they end up getting rescued because of the surplus of smoke that the Naval officers noticed. “His specs–use them as burning glasses!”(32) That was when they first realized that they could create a fire using Piggy’s glasses.

Those are some examples of how things are symbols in the book Lord of the Flies. The conch shell represented power and organization. The fire represents to hope for them wanting to get rescued and get home. And Piggy’s glasses and them being able to start a fire and intelligence because it takes smarts to know that you could have done that. There are plenty other symbols in the book such as some of the characters and other objects as well. It’s a book full of them.
