   Smooth Jazz at Cocktail Hour
The rain falls down during a busy night
Car lights streak by passing each other
The lampposts seem dull and dim
In the dreary, damp evening
On the corner is a club
All sorts come there to drown their sorrows
Musicians play their melodies
Hoping to reach those melancholy individuals
That believe in nothing but suicide
In a dark alley somewhere
A homeless bluesman wails on his horn
A prayer to passersby
Misery loves company
Yet when they see his plight
And hear his sad story
They realize they aren’t so depressed
Music and Mardi Gras nights stopped
The songs still continue
Despite all the sorrow
Emotions are mixed
Different as the people who have them
Yet the music lives on
In spite of tears, distress and death
The jazz musician still writes and plays
It’s his universal language
One we can all interpret
Although sometimes matters get worse
They get better in time
Against all the odds and pessimism
The musician in all of us is unafraid
Keeping the song alive
Knowing a happier time will arrive
Beyond what many know as “Happy Hour”
Keep playin’ your song, cats
Don’t give up your jive
For so long as you got music in your soul
The song will keep you alive.
