Movin' With the Rhythm

Wednesday, May 14th
I’m starting to settle into the rhythm of things over here. This is a good thing. I haven’t made any more mistakes in my work, my jet lag has completely subsided (I managed to sleep through the whole night last night), and I’m actually having conversations without that nasty awkward feeling that comes with talking to people I don’t know very well. I’m really starting to enjoy myself and it is quite a relief, let me tell you. Before leaving I was a bit concerned that I might come to hate it here. That maybe the culture would be a turn-off or maybe I would be too far out of my comfort zone to be able to function. Thankfully neither of those are the case. From what I’ve learned of the culture so far, I like it! As the Japanese say, “suki dayo!” Imagine that, the American otaku likes Japanese culture. HAHA! Yeah… there was never anything to be worried about, but if you haven’t noticed already, I worry more than I should. So, in my new level of comfort, I’ve decided to break out the little Japanese that I actually know and start using it in conversation. My first few attempts at this, with words like “arigato (thank you)” and “hai (yes),” have been met with chuckling. They seem to find my attempts amusing, but apparently enjoy the fact that I’m trying it. They correct my pronunciation, smile, and congratulate me. Heh heh! It’s a bit awkward, but I’m going to continue. I’m hoping that eventually they’ll start teaching me a little more of the language.

My work today was a little more thought inducing than the work of the previous couple days. My task was to erase little title banners from the Japanese manga pages and replace them with new ones of a more sophisticated nature. They’re currently working on producing an English version of their new manga of the book of Acts called Manga Metamorphosis. I’m not much a fan of the title, but I do look forward to reading it. I finished that work sooner than they expected I would and had nothing else for me to do for the last two hours of the day. So, I was sent next door to help put together this month’s newsletter packets. This process seems to me like a Japanese business equivalent of a sewing circle. There were six people in the room talking, laughing, and carrying on like a drunk man in a karaoke bar. It was hilarious! I couldn’t help but smile. They noticed my smile and figured it best I know what they were talking about, so the man next to me, Hiroyuki-san, explained the general subject matter of their conversation. It had to do with one of the women’s attempts at finding a husband. But I didn’t care much, it was just entertaining to listen to them. Ignorance of the subject matter made it funnier. ^_^

I ran out of food last night. So, after work I walked down the street to a small 7-11 type of store called Lawson. I wandered around for a few minutes before eventually deciding on instant rice and microwavable curry. I got three days worth of that, some bottles of water, a can of ice coffee, and a package of rice cakes for snacking. After some deductive reasoning and inquisition of a colleague, I figured out how to prepare the curry and rice. It tasted fine but cheap, but that’s fine because I’m a cheapskate. I’ll try and get some real Japanese curry before I leave anyway. For now, the instant stuff will satisfy my dinner requirement.
