Sailor Moon is the story of Usagi, a regular teenage girl growing up in Japan who that she is the reincarnation Queen Serenity’s daughter, and heir to the magical powers of the Moon Kingdom. Using a magical locket Usagi can transform into the sailor-suited pretty soldier Sailor Moon, who defends the Earth from Queen Beryl and the forces of evil.
Along with her advisor Luna (who happens to be a talking cat) Sailor Moon finds allies in the reincarnations of the Moon Kingdom’ royal court: Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus. Also fighting alongside Sailor Moon is the mysterious Tuxedo Mask, who serves as a romantic interest for Usagi.
Based on the manga by Naoko Takeuchi, the series was a pop-cultural phenomenon the likes of which were rarely seen in Japan up until that time. Spanning 200 television episodes, three features films and a theatrical short subject, Sailor Moon is one of the most popular and influential anime series of all time, not just in Japan but internationally as well. Shortly after it’s creation in 1992, the series first appeared on American television sets in 1995. The show initially failed to gain an audience in America, and after the first season seasons were dubbed efforts to bring more of the show stateside were dropped. It was only years later when a grass-roots effort by fans to bring the rest of the series stateside that the next two seasons and all three movies were dubbed and available for American audiences.
While the series caters predominantly to younger girls, it has found fans in people of all ages and walks of life. The series is largely credited in breathing new life into the “Magical Girl” genre, featuring females given extraordinary powers and abilities, forcing them to save the day instead of simply leaving it to the men. The show is widely regarded as a classic, in spite of it’s poor handling in the hands of it’s English dubbers.

Fighting evil be moonlight
Winning love by daylight
Never running from a real fight
She is the one named Sailor Moon
She will...never turn her back on a friend

With secret powers
All so new to her
She is the one named
Sailor Moon Fighting evil by moonlight
Winning love by daylight
