More about the Funimation One Piece
***Q: What will happen with the names, like Trace (Ace) and Zolo (Zoro)?
***A: FUNimation will be doing their best to be true to the manga being released by Viz. Zoro will unfortunately be Zolo on the TV broadcast version only. The uncut DVD version will keep all names unchanged.
***Q: Who will voice the StrawHats?
***A: Luffy: Colleen Clinkenbeard
Nami: Luci Christian
Zorro: Chris Sabat
Usopp: Sonny Strait
Sanji: Eric Vale
Chopper: Brina Palencia
Robin: Stephanie Young
Q: Will the show retain the original Opening and Ending Songs/Credits?
A: It is not known at this time. They are currently debating on what they will use for openings and endings. They are aware that an English version of "We Are!" was made at one point, so English versions of the Japanese openings/endings are certainly possible. But it is most definitely not known for sure at this point.
Q: What kind of editing can we expect?
A: The editing will be much, much less than the 4kids version. The FCC does NOT regulate what can air on cable channels, however, Cartoon Network has specifically stated that the consumption of alcohol and the smoking of cigarettes is not permitted. Also, the violence will be toned down to the effect where punches are accompanied by a brief flash, and flesh wounds that squirt blood will not squirt blood. Also, Sanji will retain his lollipop. As he is always smoking a cigarette, it would be too time-consuming to remove the cigarette completely, so they are going to insert the notorious lollipop instead. AND NO, A TOOTHPICK OR ANYTHING ELSE IS OUT OF THE QUESTION. It's a shame but... I tried asking that =/
***Q: What about DVD releases? Will they be the TV version, or uncut?
***A: Uncut DVD's are on the way. By uncut, they mean completely unedited or altered. "What you see is what you get.", is the quote that they have used to describe it. All of the violence, blood, and cigarettes can be seen in full glory on DVD's. Since Viz holds the rights to the first two seasons, we will not be seeing those released until the rights expire. The DVD's will be released to the public in 13-episode volumes for $49.99, beginning to be released in a time period ranging from November to February 2008.
Q: Where is FUNimation starting with their dub? Will it be the beginning? Also, when will these new episodes start airing and what channel?
A: FUNimation will begin dubbing for television broadcast where 4kids left off, right at the beginning of the Jaya Arc, episode 144. The new episodes will start airing in August on Cartoon Network. They are currently debating releasing the first 143 episodes Uncut on DVD first, and they are also debating to instead release Uncut DVD's from Episode 144 onward.
Q: Are they using the original musical score from the Japanese version?
A: Yes. They will be using the original musical compositions from the original version, as they want to keep the same atmosphere of the original series as they dub it.
Q: Will words like "nakama" be used in the show? What about other terms like Shichibukai? What about Sanji referring to Nami as "Mellorine" and using terms like "-swan" and "-chwan"? What about terms like "Knock-Up Stream", "Log Pose"?
A: There is reportedly some sort of "master list" that has been made that describe the romanizations of many One Piece words and names. As far as nakama goes, it is hard to say at this point. "Nakama" is being translated into a different word for the Uncut DVD subs and the dub. The term Shichibukai will be "Seven Warlords of the Sea. The ever-funny terms that Sanji uses with Nami's and Robin's names (-san/-swan and -chan/-chwan) will probably be dropped for the dub. "Mellorine" will be in the sub. The Knock-Up Stream will retain its name, and also, the Log Pose (the Grand Compass as known in the 4kids version) will retain its name as the Log Pose.
***Q: Will the movies be dubbed for release?
***A: Movie 8 will be released sometime in 2008 (YAY A DECENT DUBBED STORM!).
Q: What will FUNimation do about the high-definition episodes, from 207 and onward?
A: Not known at this time.
Q: What's the word on a UK release of the Uncut One Piece DVD's?
A: Nothing yet, unfortunately. Make your voices heard if you want these DVD's released in the UK!
Q: What about the attacks/names of weapons in the dub?
A: About 98% of all the names of weapons and attacks will be redone for the dub. Chopper's Point forms will still be referred to as Boost forms, though. Nami's Clima Tact (known as the Weather Forcer in the 4kids dub) will be called the Climate Baton. Attacks like Gomu Gomu No Pistol/Bazooka will be known as Gum-Gum Pistol and Gum-Gum Bazooka.
Q: Will FUNimation or Toei or Cartoon Network be gunning down K-F/ADC/Vegapunk/etc. Fansub sites to take down their content?
A: Not known at this time. Now is probably a good time to back up your collections of the episodes if you're concerned.
Q:What about swearing? What can we expect and not expect?
A: Certain terms like "damn, ass, and bitch" MAY be used. Words like "shit" will be replaced with something like "crap". This is Cartoon Network, after all. The Uncut DVD's, however, will have swearwords where appropriate, minus "shit" and f-bombs. If you're disappointed about the lack of "shit" due to Sanji using it all the time, remember that the real words he uses in Japanese ("kuso" and "chikuso") are very common words used in anime that can mean all sorts of things like "shit", "crap", "damn", and so on, so the words will change as Toei and FUNi see fit.
