This Information Could Save Your Life
And by 'Life', I mean 'Valuble Time Out Of'. You see, I'm going to edumacate some of ya'll on the finer points of job searching.
First, get the following together before eve starting out:
*Three character references not related to you. Have their name, occupation, address and phone numbers.
*The address of your high school, or college, if applicable.
*Your Social Secuirty number
*Your previous address
*Name, address, phone number & etc. of all previous employers.
* A pen
All right, now, you have to remember the three important ages. 16, 18, and 21. Very few places will hire you if you're under 16, and some if you're under 18. Any place that sells alcohol or tabacco won't hire you if you're under 21.
Now, if you're in a strip mall or large shopping pavillion, the best way to go about it is to ask for an application, take it, and continue on. Don't fill it out in the store; if you've got a lot of ground to cover, your best bet is togather applications, fill them out, then return them.
Two things to remeber during this process: First, some places use generic job apps that don't have their store name on them. Be sure to check, and label those that don't.
Second, "accepting applications" doesn't mean the same as "hiring".
If there's a particular job that you're really interested in, or you think you have a good chance of getting hired, call back once or twice a week. Don't be a pest, but ask, "Has the position been filled yet?" (Remember, out of sight, out of mind)
Finally, you *DON'T* want to work on commision-based pay. If you see/hear that, run, don't walk, away. Commission is bad.
Hope that helps.
