funny quotes from dinner
Listening to: Gwen Stefani "Harajuku Girl"I wound up spending about an hour and a half downstairs chatting at dinner. There were a lot of funny things said. "I know you need a warm body, but I will not stoop to do such a thing." - Elizabeth when Sean asked her join a softball game. "You should wrap yourself in toilet paper and jump out of a sarcophagus." - Dennis' advice to Sean on how to tie in next year's O-week theme into his interview for advisor. "There were so many more Asians in this year's freshmen group. For example, there's the 3 of you." - Dennis' referring to me, Amanda, and Elizabeth. Thus confirming that many people think Elizabeth wants to be Asian. "I like being white!" - Elizabeth's response. "What is 'Crochet'?" - Sean, after reading Dennis' BGHS campaign. "You mean 'croquet'? Oh crap! I spelled it wrong!" - Dennis

The mysteries of 224
Listening to: Lacuna Coil "Swamped" (Before Evanescence there was this band. Yay for goth bands w/ beautiful female lead singers!)People don't seem to know who me and my roommates are...or at least where we live. At dinner, Joe said, "You live across from [Rob and Parker] in the room w/ the anime on the door?" Do we not fit our "Waaahhh, we're stupid door sign." I guess it does seem like I appear in the guys' room and then mysteriously vanish. 2nd floor has a lot of squatters anyway. People's impressions of others are really funny. They think our room is quiet, but that's not the case. On a different note, anime club last night was fun. Lavvie from Last Exile is my new hero. I mean, props to the girl for throwing a chair at the captain of a ship full of snotty noblemen and initiating a giant barfight. She gave the Silvana mechanics an excuse to fight ("Oh, a woman in danger!"). The guys have a different hero: Kimura-sensei from Azumanga Daioh. Eeww, who wants to cosplay as that perv? Apparently they all do, except for Sean the prez who thinks cosplayers are scary. It would be fun to have an Azumanga Daioh group.

my little experiment
Listening to: Morning Musume "Night of Tokyo City" (Eric, you should listening to this one...it's not creepy-cute like some of their other stuff.)Okay, I don't have time to give a coherent report of the X Games and other things that have been going on in my life. I've been hella busy this past week so it might not be until Sunday when I catch up. However, I did want to share a funny thing that happened today. Here's the background story: this Saturday, I'm volunteering in the anime room of Owlcon, Rice's gaming convention. Since ADV is providing all the anime (and lots of goodies), I thought it'd be fun to cosplay as someone in an ADV anime series. Elizabeth thinks otherwise so she's borrowing my anime shirt. I was considering either Melissa Mao or Kaname Chidori, both from Full Metal Panic. I was planning on being Melissa, the tough army chick, since I swore I wouldn't ever be a school girl after A-kon. However, I have a skirt exactly like Kaname's, and my mom hasn't been too happy about my J-rock cosplay choices. She said that I looked good as Umi (not realizing that Asian + school girl = bad). Today was Parker's birthday. I gave him a beer cap popper, which according to Gabe, is the "best present ever." With the cosplay delimma in mind and Elizabeth out of the room, I conducted a little experiment (Sophia was shocked at my idea, but she didn't keep me from executing it). The plan: walk in the guys' room dressed as Kaname (basically white blouse w/ short turquoise skirt). Parker, Gabe, and Chris were beyond shocked. ^_^ I loved their reactions, which progressed to "OMG, I love this look." It was a bit scary to be thought of in this light, but I must admit that the attention was nice. Also, their initial reactions was totally worth it. When I told them about Owlcon, they encouraged me to go as Kaname. In fact, they wanted me to stay in the room (Chris even said, "Come and sit over here"...which was kinda creepy). Thus, I've decided to continue my experiment and see how much attention I attract Saturday. I think I've found my weapon against men, mwahaha...

Shakespearean Hokey Pokey
Here's a cute little parody (don't know who wrote it)"The Hokey Pokey: Shakespearean Style" O proud left foot, that ventures quick within Then soon upon a backward journey lithe. Anon, once more the gesture, then begin: Command sinistral pedestal to writhe. Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke. A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl. To spin! A wilde release from heaven's yoke. Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl. The Hoke, the poke -- banish now thy doubt Verily, I say, 'tis what it's all about.

Romanticism
Listening to: Good Charlotte "My Bloody Valentine" (Billy the guitarist is the reason behind my obsession w/ goth punk boys ^_^)Finally, after slaving away for hours, I am done w/ my paper for English 200! Our assignment was to write about the significance of a word, a single word, in one of the stories we've read: Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," Hawthorne's "The Minister's Black Veil" and "The Birthmark," or Melville's "The Bell-Tower." I picked Poe since I know that I can analyze him to death and still love his stories. My word was "gloom," which seemed like an easy choice until you realize that you have to generate 5 pages of good content. It makes the response papers for my other English class seem like a breeze. Don't get me wrong. It sounds like I'm complaining about my English classes, but in reality, I enjoy them. We're studying Romantic writers in both classes, and I love all the works especially the British poetry (Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Keats, Shelley...all gods). I guess you'd expected that from a self-proclaimed Romantic. Today was the perfect day to write my Poe paper though: "It was a dark, dull, and soundless day."

bliss of solitude
Listening to: Edgewater "Eyes Wired Shut"I'm still running off of the high from Saturday. I can't really describe the feeling, but that's what people mean when they say they're "high on life." You're so happy that nothing bad can ruin it b/c you're stuck in your own universe. It's like what William Wordsworth said in one of his poems the "bliss of solitude." However, being who I am and liking what I like can get lonesome b/c you wanna tell people all these great things that have happened, but they won't get it. Also, they might not be willing to be dragged into something crazy, like an FMX contest or a Dir en Grey concert. I guess the closest person to understanding every aspect of me is Eric, which is why I tell him practically everything. Anyway, yesterday I had posted my little review of the IFMA contests on 2 freestyle motocross message boards I was a part of. Everyone was glad to see me back (since I had stopped posting for quite a while), and I even got compliments on my write-up. ^_^ How is it that I meet all these wonderful FMX fans, riders, and industry peeps on-line, but I can't ever find one in person? It's irritating especially since I know some of them live in Houston. I guess that's the down side of living in a big city. I'll eventually get my pictures up, but I don't think they turned out that well. Seriously, I need to get myself a good digicam. Today I was down in the computer labs doing math homework, and guess who I saw? Mike-- yes, Mike as in the chem genius I had a crush on earlier this year. Yes, he did graduate, but he's hanging around b/c he's still looking for a job. I don't know whether to interpret this as a good thing or not. I was trying to get over him, but he's a cool guy.

FMX insanity!!!
Listening to: Danzig "Mother" (in honor of finally getting to see my favorite rider, Drake McElroy, in action)Last night's freestyle motocross contest was totally sick!!! I couldn't be any happier. I had a front row seat and I got to go the pit party, which is sorta a backstage pass to the FMX world. You get to walk the track and meet the riders. The ramps look so huge when you're standing next to them; the dirt bikes were pretty big too. I got autographs from Niki Danielson, Brian Foster, and a sport bike stunt rider nicknamed "Teach." I was in line to get an autograph from Chuck Carothers, X Games Big Air GOLD MEDALIST, when it was time for the riders to head back. :( Not getting to the pit party earlier was one of the 2 drawbacks that prevented tonight from being perfect. Did I ever say how much I love Rob (in a sibling sort of way)? On a last minute's notice, he drove me back from Reliant Stadium. I was so nervous that I had to ride the METRO alone (knowing self-defense wouldn't have helped too much) b/c the people that went w/ me totally bailed. Grr, how in the world can you be bored when you're told that there will soon be riders who backflip their bikes?! I was kinda glad they left though b/c then I was able to go totally crazy (I did refrain from jumping up and down though since kids were behind me). I so should've made a sign. B/c I did have to ask Rob for this big favor (I tried Dennis 1st since, as my relative, he's obligated to give me rides, but he wasn't there), I couldn't wait around for autographs. I also had to miss some of the doubles contest. Oh well, you win some and you lose some. The show had a little bit of everything: whip contest, street bike stunt riding, trials, the freestyle main event, mini-bike race, and doubles. Everyone was blown away by the street bike contest (street bikes being those big and colorful motorcycles you sometimes see on the road), and trials (where you maneuver a specialized dirt bike over an obstacle course) was big w/ the crowd too. Chuck won the whip contest (where you have to get your bike totally flat), but his bike broke down during the freestyle finals. I was stoked like no other to see Drake, Chuck, Dustin Miller, and some of the other big names from the X Games-- in addition to the guys I had seen at my 1st event: Derek Burlew, Jake Windham, and Jimmie McGuire. There were also some new guys, whose names will now stick in my head like Niki and Gabriel (forgot his last name, but he's 16 and from Chile). My mind's a bit hazy right now b/c the adrenaline is still pumping so I can't quite recap everything. Niki was flipping like crazy. Dustin had sick extentions. However, neither could put together a solid run. On the other hand, Jake was just on fire last night, which was why he won. I'm still impartial to Drake (who got 2nd) b/c I love his style and how he tweaks everything just so. It would've been a dream come true to have met him, but I'm totally satisfied w/ having seen him live. The minibike race was cute. Picture tough 20-something year olds who usually ride 250s, on little 50 cc bikes that come up to your knee. I wish I could've stuck around for all of doubles 'cuz that's twice the insanity. It's basically where 2 riders play "Follow the Leader" w/ their tricks. It's been a memorable night. I'm trying to refrain myself from raving about it to my roommates. I'll get my pics up as soon as I am done w/ my homework (which may be a while). I seriously need to find myself a boyfriend w/ a car. Actually that wouldn't help much if he wasn't a total FMX fanatic. Such a shame, I thought I had found someone at Rice as into it as I am. Anyway, thank you Rob (for the millionth time) for saving my butt and driving me back. Thank you to all the riders for putting on a sick show. I was so happy during the show that I almost cried. This makes a great prelude to the X Games next week. ^_^

when I should be doing hmwk...
Listening to: L'Arc~en~Ciel "Killing Me" (awesome new single)I really should be doing work. I really should, but I'm too jittery. You know why? I get to go watch freestyle motocross!!!! It's been 3 years since my 1st FMX event, and now I get another chance. Also, I've managaed to find another fan at Rice. ^_^ I just got back from DDR club, which should've worked off this energy. However I think I just gained some. A cool thing happened though. I met an upperclassman, and he asked if we've met before. I said that I didn't think so since I'm only a freshman and from Baker (on the other side). After he said that he was from Jones, I told him I was in Night of Scenes. That's when he said, "Oh, that's why you looked familiar. I saw your performance." Yay, I'm famous! Today I went to the biosciences/bioengineering fair w/ Amanda and Michelle. Amanda and I entered a T-shirt drawing, and guess what? We both won! Now that's a crazy coincidence. Anyway, yesterday I almost gave myself a concussion. I was kneeling under our bookshelf to get something, and I stood up too quickly. The spot on my head still hurts, especially when I was washing my hair. Oh well, I've been through worse...like not getting homework done in time. ^^;;

J-music, glitter, class, Shakespeare
Listening to: Malice Mizer "Beast of Blood"Finally the musical guest has been revealed! After keeping my eyes glued on the Kamikaze Con website last night, it turned out that they were having some technical difficulties. I figured it would be her...Kumi Koda!!! Today I decided to wear the new clothes that I got over the break, including the boots w/ 3 or 4 inch heels (I gotta get used to them before March). Parker loved my vinyl jacket, which Rob described as "very shiny." Looking at myself, I'm pretty much wearing my Toshiya costume, minus the "Bass" shirt. It doesn't seem much clothing-wise, but I think once I get the make-up and hair done, I'll be totally Totchi. ^_^ Anyway, physics was like usual. Math was an improvement from last semester. Our prof isn't foreign, and he looks really young. He seemed a bit unsure of himself, but he's very adorable. Reminds me of my math and science boys all grown up. My English seminar class will be interesting. It's centered on American gothic lit (hooray for Poe!), and I'm the only Bakerite. I might be the only English-science double major. The prof is cool; she let us out really early. We're reading Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner at the end of the semester. I was a bit scared since the prof said that it was a tough novel (and from past experiences w/ Faulkner), but then I decided that Intruder in the Dust wasn't so bad. I think in stream-of-consciousness anyway. The BakerShake Coffeehouse night was fun. The seniors (and Phil) were a bit shocked by my vinyl jacket. Joe and Phil felt compelled to touch it b/c "it's so shiny" according to Joe (who just couldn't keep his hands off of it ^^;;). Anyway, we read Taming of the Shrew and switched parts so everyone got multiple roles. It's much better when you read Shakespeare out loud w/ a bunch of people. It's also a lot of fun to insult each other in a Shakespearean manner while people pass by (Jared and Joe were doing that.)

Dir en Grey is funny
Listening to: The Brilliant Green "Tsumetai Hana" (another cool Japanese band w/ a female frontwoman)Last night and tonight, I showed Eric some funny Dir en Grey interviews I came across. They always make fun of one another, even Shinya the quiet one. He said that he'd be the only of the group to survive getting stranded in the snow b/c Kyo would fall asleep; Die would be so loud that he'd cause an avalanche; Kaoru would think a lot, walk around, and get lost; and Toshiya would just not be strong enough. Toshiya had a similar theory about if they were stranded w/ only a chocolate bar: Kyo would think, get mad, and eat it bit by bit; Die wouldn't think and eat it all up; Kaoru would calculate how much he needed but go insane after a few days; and Shinya would survive b/c he'd make precise calculations and save every little bit. LOL! Eric said that I'd act like Kaoru b/c I think way too much (to the point of going crazy). Then I said that he'd be like Die b/c he's loud, impulsive, and the goofy one. We also saw some cute anime drawings done by Kaoru and Toshiya. It was funny seeing how they portrayed their bandmates. This got us to talking about our "role" in a hypothetical J-rock band. Eric would definitely be the one who pretends to be scary and serious on stage but is really a prankster. I'd be the flirty one who is quiet offstage. We also talked about which Diru guy is suited for me (since there were all those quizzes online). Eric thinks Kaoru and I are a perfect match b/c we put on a serious front, think too much, and are indecisive about what to do (Kaoru admitted to not going on real dates b/c he never knows where to take the girl). I said that it wouldn't be a good thing if we were both indecisive b/c nothing would ever happen. Kyo would be too crazy and stubborn. Eric said that Die wouldn't work b/c it'd be like having another brother (who drinks too much); we'd just tease each other all day. Toshiya, though he's my big crush right now, might be too sexual (Eric said that he couldn't believe I said that since I am kind of hentai); plus he's very emotional and I'm not. We concluded that Shinya would suit me best b/c he's quiet, likes books, and hates smoking (the only one in the band that does). At first, I thought I would be too crazy, but you can't underestimate Shinya. He is the drummer in a J-rock band after all. I'm okay w/ having a prettier boyfriend b/c I've got some gender role reversal issues and you gotta think of the children. ;) I wonder what other people would say... (Eric would be okay as long as he doesn't do the Audrey Hepburn look.)
