2nd family
Listening to: "Heart of Sword" - T.M. RevolutionI'm slipping in a few comments even though rehearsals has gotten me worn out (and I still have so much to do). This is probably the last time I'm gonna double up on acting and tech. Watch me get suckered into it again next year. Anyway, I know I've ragged on the non-tech actors a lot, but tonight they've got all my praises. You see, I missed my 1st entrance while handling prop stuff. Luckily I didn't have any speaking parts, but it probably looked weird (sorry Mark!). I was a wreck after that since I was stressed about the play, my school work, and trying not to get sick. The actors who were backstage comforted me (along w/ our producer) so I'm not beating myself up as badly. Time and time again, I'm reminded why all of my friends are involved w/ theatre in some form. We're a family, and even though there are the tough, aggravating moments, we're there for each other. That being said, hopefully tomorrow will go more smoothly. Quote of the day: "B/c you are awesome." - Phil (probably the best words said to anybody)

no vacation for me
Listening to: "Fly Away" - F.I.R.It was an exhausting drive back home, but that was b/c Dennis and I left around 8 PM. Driving at night on the big highways is freaky. Despite almost starving to death on the road and getting really sleepy, I enjoyed hanging out w/ Dennis. We were singing along to the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack (Broadway version of course) and F.I.R. It's kind of weird how Dennis has a lot of the same CDs I do (we're already a lot alike). He's kind of my missing twin. I'm gonna have a very uneventful spring break just b/c there is SO much work to do. However, I do get to see some of my friends and watch some anime. Speaking of which, I was so worried about not seeing the end of FMA next Saturday that I wound up finding the last episode on youtube.com. It was amazing, and now I want to see how things get wrapped up in the movie. I love how they make the connection btwn out world and theirs. Oh, in response to y'all's comments on my part in Cymbeline, I'm not disappointed b/c I couldn't handle a major role (and there aren't many female roles for Shakespeare anyway...my part was originally male). Plus, I get to give a nice plot summary in the form of a prophecy. ^_^ I was glad they decided to add me as a Roman courtesan so I wouldn't be bored during the 1st half. Quote of the day: "It doesn't matter who you are...If you work hard, it pays off." - Ed Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist (he has sure matured a lot throughout the series).

Owl Weekend and Culture Fair
Listening to: "Chiisana Hikari" - fra-foaYesterday was the start of Owl Weekend. That's when people who have been accepted to Rice visit for a couple of days. My prospective student was named Emily (like the other vistor I had). I must admit that she didn't fit in as well w/ the movie room crew as the other Emily, but she's a cool girl. She's very independent so I could go about w/ my other work. While she was sleeping last night, I went to the movie room and we watched The Aristocrats, a documentary about this really vulgar joke. It's a thing that all comedians know about and have their own little version. That's all I'm going to say about it b/c I don't want to offend anybody. Speaking of that, if y'all haven't had the chance, check out my "Anime-ting the Past" articles. I've finally finished posting the sections, and I'm flattered by the responses. Some people kind of forgot the context that this was first written in: it was a term paper for my mythologies class. I could've easily written separate 10 page papers on each of the anime/manga series, but that would require time, which I don't have much of. Anyway, I'm still proud of my work. It'll be a while before I write more articles again b/c the occasion rarely arises. Now onto today's events: dancing in the Culture Fair was so much fun! I didn't know that many people would be watching us. :D Meera's mother took some pictures. Middle Eastern dance has become my new passion b/c it celebrates the power of femininity (after being a tomboy for so long, I need to get in touch w/ my inner woman). There was lots of food to try out and much to learn. The Zen Center representatives were super nice (what else do you expect from Buddhists though?). They gave me a book on mediation and an amulet representing compassion. Quote of the day: "I'm not going to die. Have a little faith in me." - Mugen, Samurai Champloo

Mardi Gras, w00t!
Listening to: Middle Eastern music (I'm getting ready for my dance performance on Friday)It's time to whip out those beads I got from my trip to Vegas. Harrah's (the casino) is like an eternal Mardi Gras. I want some king cake. Lab really sucked today 'cuz I kept messing up. I think everyone had a bad day though. I was talking to Mike, who was in the Lunar New Year performances, and we discovered that we have a mutual friend. In the middle of all this studying for orgo, I've been assembling props for "Cymbeline." I have to go through the weight room to get to the theatre hold. It happened that a guy was working out in there, and he said, "Hi" as I walked in. He also said, "Bye" when I left. I have no idea who he was, but it was nice of him. More people, including me, should do that. Quote of the day: "Why must I write/ You would not care for this,/ But she draws the veil aside,/ Unbinds my eyes,/ Commands,/ Write, write or die." - H.D. (Hilda Doolittle)

A short break from studying
Listening to: "Fang Kai Ni De Xin" (Release Your Heart) - Wang LeehomWhere did my weekend go? I studied a whole lot and yet I still have much to do. Well, on Friday, I went to Miyako's w/ Amanda, Jason, and 2 of Jason's friends. It was cheap sushi happy hour. Yesterday night, I went to the Lunar New Year performance. Dinner was good, and there were lots of cute dances and skits. The C-pop dance included the song that I'm listening to. I was gonna be part of it, but they had too many people sign up and I had just auditioned for BakerShake. One year, I'll dance. My favorite 2 performances were the martial arts demonstrations and the Korean-Chinese music video. The martial arts demo showcased various styles, including a nunchaku demo. In the end, they all came out and pretended they were 2 gangs duking it out in a club. One guy even threw a table. The girls were fantastic taking out guys bigger than them. The music video consisted of an original song (a duet in Chinese and Korean) and plot line about inter-Asian dating. Dennis' roommate, Jonathan, starred as the Korean boy, trying to woo a Chinese girl. It was so sweet! Okay one last thing: I've submitted my final article in my myth series so go check it out! I apologize if it makes your brain hurt b/c Evangelion is a doozy to analyze (but as an English major, I think it's fun). Quote of the day: "Damn it, there's so many idiots whose asses I have to kick! I'll have to start carrying a list just to keep track of them all!" - Ed Elric (this was from last week's episode...man FMA is getting so good, and it's about to end!)

Killing zombies is hard work
Listening to: "Vanishing Love" - X JapanThe title is a reference to a new story idea and a dream I had. I dreamt that I was a college student w/ 2 adopted brothers. We lived normal lives by day and fought zombies at night. It was very much like Buffy meets Resident Evil. I woke up feeling very tired b/c in my dream, I stayed up all night worrying about a zombie attack. This is the 2nd dream that has reminded me of a video game. Last month, I dreamt that I was a super spy that got stuck in a jungle, like in Metal Gear Solid. Maybe my unconscious is telling me to play more video games. Probably not since I've got so much work to do next week. I don't even want to think about how busy I'll be. In addition to my orgo exam, I have to have my lines memorized and the props finished for Cymbeline. I'm also part of the Middle Eastern dance group that's performing in the Culture Fair so there's rehearsal for that. Oh, I'm also hosting prospective students. When this is all over, I'll be ready for spring break. Quote of the day: Inara - "Should I start with the part where you're stranded in the middle of nowhere, or the part where you have no clothes?" Mal - "All according to plan."

shameless self-promotion
Listening to: "Summer Calling" - AndainSorry for not getting around to y'all's sites, but I've been hella busy. If you haven't noticed, I have a new article out. It's probably my favorite section of the "Anime-ting the Past series" (although the last one was fun to analyze and write as well). I expected some controversy since it was about Angel Sanctuary. So much can be said about that manga, and I'm still trying to figure some parts out. A funny thing happened in rehearsal today. There's a scene in Cymbeline where the Britons fight the Romans and Postumus (a Briton) calls out his enemy Iachimo. Jared is supposed to scream "IACHIMO!!!" When we first heard him say that, Austin goes "TETSUO!" and Brian and I reply, "KANEDA!" Anime and Shakespeare- now that's a thought. Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven." - Lucifer (the ultimate rebel) in Paradise Lost by John Milton

feeling better now, kinda
Listening to: "Go Mad Emotion" - CaminoI don't feel so sick anymore even though I'm still tired. I shouldn't have gone to bed so late last night. After Chris and I watched Final Fantasy VII: Last Order, I headed down to the movie room. Finally the guys aren't playing WoW all the time. A whole bunch of us decided to play Elixir, a card game invented by a Rice grad. It was fun but took longer than expected. I was gonna go to bed around midnight, but I wound up reading more of Seize the Night for 2 hours. Seize the Night is a book Becky let me borrow. It's part of the Dark Hunter romance series and is a very interesting take on vampires. That book is such a distraction! It also doesn't help the romantic side of me that wishes to have a bad boy or an emotionless jerk fall madly in love w/ me.

Go Team USA!
Listening to: "Girl" - F4I just want to congratulate the USA Men's Olympic Snowboarding Halfpipe team. The finals were just awesome (after having the X Games be kinda meh)! We didn't sweep this time around, but we came very close. Mad props to Shaun White for being his usual flawless self (though he did have us worried after the fall in his 1st qualifying run) and snagging the gold; Danny Kass for all his sick moves and getting his 2nd silver; Andy Finch for laying it out all on the line and going big even w/ an injury; and Mason Aguirre for just barely missing the podium and showing us how much an 18-year-old can rip. Bronze went to Finnish snowboarder Markku Koski, who I call "Mohawk boy" b/c he sported the look in Salt Lake City (the time/place where snowboarding finally gained respectability). I'm cheering for the gals tomorrow. Random midget fact from Phil: "The only way to stop midgets is to kill their queen."

Anime unites the worlds
Listening to: "Is This Love?" - Ayumi HamasakiBefore I go fan-girly, I just want to mention that I've got another article in my myth series up. The reception was (and I'm gonna slip into my skater/biker slang) totally sick. I can't really put to words how awesome the experience was, and Becky agrees. The Consulate General's house was huge and cool-looking. He and his wife were super polite, and the whole event was very classy. There were people serving us (I could've gotten alcohol if I wanted to, but I don't really drink), and the refreshments included sushi, egg rolls, and desserts. Watanabe-san was personally introduced to our anime club, and we got a picture. I must note that he always has sunglasses in his public photos. During the "mini-talk," we saw the 5th Session of Cowboy Bebop, and then he discussed the evolution of anime and his inspirations. I didn't get a chance to actually meet Vic Mignogna and Tiffany Grant (curse my shyness!), but I did get Watanabe's autograph. Our anime club also met the other big college anime club from U of H. We were joking about how this is the one time where we won't let our cross-town rivalry get in the way. In actuality, the guys were very friendly, and they invited to go to their meetings. Overall, it was an amazing experience that I'm glad I had the opportunity to attend. Becky was thankful that I made her my guest, and I think I turned her into an anime fan. Tickets to the lecture tomorrow were already sold out after I decided to not care about my family's plans for the weekend. However, there's always the cultural day, which is free! Quote of the day: "Now that I think about it, this probably wasn't a good episode to show w/ the violence." - Shinichiro Watanabe (you must know that a couple of non-anime people were there)
