   a quiet evening...not!
Watching: Spirited Away

Half of the movie room is gone, but that doesn't mean we're not doing stuff. It's Parker's birthday after all. Poor Jared, he's gonna have to deal w/ his roommates being drunk for an entire week (Rob's birthday is exactly next week, and Gabe's gonna be drinking w/ them).

Nothing too eventful today. I ran into Evan from English 200 last year and was surprised that he recognized me. I tend to fly under people's radars (whether it's by my choice or theirs is a different story). Also, I got to see the last exhibit in our art gallery. It's a colorful installation involving paint cans acting as drums and these 2 giant creatures that I think were described as "squirrel frogs."

Quote of the day:
"Why do they blame me for all their little failings? They use my name as if I spend my entire day sitting on their shoulders, forcing them to commit acts they would otherwise find repulsive. 'The devil made me do it.' I have never made one of them do anything. Never. They live their own tiny lives. I do not live their lives for them .... They talk of my going around and buying souls - never stopping to ask themselves why. I need no souls. And how can anyone own a soul? No. They belong to themselves - they just hate to have to face up to it." - Lucifer from Sandman (I'm probably the only person to quote the devil in their yearbook.)

   still busy
Listening to: "Kings of the Nordic Twilight" - Luca Turilli

Here's another short one since I still have much to do. My interest level in most of my classes has plateaued. I really look forward to dance though. The DDR club got Karaoke Revolution (now living up to our name karaoke-DDR club), which is the most fun game I've played in a while. I discovered that I'm good at singing Nickleback. As for anime club, Genshiken is my favorite out of what we're showing. Greg joked around, saying we should call Sean (the president) "Chairman" even though he's not creepy enough. I'm still wracking my brain trying to figure out what sort of dirt he has on Saki. Anyway, I'm off to do work. I still don't know what to do for the Hell party since i don't have much lying around in my closet. Maybe I can mooch a ride off of somebody, but everyone else is busy too.

   Happy Lunar New Year!
Listening to: "Wo Men De Ai" - FIR

Okay, the fun's over. The Moulin Rouge party actually sucked. It was fun getting dressed up for it, but there weren't that many casino tables and they were playing bad rap. Daniela had to go early, and Amanda refused to come. Becky decided not to wait in line to get the fake money. For a few minutes, I ran off and found Kisurb. He seemed to be enjoying himself so I danced w/ him a bit. I wonder if he's new to the whole party/dance thing or if he's just really social.

I was supposed to have gone to the Taiwanese Association's hotpot dinner tonight, but Amanda and Rob invited me to join them, Becky, and Jason. Rob made beef stroganoff, and Becky made marble cake. It's the Year of the Dog. Gong shi, gong shi, xing nian hoa!

   Welcome to the Moulin Rouge!
Listening to: "Elephant Love Medley" - Ewan MacGregor and Nicole Kidman (The combination of songs is amazing, and both actors are great singers.)

College night was fun even though the food sucked. Afterwards, Daniela decided to test out some make-up on me. She's really good so Becky joined in on the fun. Since we were all prettied up, we decided to go out to House of Pies. Then, we watched Moulin Rouge to get in the mood for tonight. Oh it's going to be so much fun!

Quotes of the day (both from the aforementioned movie, which you should watch if you haven't already):

"Love is like oxygen, love is a many splendored thing, love lifts us up where we belong, all you need is love!" - Christian

"The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return." - various characters

   Roaring 20s
Listening to: "Cell Block Tango" - from Chicago

Oh man, I didn't mean to sleep in until to 10:30 AM, but I have been staying up way too late this week. I really need to kick myself in the butt for doing so b/c I'm behind on my work. It usually can't be helped b/c Becky and I get off-track talking about all sorts of things, like the books we read.

Tonight's College Night, which means Baker is hosting a special dinner and almost everybody gets drunk by the afternoon. Our theme is Prohibition so I'm trying to find my most flapper-ish outfit. If that doesn't work, I'll go in what I call my "pseudo-suit." However, I want to save that for tomorrow's Moulin Rouge party at Lovett.

It looks like people are enjoying my essay so I'll try to submit Part II sometime this weekend. Anyway I'm off to do laundry.

Quote of the day:
Dr. Lapinky - "That's hot."
Class *stares*
Dr. L - "Allylic leaving groups are, like, so hot."

You asked for it, and now you're getting it
Listening to: "Stereoman" - Ellegarden

Just submitted Part I of VI of my mythology essay. I decided to make it much more easier to handle by splitting it up into the various anime series I discuss. Look for my analysis of Dragon Ball and The Journey to the West in the next 2 days.

Kamikaze Girls is one of the wackiest movies I've ever seen! It is every bit worth the hype although it takes a while to adjust to the bright colors, frezy, and seemingly random shifts in reality. I've heard it being described as "Amelie meets Thelma and Louise meets Excel Saga," and I say throw in a bit of NANA as well. I love Ichigo; she's someone I can relate to: tough yet vulnerable. I'm thinking of cosplaying her one day (after I get through my other planned costumes). Momoko really grew on me throughout the movie. I thought she was stupid at first, but she becomes really sweet and adorable. The summary makes it seem like a chick flick, and while it has those themes, I can see guys enjoying it as well.

   Even more good news!
Listening to: "curse" - Jeanne Da Arc

I got casted in Cymbeline! I play Philharmona (originally Philharmonous...we needed to create more female parts), the Roman soothsayer. It's going to be exciting being on-stage this year, instead of behind it. The rest of the cast is amazing; Chepe (the director) did an awesome job picking the roles. Jared and Michelle are our stars, Postumus and Imogen respectively. The rest of the movie room crew are involved in some way or another, be it acting, tech work, producing, or designing.

I rarely post quiz results in my text, but this Enneagram test was extremely accurate. My dominant personality type is indeed #4 - the Individualist.

Enneagramfree enneagram test
I'd like to take a complete version of the test to figure out the other aspects and narrow down my personality (I think I fall under "The Bohemian"). If you take the test, tell me your result and we can see how compatible we are. Also, www.9types.com has really good info on the Types.

Quote of the day:
"Look at my eyes Faye. One of them is fake 'cause I lost it in an accident. Since then, I've been seeing the past in one eye and the present in the other. So I thought I could only see patches of reality." - Spike Spiegal from Cowboy Bebop (That quote always struck me as poetic and profound.)

   Exciting news!
Listening to: "Saranai Tatakau Mono Tachi (FFVII AC version)" - Nobuo Uematsu

Sorry for not getting around to everyone's sites. myOtaku has been loaded really slowly for me.

Oh man, I just got amazing news! As most of you have heard, Shinichiro Watanabe, the creator of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, is lecturing at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, which is walking distance from Rice University. I was stoked about that already, but now I get an e-mail from the anime club president that 5 members are invited to go to a reception hosted by the Japanese Consulate General for Watanabe-sensei the day before the lecture. As an officer, I get first choice (of course, my answer was "heck yeah"). It's gonna be so cool!

Backtracking now, I went to a biosciences internship fair this afternoon. I was so glad that Becky and Amanda were there b/c they knew what questions to ask. Both have already had lab experience so I just kind of stood there and listened.

Rewinding even more, BakerShake auditions for Cymbeline were last night. They continue tonight, and I'm going again b/c I get to read more scenes. The auditions are different in that all of the applicants are in the room and we take turns reading out scenes. The laid-back atmosphere makes it less stressful and more fun. Cymbeline is an obscure Shakespeare play, but I recommend it b/c its plot sounds a whole lot like something you would find in anime.

Quote of the day:
"I'll do something!" - Postumus Leonatus, after ranting about how women are evil and plotting revenge since he thought his wife cheated on him, in Cymbeline by William Shakespeare

   Here's to all my Browncoats!
Listening to: "Love Around" - E.mu

I was about to change my avatar, but then I saw the great responses to it. Hooray for fellow Firefly fans. You can't stop the signal...

Anime club was fun last night. I love all of them, but I wish we could have a really serious show to balance things (although last year we had the "hour of death"). I love Nenene in ROD TV b/c I can totally relate, being an authoress myself. Scrapped Princess is cute. My favorite character is Shannon b/c he's so badass and chill at the same time. Genshiken probably made me laugh the hardest. Even though the club is denial, I think it paints a good characture of us (albeit a very exaggerated one). I was suprised by Irresponble Captain Tylor, which is an older series but still hilarious. Tylor is the type of guy who can talk his way out of ANYTHING.

Today was an easy day of class again. I really enjoy Intro to Middle Eastern Dance b/c our teacher is really into and it's just a lot of fun. I noticed that all my physical education class have had some cultural and spiritual element to them: martial arts, yoga, and now Middle Eastern dance. It's a very positive thing for me since I need to get away from the stress of everyday life. Plus I'm drawn to physical activities that usually extend to incorporate elements of one's life.

Some of y'all asked about the deep questions Kira and I discuss in our e-mails. We go all over the place, talking about our lives, society, spirituality, and whatever is raised w/ the books we've read or shows/movies we've seen. For example, we were talking about Fight Club and the issues it raised. Is there is something more to our ordinary lives just waiting for us? What would you do if you could re-evaluate your life and start over?

   Today's my brother's birthday!
Listening to: "Love Is Everything" - Fish Leong

Big shout-out to my brother (aka AznAssassin): Happy 15th Birthday!

I woke-up very sore today. I wonder if it's b/c I'm not used to sleeping on a bed half the size of the one at home or b/c I played tennis w/ Amanda on Tuesday. It was great to finally find someone whose skills are close to mine.

Yesterday I had Intro to Middle Eastern Dance and 20th Century Women Writers. I think I'm going to like both classes a lot. Then I went to talk to Dr. L about Honors Orgo. I think I'm gonna continue w/ the class and study really hard so that I don't have to rely on the extra credit to pass. ><

Before dinner, some of us decided to check out the special features on the Serenity DVD Gabe bought. Joss Whedon is hilarious! Later, Daniela and I went shopping at the Galleria. I wound up buying a couple things at the Hot Topic since theirs was much bigger than the one back home (and not full of posers). I showed Daniela a Gothic Lolita-inspired outfit, and she decided that she's going to get me one some day. We determined that Rice lacks "freaks," as in punks, goths, ravers, etc. It's probably b/c we're a nerd school. She counted me amongst the gothy people so I'm flattered since I'm too lazy and cheap to really be goth or punk (and my mom wouldn't appreciate it).
