Ah, hell, maybe I shouldn't bother. I've pretty much had to scrap the Black Lagoon article, I've got schoolwork to do, and the articles I wrote previously didn't seem to have any impact at all after the first week or so. Not to mention the fact that what Eva's doing is still so far beyond me that I doubt I could do justice to it without seriously digging deep.
But I think I have to try, anyways - I may not get another opportunity. There has to be more to studying anime than mere "aesthetics" on the one hand or "cultural study"* on the other. Anime, if its present state means anything to us, must be questionable in terms much more fundamental... not in spite of its being a novelty, but in many ways because of it, which is something I'm only now beginning to understand (cf what I said about "entertainment" in the Saikano article).
First issue: how the hell do I keep an article on Eva down to 20 pages while still being honest with the material? Second issue: How do I introduce the kind of thinking Eva is doing without immediately becoming overwhelmed (in other words: where do I start)?
*if I recall correctly, Brian Ruh (the Anime Research guy) actually studied under Susan Napier, so there's probably going to be a lot of the latter. Comments (0) |

Move Completed
Well it took about two weeks, but I am now successfully moved into Chicago. I am now thoroughly terrified of what will happens when the quarter starts up, and am cramming like hell. Oh no I haven't read Putnam and Aquinas yet!! What if they come up in class!!
Unfortunately I never got to write a certain number of mb posts I wanted to (esp. one which would have basically been Hume's Anti-Induction Argument 101). And at this point my nerves are too shot for it. Ah, well. More frantic, possibly pointless studying up, and then after that I guess it's time to check all the fansubs I missed. Comments (1) |

I love the way he stands there watching the solos.
And the week concludes with Monk, who is not only one of my favorite composers but as a performer is also completely unique. Just watch that piano solo a few minutes in. Just watch the thing. How the hell does he do that? Comments (1) |

Terii Rairii!!
Improvisational performance on a retuned piano. I kinda wish the video didn't split off for In C about halfway through (what the hell are are they playing? kotos?), but still. Comments (1) |

Penderecki!
Still as greyish as almost everything else the dude writes (some of his religious work excepted), but definitely one of my favorite modern concertos. Parts 2-4 are here, here, and here. Comments (0) |

Tu Rex Domine, Christe!
Okay, ignore yesterday's post, I'm declaring this rad contemporary classical music week. Part's music is really wonderful, and the Te Deum here (well, what they excerpt from it) is probably his best piece. His late work has been getting very popular in the past few years, which it really deserves. Although, I would make a note that the extremely stripped-down style he's been working with in recent decades can be understood much better when you also know about the earlier, louder and nastier stuff that it grew out of (his cello concerto, the early symphonies, and so on).
