OIKAKETE, KAKENUKETE

Ah, Shogo. Possibly the greatest love letter to Japanese animation ever made by amerikajin fans: a first person shooter where half the time you're piloting a transforming mecha and where the story hinges around both REVENGE FOR THE DEATH OF YOUR BROTHER and also trying to PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT. It's like they crammed the essence of anime circa 1982-1992 into a shooter plot. It's thoroughly American and Americanized, of course (what fps isn't?), but those involved put a lot of love into this thing... and this was back in 1998, when anime was still relatively obscure (no entire back walls taken up by manga in Borders, Toonami barely a year old, Suncoast still keeping anime to a back corner filled with old VHS dubs with gaudy covers).

It failed, of course, probably because it was ugly even for its time and not all that well-made (lithtech engine, anyone?). Half-life's release just sealed its fate. Still, it's a fun historical curiosity, and that song is just catchy as all hell.
