E's Otherwise
Title: E’s Otherwise
Length Viewed: 1st DVD, 4 episodes (I think)
Genre: Sci-Fi / Mutant-Psychics
Rating: 3/10
Recommended Audience: 12+ and up. So far the violence is pretty bland. They attack each other with mostly energy blasts. Someone does get shot, but in the media realm it was pretty tame. Some language is used but it’s on par with prime-time TV…
Synopsis: It’s the future, stuff is all owned by this uber cooperation made of 12 companies. Kai joins this special division of the uber company because they agreed to take care of his sister. It’s suggested in the plot that his sister may be a super powerful psychic and therefore he might be too. So he’s trained and such. Kai proves to be a bleeding heart, willing to sacrifice his own team member and have her killed to save a child and endanger other members of his time. He’s injured and found by some annoying animal empathy and nursed to heath. He questions his own abilities and his role in the uber cooperation….
Plot: Yeah, E’s otherwise is pretty much similar to the various future world populated with the rare Meta humans who have special powers. They do however put an interesting spin on and have a cologmorate of corporations as the head of what would be the government’s sector…Which could be some foreshadowing for our own time. Other than that, the plot kind of bothers me. We have an all too abrupt time skip in the first episode. You see the main character, Kai shooting and all of a sudden it’s now a year later. It also has the oh so pivotal “golden child”, a young kid who may have some great power, Kai’s sister. It just seems too typical, watching this series makes you seem like you saw it somewhere before. Idealistic young man breaks away from the organization with his own mission to find his own sense of purpose in life…and he has powers! …Hmmm We saw this in FMA, s-CRY-d, even something similar in Grenadier and I’m countless other shows…The only good episode so far as been he 4th where Kai was in drag. He made a FANTASTIC woman XD
3/10 for effort.
Characters: Kai is an awful main character; you really don’t care what happens to him. He’s kind of annoying, and two-dimensional… He’s really playing up this whole honest, good and I don’t have to use violence act to a hammy level. On an equally awful level is Asuka who looks like she’s 12, is trying to hard to be cute and is the quinesstinal, nice, perky, animal loving, and clumsy but well intentioned anime girl. Everyone else is pretty much just bland backgrounders. The only characters of interest are Shen-lon and Shen-lu even if Shen-lon was stereotypically cold and “badass” he was more entertaining than Kai. And the one red-haired bishie, who name I just forgot, who comes into conflict with Kai….He was the most believable and likeable character. A bit of a mercenary and his motives, values were a bit unclear. At least he wasn’t completely readable and predictable like Kai…
2/10
Animation: Meh. Neither good nor bad. Kind of the typical CG animation quality that you get from most shows. Some of the effects were nice but it was nothing special. And a lot of the times, especially on females, the skin was shaded to make them look plastic, which drives me nuts….
4/10
Music: The opening was pretty good, I though the ending was annoying. I was disappointed by the lack of good/noticeable BGM. It left the show feeling pretty sparse and with too much “empty sound”. Or the background music was so ill placed it failed to reinforce the atmosphere.
3/10
Overall, it’s not an awful show, just not a good one. It’ll entertain you slightly if you’re bored enough. It’s not a series I’d recommend buying or even renting… but if it ever comes on TV or you can borrow it from a friend, by all means. I won’t stop you. Had the characters been fleshed out better and certain aspects of the story changed (even keep the pseudo-futuristic Meta human premise) it could’ve been a decent show. It’s good show to what when you’re missing the X-men Saturday morning cartoon or even X-men Evolution.
