Chapter 13

Saturday rolled around; the week seemed to have blurred by until the day of their date. Max picked Tera up, saying they were going to the mall to hang out. Joyce knew better, but said nothing and waved the two friends off. If they had their way, they would be more than friends after this day. It was raining outside; Tera brought her umbrella to cover the two of them. Sadly, her umbrella was filled with holes, and they ended up getting wetter under it than they would have without it.

“Sorry ‘bout that…” Tera grinned sheepishly as they entered the mall. Max told her it was no big deal, and they began to explore the building, looking for somewhere to go. Eventually, Tera pointed out a hat store, called Chic Chapeau. Apparently, it meant “Cool Hats”, but Tera explained that to Max later. She grinned, and they ended up trying on a whole bunch. They found all sorts of hats, from jester hats to baseball caps. Eventually, Max bought Tera a baseball cap (he’d insisted on buying it for her.) and put it on her head.

“Oh, Max!” Tera said dramatically, pretending to swoon, “I shall never remove it! Ah!” She grinned at Max, punching him lightly in the arm. He returned the friendly gesture, and they continued through the mall. They’d gone to many men’s clothing stores; Tera personally didn’t like shopping in girly stores. The two of them found a store called “Xtreme Boutique”, a store that sold skateboards, clothes and other sorts of equipment. Tera came out dressed like what most people labeled “skater”, but she just grinned and said showing her boxers was something she didn’t like to do. The two of them bought a few pairs of clothes, Tera insisting that she pay for her own.

“So… how’s it been so far?” Max asked, while chewing on his burger, “the date, I mean.” They’d ordered some food from McDonald’s; mainly because its lines were the shortest at the moment. She grinned at him and took a bite out of her burger, then a sip of her soda.

“It’s been great.” Tera smiled, looking up at the digital clock on the wall, “holy crap, it’s getting late. Let’s get back before the rain gets worse.” She crammed the rest of her burger into her mouth and chewed it, grabbing Max’s wrist and taking him back to the entrance. They finished the rest of their food and continued the walk back to the dorms.

“Wait!” Max said, stopping Tera’s pull, “I’ve got something I want to show you. Follow me.” He grinned and ran off, leaving Tera to follow this time. Eventually, she followed him to the park, where a large crowd of people had assembled. She was curious as to what was going on, until she saw a set of waterproof fireworks shoot into the sky. The brilliant lights glowed bright, the colors that were associated with Thanksgiving appearing in the sky.

“Whaddaya think” Max asked, walking up to Tera, who looked awestruck. She was still wearing her baseball cap, and was holding her umbrella by her side. She looked at Max and smiled. Something wet rolled down her face; Max assumed it was the rain. She ran forward and hugged Max, grinning slightly.

“It’s wonderful… thanks for showing me.” Tera said, smiling. Then, Max began to leaning for a kiss. Tera was a bit surprised, but obliged him right away. They kissed passionately for a few moments, but it seemed like forever. But, before the happy feeling sunk in, Tera broke the kiss, looking up into Max’s eyes. She looked as though she felt guilty, turning away from Max.

“I… I’m sorry Max.” Tera said, putting a hand on his shoulder, “but, you’re just on a break from Roxanne… I couldn’t steal such a great guy from her.” She smiled sadly and kissed him on the cheek. Then, she ran off, heading for the dorms. Max stood there, dumbfounded, and reached out for her, even though she was gone. He sighed and looked down, noticing her hat had blown off.

Max eventually arrived back at the dorms, knocking on Tera’s door. She answered it, surprised to see Max so wet and sad looking. He smiled at her and put her hat back on her head. She looked up at him, her turn to be dumbfounded. Max’s smile had faded, and he looked very sad; sadder than she’d ever seen him.

“Tera…” Max said, brushing her hair out of her eyes, “if there’s any chance… even the smallest chance… that we could ever go out again, just wear that hat to class on Monday. Then I’ll be sure that this date wasn’t a total bust.” He smiled and kissed her on the cheek, walking away, his head bowed. Tera looked at Max, a strange pain in her heart. She sighed sadly and went back into her room, waiting for Monday.

When Max got to class on Monday, he didn’t see Tera around at all. He sighed; he was hoping she’d come. And just when he thought she wouldn’t be there at all, she came. Her hair stuck out in odd angles, as it always did, and she was wearing her pajamas and bunny slippers again. However, something was different about her usual morning antics. She was wearing the cap.

“Hey Max.” Tera yawned, sitting next to him, “I’m sorry for hurting you on Saturday… if you and Roxanne ever break up… just know that I’ll be around to pick you up.” She smiled and kissed him on the cheek, before falling asleep at her desk again. Max just smiled and brushed her hair out of her eyes, making sure to take notes for the both of them.
