Chapter 34
The day of the play rolled around, and the entire campus was buzzing about it; not only was it being held on school grounds, but there were rumors that a scout was going to be there as well. Max grinned; he’d gotten free tickets for him and Roxanne, thanks to Tera. However, when he came around to Roxanne’s dorm, she was coughing up a storm. She looked terrible, and told Max to go without her. He nodded and left, feeling a little bummed that he’d have to get rid of the extra ticket. Then, Joyce popped up out of nowhere and ripped it out of his hand.
“Thanks for inviting me, Max!” Joyce smiled at him, apparently not noticing his gaping expression, “I couldn’t get a ticket, so I decided to borrow your extra. You don’t mind, do you?” He shook his head no, a little peeved that she’d stolen it and was eavesdropping. They headed off for the show, not noticing Roxanne peeping out of her door. She pulled out a washcloth and wiped her face, most of her ill appearance going with it. It was a good thing she’d done the stage make-up; otherwise, she’d never have figured out a way to weasel out of the date with Max.

The play looked very interesting; it was starting by the time Max had gotten there with Joyce. They’d found their seats by Bobby and P.J. just as the curtain came up. Tera was on stage, dressed like a girly girl at a pajama party, it seemed. They were talking about her missing dad or something, and how she was going to track him down. The idea of Tera dressed up as a girly girl made him have to stifle a laugh, but it seemed to be a good premise thus far. After a few moments, however, she’d reappeared on set in a boy’s school uniform, among several other students.
“What’s up, homeslice?” Tera said in a mock deep voice, her character trying to be cool it seemed. However, whether it was scripted or not, she bowled over a guy who was walking in her direction, ending up straddling his waist when they’d stopped rolling. After a brief argument, they’d swapped names and stormed away from one another. The play was interesting to say the least; it was packed full of innuendo and strange twists.
Max’s favorite part was the scene where Tera’s character “Phil” ended up becoming the science partner of the boy she’d bumped into at the start of the play. They were arguing over what to do for a project; the actual guy’s physical fitness project and “Phil’s” solar system project. Eventually, the other guy (Who was apparently called James) caved in, saying that Phil was too soft for anything physical like that.
“You don’t even have a firm chest; you’re all soft like a girl.” James said, grabbing Phil’s chest without a thought. Everyone laughed at that, and Max could tell Tera was still surprised. However, whether instinctual or not, she punched him in the face, knocking him over and almost clear across the stage.
“I have a sensitive chest, you idiot!” Phil yelled, grabbing “his” chest, “that’s why I wear bandages there, you chowder head!” Then, Tera stormed off the stage again, bumping into the mysterious new teacher her character had been assuming might have been her real father because of his description. She apologized and left, leaving the scene for the teacher and James to talk out.
Later on in the play, James managed to eavesdrop of one of Phil’s phone calls, realizing “he” was really a girl in disguise. However, Phil had managed to figure out that the man “he’d” thought was his father was just a man who had looked like him. James confronted Phil in the hallway, revealing that he was in fact Lilly, who the mysterious teacher had now recognized. After being exposed, the teacher seemed to actually be Lilly’s father after all. However, instead of the Technicolor kiss they’d been expecting between James and Lilly, there was a fist in the face, and Tera’s character and the teacher left the stage, as the final curtain was drawn.
The audience cheered as the actors and actresses took a final bow, the guy who played James looking a little swollen; Tera hadn’t been letting up on his at all when she’d been hitting him. Then, the curtain closed again, and people went backstage to meet with the actors. Tera was swarmed by her family and friends, who were congratulating her. When she saw Max was alone, she looked surprised.
“I thought you came with Roxanne!” Tera shouted over the clamor, noise filling the backstage area. Max shook his head and had explained that she was sick; he didn’t notice Tera’s brief expression of joy when she’d made it. Then, he said he’d be going on another date with her to the House of Mouse; it would be easy to get there.
“Who’d be filling in for you as the valet though?” Tera asked. However, that problem was remedied quickly; Max suckered her in to fill in for him. Then, he was gone, along with the others. However, a strange looking man in a yellow tuxedo and matching sunglasses came up to her, smiling widely at her.
“Babe, you’re just what we need for our comedy troop!” The man grinned, patting her on the back, “you’re tough and you’re hilarious! Plus, our troop needs another girl. So, Tera, whaddaya say? You wanna be in our troop? We aren’t all that famous, so you won’t have to worry about being hassled.” The man was talking so fast she had barely been able to catch what he was saying. She was glad to hear she was being considered, but had really wanted to finish college.
“Um… I’ll get back to you on that…” Tera said to the man, moving his arm away from over her shoulder, “I wanna finish college… I’ll call you if I change my mind though, okay?” No sooner had she said it than he had produced a calling card, handed it to her and left. She stared at the card for a moment, then nodded, pocketing it and heading to her dorm room.
“So… I’m filling in for Max tomorrow…” Tera muttered to herself as she lay on her bed, “maybe if their date goes badly enough, I can scoop Max for myself as the rebound!” She grinned for a moment, before scolding herself for how selfish that was. If he was the kind of guy who’d go for her, she wanted him to do it on his own terms, instead of as a rebound relationship. Besides, rebounds didn’t last very long, as far as she knew.
Roxanne is a sneaky devil... but it's all for a good reason! She may seem a little out of character, but I'll reveal why when part 2 is done... anywayz... read and review!
