Garaa: Shukaku Imagined
Garaa is a very shadowy character in the manga and the reader doesn't get to know much about him until later in the series. He is relatively short compared to his peers, he doesn't like to speak and until you actually fight him [or anger him] he has massive power and is capable of completing B rank missions [this is phenomenal for a genin]. Nevertheless, he is an amazing shinobi and because of his arcane power he is used by the sand to complete their paramount missions.
Garaa [much like Naruto] had a demon inserted in him as an infant. This demon was inserted in him by his father in order to seal away the Sand Demon known as Shukaku [a high priest]. Because of this, Garaa's mother was used as a sacrifice in lieu of letting the demon escape. Garaa must stay awake his entire life. Why? Because Shukaku will arise in him [if Garaa sleeps] and will reek havoc in the world around him. Needless to say, Garaa has nary gotten sleep in his lifetime and because of this has an erratic personality.
All of this was origniated from the Sand Villages' thirst for power. In order to advance the state of their military the Sand needed a killing machine, an excellent shinobi. Garaa's sand controlling acumen can prove useful inside his village due to the obvious abundance of sand. As a child Garaa would wonder why children were so afraid of him; he never realized his awesome power was something to be feared in the village. As Garaa grew older and stronger so did his notoriety in the village. It came time for the Kazekage to assassinate Garaa for the good of the village and himself. Of course, Kazekage's plans to assassinate Garaa failed; his own creation came back to haunt him. Thus, the Kazekage decided to keep Garaa on an "invisible leash" in order to prevent Garaa from doing anything treasonous
Garaa's mastery of offense and defense can be seen through three of his skills: the sand in the gourd in his back, the Sheild of Sand and the Armor of Sand. Although Garaa may seem perfect to many this is obviously not true, his weaknesses were kept as secrets in order to prevent the enemy from ascertaining a method to defeat him. Gaara carries a Gourd on his back which is normally used to carry various liquids instead he has something better: sand and the blood of his victims. One of his unseen and most effective defenses is the Armour of Sand which is a layer of invisible sand that covers his entire body. The Armor of Sand is technically a last resort once someone gets past the Shield of Sand. This attack is an automatic defense system which Garaa cannot activate; sand surrounds his body at the point of attack to prevent damage.
Garaa's two other attacks which are even deadlier and even more impossible to live to tell about are the Desert Coffin and the Dessert Graveyard. The Dessert Coffin entagles the opponent in a thick layer of sand enabling them to only breath. Next Garaa employs Dessert Graveyard which literally squeezes the opponent to death in an instant. The opponent feels nothing; he dosen't have enough time to react to the pain.
Garaa is a character that few have ever entagled with and lived to tell about. His apparent ruthlessness is a by-broduct of the demon inside him and there are always questions raised about his true personality if he did not have the demon controlling him.
