I'm not sure about that one...I imagine it went down sort of like this:

Gravedigger: Man, do I ever have the best job in the world!

Random Guy: What do you do all day?

Gravedigger: I dig!

Random Guy: Hey, that is pretty cool! I can dig that! Get it? Dig!

Gravedigger: Hey, that's pretty funny! Dig!

And, from then on, stupid people used the word "dig" as an expression of coolness. The fools.
