Past Collides with Present: Chapter 1
My first story! Read and tell me if you like it! If you do, I'll keep posting. It's Yu Yu Hakusho, based on Kurama and his relationship with his mother. No, I don't own Yu Yu Hakusho. So please don't sue me!
Chapter 1: Kidnapped!
Shiori Minamino walked out of the sushi bar, carrying the dinner she had ordered for her family that night. It was quite dark, but she wasn't worried. This part of the city didn't have much violence, and anyway, her house was just down the street. However, she did hurry just a little as she passed by the park. She didn't notice the presence that watched her from just inside the border of trees.
As she walked, she thought about the surprise party she was planning to hold for her step-son, Shuichi. She was going to come home from work early to decorate the house, then get her son, Shuichi's elder step- brother, also inconveniently named Shuichi, to take him somewhere after school to give time for his father and friends to come over. However, she still needed to buy a few decorations.
Her train of thought was interrupted with a hand on her shoulder. She turned around, then gasped in surprise and dropped her bas of sushi as a fist punched her hard in the stomach. The last thing she saw before she blacked out was a pair of cold, pale orange eyes.

An hour later found a tall boy with long red hair walking down the same street, albeit the other side. Kurama was coming home from a soccer game. He didn't care much for sports, but his one good school friend had asked him to come along and besides, it was the first time in years that his school's team had made it to the playoffs.
His preoccupation with the evening's events wasn't enough to stop him from noticing a strange smell, however. He stopped, looking toward the park across the street, completely puzzled. He was sure his nose was hallucinating, if that was possible. What would a demon be doing around here? /Besides myself, that is,/ he thought with a smirk. He decided to ignore the smell, if he wasn't imagining it. It was too faint to trace properly anyway.
He continued down the street until he reached his house and was instantly comforted by the smell of the flowers rising from the gardens in the front yards. He pulled open the door and walked through the front hall to the kitchen. "Tadaima!*" he called.
"Okaerinasai**," was the answering call from somewhere upstairs.
Kurama smiled and opened the refrigerator, looking for something to drink. He nearly hit his head on the milk jug when something ran into the kitchen and jumped on his back. "Shuichi!" he complained with a smile. "You could have hurt me."
His younger step-brother grinned as he pulled a coke out of the fridge. "Can't have fun without risk," he teased.
Kurama didn't bother to respond to this as his step-father entered the kitchen. "Hatanaka-san, where's Mom?" he asked. "I was hoping she would already have the sushi by the time I got home."
Hatanaka frowned. "She went to get it a while ago and hasn't come back. I think there may have been a problem with the sushi, or maybe she just ran into a friend and hasn't stopped talking."
Kurama remembered the faint scent he thought he had detected near the park and began to get an uneasy feeling in his gut. "Maybe I should go look for her," he said, heading toward the hall.
"Good luck and be safe," Hatanaka called after him.
Kurama didn't acknowledge as he closed the door and hurried down the front walk. He briefly considered calling the Yusuke and the others, but dismissed it quickly. Hatanaka was probably right. Shiori was gabbing with someone while the sushi rotted, and the smell Kurama had noticed wasn't really there. Boy, would Yusuke laugh at him when they found her.
Kurama hurried down the sidewalk toward the sushi bar. Shiori's scent still hung in the air, but just barely. Suddenly, he stopped. The phantom demon scent was back, only it was stronger this time. Kurama was feeling queasier by the moment as he spotted something laying in the darkness by the trees that bordered the park. He knelt down by the object and picked it up.
It was Shiori's sushi bag.
/Oh, damn,/ Kurama thought, looking toward the trees. He got up, leaving the bag where he had found it and following the scents of his mother and the unknown demon into the park, pulling out his rose whip as he entered the darkness under the trees where the streetlight didn't reach. He liked his life as a human, thank you very much, and he didn't want his family to find out that their beloved elder Shuichi was actually a demon named Kurama, but he would do anything to keep his mother safe, including spilling the beans about his past.
Suddenly, Kurama froze. Then he slowly put his rose whip away, knowing it wouldn't be needed for now. The demon wasn't in the park anymore.
Kurama smelled the distinct odor that was given off every time a portal was opened between the Makai and the Ningenkai. He knew that the demon had taken his mother to the worst possible place a human could be taken to. He cursed silently and began to open another portal to Makai, taking a fair guess as to where the demon had gone by the Makai smell that was mixed in with the portal smell.
/Stay strong, Mom,/ he thought as he began to transform into Youko Kurama. /I'm coming for you./
*I'm home.
**Welcome back.
