Old Dog Serenade
So many of us walk these great halls in search of advice, friendships and shoulders to lean on. Some have asked why I know the things I know. While others ask what makes me say the things I do.
I can only offer this as an explaination. To simply put it, I've lived and loved longer than you. I have walked on the wild side and have carried a millstone around my neck. I have seen three decades pass with memories in every one. I have raced the ages to destiny's door and fallen victim to my past. Yet I have also risen like a phoenix. I have shed that skin and broken the millstone in twain.
I will march proudly to my end for it is filled with flowers and wines, promises and granduer.
I stand in the gap for you, my friends, to offer a hand. To give you what I know and teach what I can to those who would listen. To be placed on my back like so many others before. These shoulders stand broad and this back made strong. I have weathered storms the likes of which I pray you will never know. I have swam in deep oceans and climbed high peaks. I have been to the place where one heart is made from two. And I give myself daily to the one who stands at my side. I do not walk alone anymore. She is with me and for that I truly thank God. What, to me, is a great pain? To know that all good things must come to an end. To feel the warmth of friendship along with the sting of loss. To it's mighty throws, I yield. If this be what is asked of me, I take it with gratitude. Knowing that just one of you were touched by my words is all I needed.
Firm and steady, I shall stand upon this rock. It's what I've always done. That's what this old dog will continue to do. Until the final curtain, when flame has flickered it's last light.
I will stand here, with you, for you.
