Story: Hearing a howl I turned swiftly. Markus I whispered, racing in the direction of the cry. Within seconds I could see my brother, he was fighting with some wolves. Or at least he was attacking one, the others were trying to protect themselves and keep him at bay. Not again I sighed, running towards the fighting. Markus! I shouted, hoping it would get through to him, but it didnt. Surging forward I threw myself into the path of the wolf that had just lunged at my brothers throat, knocking him away, before turning my back on him. Markus! I shouted again without success. Maria I heard him murmur, before he threw himself at me catching me across the face and throwing me backwards. I sucked my breath in sharply as I felt his claws rip threw my flesh, crimson splatters appearing on the floor at my feet, as I stood up, turning and facing him, lunging forward again to block his path as he flew at the smallest wolf. MARIA! I screamed at the top of my lungs, and Markus immediately stopped, looking around slightly bemused. Lyra? He whispered, looking at me before dropping to the ground unconscious. I sighed with relief, staring down at the body at my feet, whipping some blood off of my chin. Shaking my head I stepped forward, preparing to pick Markus up and carry him back to the village, but as I did my head started to spin causing me to sit down. Shit I swore silently to myself. I didnt think I had lost that much blood. I shook my head to clear it, and tried standing again. What just happened? Said a male voice behind me, and I turned now facing the wolf which had spoken. What do you mean? I asked forgetting that not everyone was use to my brothers fits. That guy He stated pointing at my brother. Why did he attack usand why is he now suddenly unconscious? I sighed looking at him seriously wondering if I could trust him, finally I decided that he, and the rest of them, deserved explanations so I started to explain. My brother I started, indicating to Markus. He has fits where he attacks anything and anyone that moves. It all started when he and his mate Maria were captured by some of Jaguaras troops, they did awful things to them bothand in the end Maria died. Thats when the fits started; the only way to stop them is to call her name so he can hear it. The white wolf who had spoken sighed sadly, and the other wolves stepped forward, as they did I had my first good look at them, the wolf who my brother had first attacked, was grey with a scar in the shape of a cross on his chest, the smallest was brown and had bracelets on his front right paw, and the last one was a lighter colour than the smallest one, and had a collar around his neck. Who are you? I asked looking at each of them in turn, and just as I expected it was the white wolf that answered. Im Kiba, thats Tsume. He said indicating to the grey wolf. Hige The one with the collar, and finally, Toboe he finished pointing to the smallest. Who are you? Hige asked curiously. My names Lyra and this is my brother Markus. Hige smiled. Its nice to meet you He said and I nodded in reply, once again trying to stand, and once again failing. Finally after my 5th attempt to stand, Tsume stepped forward, picking me up bridle style and turned to the others, Kiba nodded and he and Hige picked up Markus. Where bouts do you live? Tsume asked in an exasperated voice, and I glared at him before answering. In that village on the top of the hill. I stated pointing at it. Kiba nodded seeing the little hilltop village and we started off towards it. About half an hour later we had reached the gates, and after much arguing I got Tsume to put me down. DAVID! I yelled, looking up at the small tower. WHAT? Came the reply. HURRY UP AND OPEN THE GATES! I shouted back as a very annoyed David climbed down and opened up the way for us. Thanks I said sarcastically, nodding the others through. After a few more cutting remarks to David, I lead the way through the houses to mine. It was only small but we didnt need much. I opened the door and stepped inside holding it open as Kiba and Hige carried Markus in and laid him on the bed. Once everyone was in I walked over to the small sink, filling a bowl with cold water, before fetching a flannel and sitting on the bed beside him. Slowly I rung out the flannel, placing it on his forehead, a few moments later he started to stir. Lyra? He murmured groggily. Yeah. I replied smiling at him. Not again He whispered and I nodded. Did I hurt you? He asked in a worried voice, and I quickly covered my cheek. No I lied Im fine. Markus turned his head, and spotting the new comers he looked at me questioningly. These are the people you attacked I explained laughing slightly. Kiba, Tsume, Hige and ToboeThey brought you here. Markus turned to them smiling. Thank you. He said, and the others simply smiled nodding. I thought you said I hadnt hurt you! I heard Markus say and I quickly lifted my hand to my cheek again. Lyra he started. Its fine Markus. I stated simply, shaking his hand away. Its just a scratch. Markus sighed and I felt a hand on my shoulder, looking up I saw Kiba looking at me meaningfully. Come on He said taking my arm and leading me over to the sink. Kiba Im fine. I argued. I dont care. He replied. Im still going to sort out that wound. Sighing I sat down on the stool as Kiba cleaned up the cuts. A week later Kiba and the others were still with us, and Markus was up and about again. I liked having them with us, and even though I knew that they would soon move on, I couldnt help but hope that they would change their minds and chose to stay here instead. I was standing at the entrance to the village when one of the children ran up in a panic. LYRA! He yelled, racing up to me. Richey? Whats wrong? I asked trying to calm him down. Its Markus and David. He finally stammered. David went mad and hes attacking Markus I didnt wait around to hear what else had happened racing off in the direction Richey had been pointing in, just praying I wouldnt be too late. After a few minutes I heard shouting, and racing around the corner I spotted them fighting. Markus! David! I yelled, but neither of them paid any attention to me. MarkMARKUS! I screamed seeing David pull out a knife and surge forward stabbing him in the chest. NOOOO! I screamed again, racing down towards them, falling to my knees at Markuss side, hot tears flowing down my cheeks. Lyra? Markus croaked. Shhh I whispered placing my hands on the wound and pushing down hard trying to stem the flow of blood. Shhh dont say anythingYoull be fine Lyra Markus started but I interrupted him again. I said youll be fine! I repeated. Lyra Markus whispered shaking his head and taking my hands off the wound. Im not going to make it and we both know it. No! I whispered I dont know it, you will survive, you have toplease Markus shook his head again, a tear slipping down his cheek. Ill see Maria again. He whispered softly, smiling. Please I whispered completely breaking down now. Please dont leave me heredont go somewhere that I cant follow Do you remember what mum and dad use to say? Markus asked his breathing heavy now. No! I said shaking my head. They use to say that when a wolf dies its spirit goes to paradiseand that if someone, a wolf, finds it and opens it, we can all go to paradise together, all of them, everyone youve ever lost. Markus I started, knowing where this was going. Please Lyraplease let me go. I shook my head, hating myself for what I was about to do. I love you Markuswill you and everyone wait for me there? Smiling Markus took my hand nodding. Yes He whispered stroking my cheek. Ill see you in Paradise. I stared at his face, my heart breaking as his hand fell from my cheek. Yeah I whispered finally, closing his eyes. Ill meet you there. I sat staring at the ground in a daze, before looking up at David, my grief replaced by hatred and uncontrollable rage. You! I hissed through clenched teeth. You bastard. L-Lyra David stammered, slowly backing away as I got to my feet. Please Lyra it was all a misunderstanding I laughed coldly. Oh so stabbing my brother in the chest and killing him was all an honest mistakeBullshit. I snapped slowly stalking closer to him. I smiled as his eyes grew wide, standing in front of him was a very big, very pissed off, golden wolf, and I stepped towards him again, my icy blue eyes flashing with anger. So I could accidentally slip and my fangs could accidentally rip your throat out. LYRA! I heard someone yell in the distance but I didnt pay any attention to it, I had my eyes set on David and there was no way that I was going to let him get away with what he had done. I smiled coldly as I saw a look of hope appear on Davids face, a look that soon disappeared when I lunged forward, knocking him off of his feet and then pining him down, my mouth at his throat. Its nothing personal. I hissed as I felt him shaking with fear. Its just a simple misunderstanding. By the time Kiba and the others had reached me, David was dead, I was sitting by Markuss side, my back turned to them. Lyra? Tsume asked in a worried voice. Are you ok? Tsume I heard Toboe whisper and I knew that he was pointing to Markus. Oh god Tsume murmured kneeling beside me, putting his arm around my shoulder and pulling me close, at first I resisted but eventually I couldnt hold it all in anymore, burying my head into his chest I cried, I never use to let anyone see me cry, I was always strongnot anymore, Markus was gone, he was the person who had kept me strong, now I had no-one. I dont remember how I got back to the village, or how long I stayed in the house for, but eventually I left, Tsume took me outside to see Markuss grave, he had been buried out the back of the house. I stayed by the grave for what seemed like hours, and finally I let go, I remembered something that Markus had said to me. The past is the past Lyra, you cant change it, only look back at itthe past makes you who you are, but dont always look to your pastnow you have to look to your future. I stood, nodding, I cant look at my past anymore, only the future matters now, whispering goodbye one last time I went back inside. Are you ok? Kiba asked as I walked in and smiling sadly I nodded. YeahIm ok So Toboe said thoughtfully. What are you going to do now? I looked around the house, for a second and realising that the only thing that had kept me here was Markus, I looked up smiling. I dont knowwhere bouts are we going now? Everyone in the room turned and looked at me, and finally Tsume stood up, coming to stand beside me. Anywhere you want! He said with warm smile. Yeah Lyra! Hige agreed stepping forward. Where do you want to go? I smiled at them all, knowing the answer immediately. To Paradise! I said finally, and the others nodded at me, Tsume placing his arm around my shoulder as we made our way to the gates of the village. Are you sure you want this? He asked as we stared out at the sunset, and I nodded. Yes I said firmly, glancing at the others, my friends, my new familymy pack. I will see you again I whispered to myself, staring at the now setting sun. Slowly I leant my head against Tsumes shoulder, I felt him shake slightly and then slowly he put his arm around my waist, smiling I reached up and kissed him softly. Pulling away I blushed and apologised and laughing slightly he pulled me closer to him one hand under my chin as he leant down. Pulling back I looked at him surprised as I felt his lips touch mine and then smiling I closed my eyes I kissed him back, slipping my arms around his neck. From the left of us someone coughed, and laughing we ended the kiss, and glancing over at Hige I poked my tongue out, and stepped away from Tsume. Then as one we raced away from the place I had called home, and I felt free, laughing I howled as I ran, and soon all the others were howling with me. Its a promise I thought to myself. I wont leave you and I turned my head and glanced quickly at Tsume, who smiled happily at me. I smiled back. Its a promise! And at last I was on my way, I couldnt help but think that this was what I had been waiting for, the thing that I had felt that I had been missing from my lifeand as one we were runningwe were searching for paradise.
