San Anselmo boy arrested after Molotov cocktail found at school
Gary Klien
A 12-year-old San Anselmo boy was arrested at White Hill Middle School yesterday after teachers learned he had stashed a homemade bomb on the campus, authorities said.
Police said the boy learned to make the bomb, described as a goblet-sized Molotov cocktail, from "The Anarchist Cookbook," a guide to bombmaking and sabotage. There was no evidence the boy intended to detonate the device, said Fairfax police Sgt. Chris Morin.
"He thought it'd be cool to make it and brought it to school to show it off," Morin said.
Police said the boy hid the bomb at school on Wednesday, but word did not filter to the teachers until yesterday afternoon. Police and firefighters arrived and found the device, a glass jar with a cloth top, in a vent area under a portable classroom.
Firefighters removed it themselves rather than call a bomb squad.
"The thing was basically useless by the time we got there," said Ross Valley fire Battalion Chief
Michael Denning. "He rolled it under the school and it rolled on its side, and the liquid ran out. Most of the liquid had either evaporated or dissipated."
No one was in the portable or nearby rooms at the time, said Principal Michele Patterson. At that point the school day was nearing an end, so teachers walked students to buses waiting along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, Patterson said. Because of the bomb investigation, the buses could not come up Glen Drive and use the school turnaround.
"The teachers had them line up single file and each teacher walked each class to Sir Francis Drake," Patterson said.
The student who allegedly made the bomb was booked into Juvenile Hall and will be suspended up to five days, authorities said.
Student Devon Johnson had this to say about the incedent: "I know him, and he wouldn't do anything to hurt anybody. He's really a nice guy, he just did something really stupid in order to get attention."
