   Religion & Abortion Threads?
I've just closed another abortion thread in OL. I say "another" because I know we've had several...and I'm sure that I've closed at least one before.

I always feel very conflicted and unsure when I close this type of thread. On the one hand, I can see that some people do want to have a legitimate discussion. And I respect that.

But on the other hand, I am all too aware that a lot of people tend to bring down these threads. It's hard to have a discussion about either of these topics when they can become so personal. And when people take points of view as personal attacks. It's just a very messy situation.

But I hope that most people are at least a bit relieved by these threads being discouraged in more recent times. Yes, we've had them before. And they do tend to be divisive. So, I sometimes wonder how they can do any good at all. I mean, yes, I do want people to be able to discuss serious issues in Otaku Lounge. I don't want every thread to be a "wat skool do u go 2?" type of thing. But members always seem to fall back on these "controversial" topics whenever things get slow or boring. It annoys me. It just shows a complete lack of inventiveness, in my view. It's almost the laziest form of thread you can make...because you know that even if you put no effort into your first post, everyone else will jump in and respond anyway.

I guess it's one of those situations where I just have to make a judgement call and hope that it's right. If enough people wanted it re-opened, I'd probably open it up again. Either way, it's a difficult decision to make. I usually anger someone when I close threads like this.

Oh well. I'm at least happy that most people on OB seem to have matured a lot...at least, compared to how things were on v1 and 2. I'm glad that I don't have to deal with these things on a daily basis anymore. It was tougher in a way when that was the case.
