Through the Looking Glass (Part 32)
Aino and Daedalus are back at the horses with Lycurgus. Aino pulls a small bag out of a back pack that was tied to Osin’s saddle. She puts the tip of the Ice Sword in the bag.
Lycurgus: Oh wow! That piece is huge! Where’d you find that?!
Daedalus: In a tree. Now be quiet. Who knows if the Dark Army’s around here or not.
Aino puts the small bag back in the back pack She looks in the back pack.
Aino: Hmm…
Daedalus: What?
Aino: Oh I’m just wondering if my CD player still works.
Lycurgus: What’s a cee-dee player?
Aino: Well…it’s a little hard to explain, but, you have this disk (she pulls out her CD player, opens it, and takes the CD out) and you put it in this like so, and it plays music.
Lycurgus: That’s awesome! Let me try!!
Aino puts the headphones on Lycurgus and pushes play.
Lycurgus (yelling): I can’t understand what they’re saying!!
Daedalus: You don’t have to shout.
Lycurgus (“”): What?!
Aino pushes stop on the CD player.
Lycurgus: Hey where’d it go?
Aino: I turned it off. Well at least it survived the lake. Oh…
Daedalus: What?
Aino: I just realized…I’m never going to see my family or friends…
Daedalus: What are you talking about? They’re…dead, remember? Well your family is anyway.
Aino: No, I mean, my other family. The people who took me in when I didn’t know who I was. I don’t think I can ever see them again.
Lycurgus: Why not?
Aino: Well…it’s all very complicated. And you may not believe me.
Lycurgus: Why would you say that? And why is that music in a different language?
Aino: That’s exactly my point. See, I don’t think that where I was found when I lost my memory isn’t even on this planet. Let alone this universe. Where I’m from, people don’t believe in Elves. Well, for the most part. And the race is humans. See, when I was in this place, I didn’t have pointed ears.
Daedalus: What?
Aino: I know it may sound weird, but all of this is true. And the language we spoke was called English. Well in my country anyway. It’s like here I suppose. In some territories, not all creatures speak Elvish, right?
Lycurgus and Daedalus nod.
Aino: And my accent? I didn’t use to have that when I was younger. Well, when I came to the other planet, in the country I came to, England, this accent is native. I don’t know why. Are you guys following me?
Lycurgus: Uh…sure.
Daedalus: We should probably get going.
Aino: - -;;
