Photobucket - Video and Image HostingUS Report: Notorious Prison Closed

This article relates to the Jessup Prison which was closed on Monday March 19. On March 2nd a Police Correction officer was killed which prompted the closing of the maximum security prison. The prison is 128 years old and has become one of the most notorious prisons in MD.

One of the principles that relates to this article is principle #3: Rational People think at the Margin. After the three prisoners were killed and a guard was stabbed to death last summer the prison has become more of a concern for both the staff and the inmates. Another principle concerning this article is principle #7: Governments can sometimes improve market outcomes. In this case the invisible hands are the inmates and staff of the Jessup Prison. They need to government to protect from others as well as themselves. The government in this case is also needed t promote the efficiency of the staff being able to do their jobs without fear of being killed. The government also needs to be able to promote equality among inmates and staff. They need to make sure that everyone is safe and treated equally.

I do support this action if people are getting killed then the best idea is to separate the inmates and move them to a more secure location where they can’t hurt anyone. This relates how the government can sometimes help us with issues coincernuing safety. True some people will lose their jobs but like I always say “better safe than sorry.” This also relates to how after something bad continuously happens then its time to do something about it. What can happen is people become unemployed and if they’re unable to find work unemployment rises. Also, the inmates are moved and separate to other prisons and the same problem once again develops. Or, my favorite everyone lives happily ever after.

   Essay #4
Photobucket - Video and Image HostingHow did you become interested in nature and why is nature education important and/or environmental science important?

I was never necessarily interested in nature itself but with the environment that surrounds me. I saw how pollution affected the air and the water and I wish there was something I could do to make it better or at least contain it for the mean time. When I talk about it with others they always have an opinion of who’s at fault. But, it’s not just the U.S.; other countries are experiencing the same problems with pollution. The overuse of our scarce resources leads us to play the blame game, rather than coming up with a solution we just keep polluting the world we live in. We throw tissues and plastic cups from McDonalds on the ground, knowing that there is a trash can an inch away from where we’re sitting. Trash littered everywhere, that trash that travels and pollutes places like the Baltimore Chesapeake Bay.” Everyone’s always blaming someone else who they view as the “polluters,” funny really because the reality is that we are the polluters. Rather than blaming each other I want to help create a solution. This leads me to my field of study.

It took me years to know what I really wanted to do. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to become a teacher, because my mom was a teacher. But, now my educational goals are basically to get my high school diploma, get into a good school, and become a biotechnologist and hopefully one day acquire a PhD. In my sophomore year in high school I finally knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to become a Biotechnologist. This dawned on me when I took a Biotech semester course in 10th grade. It hardly went into details about what biotech really is. However, the things we did like hydroponics: growing plants in water instead of soil made me interested in biotech. I was very fascinated by the prospect of it and then actually seeing my plant grow was amazing. At first I was afraid that it wouldn't grow, because after the first week, I thought it might die because you're not suppose to over water plants and here we were trying to grow a plant out of water. But, then the plant started to grow and the container we put it in was becoming precipitated. In order for the hydroponics' plant to grow it couldn't live in the same condition as the plants we were used to. Instead, it needed its own way of growing which included an isolated container from outside factors like temperature that could end up affecting its growth.

After this experiment, I began to wonder if this can be done in the field of biotech then what else is there. Then one day when our teacher was absent and we had a substitute we were given biotech articles and magazines to read. I found them all interesting. For instance, I was taken back by the idea of using nanotechnology to treat pollution. I also learned that the hydroponics' plant experiment that we did could be done at home and be used as an alternative to growing foods such as rice or enhancing fruit sizes, which could ultimately lower food prices. Since, there would now be newer and better ways to grow, so we wouldn't be overexerting the agricultural and environmental component of the world we live in. In addition to, I learned how biotech research can aid in finding cures for various types of diseases. These were some of the things that made me interested in both industrial and environmental biotechnology.

ESSAY #2 & 3
Photobucket - Video and Image HostingWrite a short essay describing the career you have chosen, your plan for obtaining this goal, and your plans for financing your education.

In order to be successful in the future and to make sure I graduate from college, I have to know what steps to take to ensure that success. So, when I enter college the steps I'm taking to make sure I graduate and as one of the best students, is buckling down. Joining study groups and making sure that I understand what the teacher's teaching. No procrastinating! Which is a big problem, because I'm one of the people who prefers' to put things off until the last minute. I need to utilize every tool available to me, because to be successful, I have to be willing to do things that will guarantee my success.

I’m not a big fan of loans so I want to put off getting loans as much as I can because I know I’m going to have to end up paying them, so what I’m planning on doing is applying for as much scholarships as I can. I’ve already completed my fafsa and now I’m looking towards applying for other scholarships and grants.

   Scholarship Essay
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting500-1000 word essay describing the importance of a college education and exceptional community service and extra-curricular activities you have been involved in.

Education is one if not the most important thing for me to achieve. That is why a college education is at the top of my list. Both my parents put high excellence first, without an education you can't hope to become anything. They both believed in working hard and earning your way through life rather than being given everything. That is why I find education to be the key to success in order to achieve anything in life you need an education preferably a higher level education. I see people here in the U.S. and going to college is no big deal for them when their young. But, when they get older they realize how important a college education really is.

Being born in Nigeria I know and understand the importance of a college education. Graduating from high school means absolutely nothing. Graduating from college is when it is seen that you have achieved and even then it still means nothing if you don’t have a job. In Nigeria securing a college diploma doesn’t automatically mean that you get a job. In fact there are thousands of people who graduated at the top of their class and are still looking for jobs. So, being here in the U.S. with an opportunity to achieve that my peers don’t have; I’m going to take that opportunity and be the best that I can be. So, that not only do I graduate as one of the best but that I secure a place for myself when it’s time to go out in the working field. Not only do I place high importance on a college education, but I also believe that my community service hours and extracurricular activities will aid me in becoming a leader of tomorrow.

One of my involvements in school activities was earlier this year when my Spanish teacher wanted to throw a party. I was one of the major people who helped her plan the party and decorate; we spent an entire week making sure everything was perfect. Another involvement was in 10th grade when I was SGA historian and I helped plan New Town High School’s first sophomore dance. Other instances which I have demonstrated by ability to follow and regulate the rules were last year when I was Poetry Editor and I was involved in the planning and distribution of our Literary Magazine “The Promethean Pen.” There were suppose to be at least 7-10 people aiding us and we only had a week left to put things together, print and distribute. But in the end it all fell on only three of us and we all worked together, it was one of the best editions we’ve ever made. Furthermore, during the summer I worked at Liberty Senior Center as a volunteer and I was mainly involved with setting up for lunch, distribution of foods and cleaning up afterwards. But, these little activities helped me realize how something so small can be quite a task. Setting, distributing and cleaning all take a longer time when you have to do one after the other. Doing these things helped me greatly with my communication skills because I talked with some of the workers there and was under their guidance during my couple of days. Then later when I got the hang off it, I was able to do it on my own. The importance of a college education, community service and extracurricular activities have all helped and will help me to become a better leader, better student, and to be able to work with others and cooperate with them and get things done even when under pressure.

   Modest Proposal
Photobucket - Video and Image HostingSaran-wrap solution:

I walked outside to look at the clear blue sky and what do I find, smog as far as the eye can see. My eyes began to water and my breath got shallow and I felt like I was being suffocated. I had to rushed to the hospital by a friend when I got there they told me it was do to the lack of fresh air. A problems caused by pollution, if only there was a way to contain it. I voiced my concern to the people of California and they all had different opinion as to who is at fault. It’s not just the state of California or the U.S., other countries are experiencing the same problems with pollution. The overuse of our scarce resources leads us to play the blame game, Stacy Lear of Seattle, Washington reflects her views “it’s the businessmen’s faults for creating those factories.” Chairman of Mongolian Clothes and fashion Inc., rebutted by saying “It’s the people’s fault for not taking care of the environment properly. Trash littered everywhere, that trash that travels and pollutes places like the Baltimore Chesapeake Bay.” Everyone’s always blaming someone else who they view as the “polluters,” funny really because the reality is we are the polluters. Rather than blaming one another let’s create a solution.

The Pollution Solution:
The problem: pollution
The solution: saran-warp
I know many of you think this is some kind of weird joke, but seriously listen. With saran-wrap we can contain the pollution. Put it all over the sky and the California smog will no longer affect us. Lay it down in the water and the trash will go there and stop polluting the water and destroying the little fishes we love so much. We will finally be doing something than just saying “oh, I want to do something about this.” Jake Gillard of Chicago, Illinois says “You know at first I thought this was a dumb idea, but then I saw the crew put up the saran-wrap and it actually works’, who knew!” Many American are now getting saran-fever, those who were never aware are Dr. Lillia Gibbens and environmental biotechnologist who’s been working on a solution to this problem for 12 years says “I love this idea, the saran-wrap is clear so people are aware of it, but it still does the job even we couldn’t do.” Saran-wrap is taking the world by storm, countries in West Africa and South Africa have also put saran-wrap in the sky as well as in the water. Australian Prime Minister John Howard has set their saran-wrap to go up a week from Thursday. “This is the best thing that could have happened to us, we finally have a solution that works!”

p.s. This is all my idea
