Essay #4
How did you become interested in nature and why is nature education important and/or environmental science important?
I was never necessarily interested in nature itself but with the environment that surrounds me. I saw how pollution affected the air and the water and I wish there was something I could do to make it better or at least contain it for the mean time. When I talk about it with others they always have an opinion of who’s at fault. But, it’s not just the U.S.; other countries are experiencing the same problems with pollution. The overuse of our scarce resources leads us to play the blame game, rather than coming up with a solution we just keep polluting the world we live in. We throw tissues and plastic cups from McDonalds on the ground, knowing that there is a trash can an inch away from where we’re sitting. Trash littered everywhere, that trash that travels and pollutes places like the Baltimore Chesapeake Bay.” Everyone’s always blaming someone else who they view as the “polluters,” funny really because the reality is that we are the polluters. Rather than blaming each other I want to help create a solution. This leads me to my field of study.
It took me years to know what I really wanted to do. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to become a teacher, because my mom was a teacher. But, now my educational goals are basically to get my high school diploma, get into a good school, and become a biotechnologist and hopefully one day acquire a PhD. In my sophomore year in high school I finally knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to become a Biotechnologist. This dawned on me when I took a Biotech semester course in 10th grade. It hardly went into details about what biotech really is. However, the things we did like hydroponics: growing plants in water instead of soil made me interested in biotech. I was very fascinated by the prospect of it and then actually seeing my plant grow was amazing. At first I was afraid that it wouldn't grow, because after the first week, I thought it might die because you're not suppose to over water plants and here we were trying to grow a plant out of water. But, then the plant started to grow and the container we put it in was becoming precipitated. In order for the hydroponics' plant to grow it couldn't live in the same condition as the plants we were used to. Instead, it needed its own way of growing which included an isolated container from outside factors like temperature that could end up affecting its growth.
After this experiment, I began to wonder if this can be done in the field of biotech then what else is there. Then one day when our teacher was absent and we had a substitute we were given biotech articles and magazines to read. I found them all interesting. For instance, I was taken back by the idea of using nanotechnology to treat pollution. I also learned that the hydroponics' plant experiment that we did could be done at home and be used as an alternative to growing foods such as rice or enhancing fruit sizes, which could ultimately lower food prices. Since, there would now be newer and better ways to grow, so we wouldn't be overexerting the agricultural and environmental component of the world we live in. In addition to, I learned how biotech research can aid in finding cures for various types of diseases. These were some of the things that made me interested in both industrial and environmental biotechnology.
