3D Realms denies Duke Nukem Forever using Doom 3 engine
Besides revealing a cornucopia of Grand Theft Auto details, yesterday's Take-Two Interactive call also mentioned 3D Realms' legendarily delayed shooter, Duke Nukem Forever. In the question-and-answer session that followed the company's earnings call, Take-Two CEO Rich Roedel fielded a question from UBS analyst Mike Wallace. The exchange went like this:

Wallace: "And then just one more [question] for fiscal '05. Is Duke Nukem [Forever] in the plan?"

Roedel: "No, it is not in any of the guidance that we've given."

Wallace: "OK. And should we just completely forget about this product by now or...?"

Roedel: "Absolutely not, although it has been frustrating in terms of committing to a ship date. But the 3D Realms guys continue to work. They are using the Doom 3 technology, which is finished. They are a premier developer, but they certainly believe in no line before it's time. So they want to deliver a great game, and we are anxiously waiting for updates from them."

If true, the Doom 3 engine would have been at least the third engine used by Duke Nukem Forever. When the game was first announced in 1997, it was to use the Quake II graphics engine, also from id Software. Then, in 1998, the Texas-based developer announced that the game would use Epic's Unreal engine instead.

[UPDATE] However, it now appears Roedel's official statement to the press was in error. An item on Shacknews today from 3D Realms' George Broussard flatly denies the Doom 3 engine will be used. "We are not using the Doom 3 engine for Duke Nukem Forever," he said. However, Broussard and other 3D Realms employees declined GameSpot's repeated requests to comment on why the head of Duke Nukem Forever's publisher would make such a public mistake.

GTA:SA coming to the PC in 2005
Rockstar will bring San Andreas to the PC next summer; no Xbox port on the horizon.
Today Take-Two Interactive's earnings report had PlayStation 2 owners complaining about having to wait an extra week for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. However, the same report informed PC gamers that they'll have a whole year to kill (no pun intended) before they can play the epic crime game.

Buried at the bottom of Take-Two's financial report was the following line: "Additional products planned for fiscal 2005 from Rockstar Games include Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for PC in the third quarter." Take-Two's fiscal third quarter runs from May 1 to July 31, 2005, so the game should arrive in that time frame.

While welcome, news of San Andreas for the PC was not unexpected. PC versions of GTAIII and GTA: Vice City similarly followed suit after several months. Unfortunately for Xbox purists, no mention was made of a version for the Microsoft console.

Japanese fans of the GTA series also got good news, since Take-Two said that "Rockstar also plans to release Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in Japan in fiscal 2005."

Take-Two reports loss, reorganizes publishing division
Take-Two Interactive Software today released financial results for the financial quarter ending July 31, 2004. The company reported a net loss of $14.4 million, or $0.32 per share, on revenue of $160.9 million. For the same period last year, the company reported net income of $5.7 million on revenue of $152.1 million.

Also announced was a streamlining of Take-Two’s publishing operations, which were reorganized into two labels: Rockstar Games and Global Star Software. Rockstar Games will emphasize premium-priced games such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Revolver, while under Global Star’s umbrella will be the ESPN sports game line and a mix of premium and value-priced licensed properties. Products from the company’s formerly PC-centric Gathering label will also be published under the Global Star brand.

The next quarter looks to be a strong one for Take-Two, with Global Star poised to release ESPN NHL 2K5 and ESPN NBA 2K5, as well as Conflict: Vietnam, the next installment in the successful Conflict series. Its highlight will be Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the latest version of Rockstar’s flagship franchise. The PlayStation 2-exclusive game's launch was pushed back a week to October 26 to allow for a final round of testing.

Looking ahead, Take-Two CEO Richard Roedel was optimistic, saying, “Our product pipeline going into 2005, which includes titles based on proven franchises, new brands, and licensed properties, is one of the strongest in the company's history.”

During the earnings conference call, Take-Two also introduced new personnel added during the quarter. Barbara Kaczynski, most recently chief financial officer of the NFL, was appointed to the company’s board of directors and will chair Take-Two’s audit committee. Sam Judd joined as senior vice president of planning and administration after 11 years at Viacom, and David Messenger joined as senior vice president of human resources, bringing his expertise from leading Towers Perrin’s change management practice.

Nobuhiro Watsuki to Work on Shinsengumi PS2 Game

TOKYO--According to the upcoming issue of the manga weekly Shonen Jump, Sega's Red Entertainment division is developing a 3D swordfighting action game for the PlayStation 2, which will be based on the Shinsengumi, the real-life military group from Japan's late Edo period. Titled Shinsengumi Gunrou-den, the title's key selling point will be that manga artist Nobuhiro Watsuki, creator of the popular Rurouni Kenshin series, will be designing the characters. Rurouni Kenshin, sometimes retitled Samurai X in its US incarnations, revolves around the same historical events.

Shinsengumi Gunrou-den takes place in the late 19th century, when foreign influences over Japan were growing stronger and the government's power was getting weaker. The player's objective in Shinsengumi Gunrou-den is to protect the old capital city of Kyoto against a group called the Ishin Shihi, who are plotting a revolution that would bring down the feudal government, and restore the country's control to the Emperor.

The player in Shinsengumi Gunrou-den takes the role of the real-life Shinsengumi commander Okita Soushi, and fights against the Ishin Shishi with sword slashes and various special attacks. Other historical Shinsengumi members such as Saitou Hajime, Kondou Isao, and Tsujikata Toshizou are confirmed to be in the game, although it's unknown for now whether or not they will be playable.

Fans of Watsuki's art will note that the character designs of Shinsengumi members in Shinsengumi Gunrou-den are different from those in the Rurouni Kenshin manga series. For example, while Okita Soushi appeared in Kenshin looking nearly childlike, he's depicted in Shinsengumi Gunrou-den as a young man.

Shinsengumi Gunrou-den is slated for release in December at the retail price of 7,140 yen ($65).
