Side story....
Hikaru woke with a start as the fire alarms sounded. The suddenness of the sirens had his head and his heart pounding. It took a moment for him to realize he had fallen asleep while studying in his apartment. In the distance more sirens could be heard as the fire department arrived on the scene.
There was a frantic pounding at the door and the urgent voice of a neighbor, "Hey, Nakamura, are you in there? Come on, kid, get up. The building's on fire!" Then the sound of coughing and the slump of a body outside the door.
Hikaru opened the door and found his neighbor unconscious in the hall. He grabbed the man and pulled him into the apartment. He got the limp body over to the window and out onto the fire escape into the fresh air. The cool night air revived the mand, and Hikaru asked if he thought he could get down on his own.
"I...I think so," the neighbor said. "What about you?"
"I'm going to see if there's anyone else trapped up here. Now go."
The man grabbed Hikaru's arm. "No, you can't go back in there. There's too much smoke."
Hikaru had to fight back instinct and said, "You're right, there is too much smoke. Let's go." He climbed onto the fire escape, and the two men made their way down to the street. Hunger pulled at Hikaru as they passed the floor where the fire raged.
Once at street level, Hikaru helped his neighbor over to some of the emergency workers. "Sumimasen," he called out. "Excuse me, can you help us?"
An EMT looked up. "Sure," she said, "come on over. What happened?"
"We're from the third floor. I'm all right, but Mr. Jones breathed in some smoke." He helped the neighbor over to the EMT.
"Thanks, Nakamura, I think I'll be all right now," Mr. Jones said as the EMT started to check him over.
Hikaru smiled and turned away. He looked toward the building where the fire blazed through the second floor. The hunger was becoming unbearable. He needed to feed.
It was easy for Hikaru to slip around to the side of the building as everyone's attention was on the firefighters at the front of the building. He snuck back up to his apartment and changed into his hakama and his demon form. He flew out the window and around to the back of the building. He quickly found a window to the blaze on the second floor and entered. Within minutes, he dhad drawn the fire within and consumed it. An odd thought crossed his mind, "Hmm...tastes like chicken..."
