Tokyopop, a leading publisher of manga in the United States, will be putting some of its license into the palms of mobile video game players with its recent partnership with Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.

The joint forces are looking to start working together on a project that will bring the manga East Coast Rising to video game form. The manga is based on a tale of pirates and high seas adventure where players will defend New York from New Jersey pirates and monsters. While players visit various destroyed and flooded east coast cities, the battle modes will allow them to earn gold to buy repairs for their ships and supplies for the crews.

“Transforming a hot manga property like East Coast Rising into a mobile game demonstrates the kind of synergy that's now possible between traditional forms of entertainment and mobile content,” commented Joe Morris, vice president for mobile content, Konami Digital Entertainment.

“We are very excited to be partnering with Konami to move Tokyopop's creative juice into the white-hot area of mobile gaming. Our two brands both stand for an east-meets-west aesthetic that really speaks out to fans worldwide, so working together is a natural fit that will truly push the envelope," said Stu Levy, CEO of Tokyopop.

While the game will initially feature several difficulty settings, more playable levels are planned to be available for download. East Coast Rising is scheduled to be available in early fall.
