Loveless Fanfic

Charmed

Soubi tapped a pencil absently on his textbook as he sat in the floor by Ritsuka's bed. On the bed, Ritsuka had fallen asleep on his stomach, arms crossed under his chin, leaving Soubi with only a boring history of Japanese art to occupy himself.
Soubi brought his mind back once again (it was insistently returning to Ritsuka, much like a puppy stubbornly following its owner) to notable painters of the area, whose works all looked vaguely similar to one another. Here was one who had painted a lovely, but still boring, yellow tulip. Another who, for variety, had painted a yellow iris. Was there even such a thing as a yellow iris? Soubi wondered. He shrugged mentally and continued flipping pages in his book. Here was one with smooth, glossy leaves. Another with sharp thorns. Another with a stem that curved like a tail…
Soubi glanced up at the bed. Ritsuka's tail was curled to his side, the end flicking occasionally. Closing his book, Soubi folded his legs under him and placed his elbows on the edge of the bed, watching Ritsuka's tail.
The tail flipped restlessly. It moved as if it were bored as well. Not much a tail can do when it's owner is napping, Soubi supposed. He smiled suddenly. If both of them were bored, maybe they could entertain each other.
Careful not to wake Ritsuka, Soubi caught the tail around the middle. The tail twitched, seemingly irritated. He twirled it between his fingers, like one might twirl a lock of hair. It twitched away from him. Soubi caught it again and held it loosely between his thumb and forefinger, waving it through the air slightly. He smiled a bit. The tail flicked. He swished the tail a bit more, this time humming a song reminiscent of snake charmers in India. The tail flicked in time to the tune.
Soubi stifled a chuckle.
“Soubi?” a voice near the foot of the bed said in a low, dangerous voice, “What are you doing with my tail?”
“Charming it,” Soubi answered as he glanced up at Ritsuka, who was looking back at him. His ears were flat and his frown clearly said that he did not appreciate Soubi amusing himself with Ritsuka's tail.
“Don't you have somewhere to be?” Ritsuka asked. Soubi sighed and released the tail. It flattened itself against Ritsuka's side.
“I'll see you after school tomorrow. I love you, Ritsuka,” Soubi said as he climbed out the window.
“How many times do I need to tell you-“ Ritsuka started before deciding it would be pointless anyway. He looked down at his textbook. He hadn't studied all afternoon.
As he glanced over his English vocabulary words, he didn't notice himself humming a familiar snake-charming tune.
