Finding culture in the oddest of places
Two friends of mine have decided to convert to Islam very recently. This sudden unexpected occurrence has brought up the old war inside of me, and oddly enough, has made the Muslims on campus stand out.
Aleia: We have Muslims on campus? O.o
Someone else: Yeah, they started this semester. All of them are obviously Arab, and two or three of them live in your building, no less.
Aleia: Huh. I wonder where I was, during all of this.
I mean, I think there is only one girl that’s Muslim, and she’s really obvious, cause she wears the hajab, the scarf. Plus she doesn’t speak English that well and wears perfume or something that is extremely familiar to me, in the sense that it’s something my conservative aunt has had since I was little, and has told me that it came from Saudi Arabia (She did, by the way. The girl at school, she came from Saudi Arabia.)
I've found a part of me at a hookah bar. Granted, the hookah bar/cafe is run by people in their early 20's... people around my age, so yeah. They were raised in the same culture that I was raised in, but became more Americanized, because they were also raised in America, and were exposed to it.
And that story in itself is a tad complicated. =X
Eh. Technically, I should be showering to go to work, and so I will fill in with a better update later.
Last night and today have so far been full of really unexpected but pleasant surprises. *smiles* ^_^
I’ve surmised that this birthday is going to last a few days, whether I want it to or not. *grins and shakes head*
