Chapter I

The night’s rain was relentless. Drenching the small town of Misar it was. All who walked the broad streets held umbrellas that let the accursed water roll off its dome-like shape. Carriages pulled by the glossiest black horses one could imagine rode careless in the streets as if they had not known the concept of rushing. The tall buildings engraved at their trunk with shops, appeared to be sobbing as the rain poured off of them onto the sidewalks into the alleyways.

“…ungh… I’m thirsty.” A man whom trod along the alleys began to lick his famished lips as he mumbled to himself. This individual held no umbrella, for he had no fear from the water’s touch like the humans did. The black tattered robe he wore completely shielded his body from the rain that pounded on the ground which he walked. His hood shrouded his face in darkness- the way he preferred it to. The wind began to pick up against him, extending his robe far beyond his back.

After a short while, he approached a 3-way intersection in the alley. He paused and peered into the passage on his left. The scarce amount of lamps shed little light on what lie ahead. He noticed it was cluttered with garbage and puddles. “Hobos could be found in that direction as well as a few mice.”, he reminded himself. This fact intrigued him.

Curiosity compelled him to turn his head to the other path which was well lit. It was free of garbage and puddles. A few traces of litter here and there but nothing much. It seemed to him that this trail was taken often. It occurred to be a shortcut used by the underclass or children more so than sensible people. He looked at the passage with the other in mind. Suddenly, he felt a sensation inside his mouth. His nose was very keen and would trigger this sensation upon the scent of something worthy. He caught the scent of a very strong perfume riding the current towards him. He unconsciously made his way down the alleyway on his right.

After drifting slowly for a while, he began to doubt his abilities to sense his prey. He began to think of the other passage- how he would be feasting by now on some hobo’s neck. This was cast aside when he noticed a silhouette in the distance. His eyes began to fix themselves on the figure as it came closer. The figure eventually appeared to be a well developed young businesswoman. She walked in such a seductive manner with her umbrella resting against her shoulder as she busied herself with her purse. The dark man instantly noticed the woman was not what she appeared to be. The way she walked, her attire, the perfume used to cover the unwanted scent of sexual activities and the alley she chose to walk down. She was obviously a prostitute. An outcast. Nobody would miss her, he thought to himself. Killing a person of high ranking would draw a lot of attention to superstition and vampires. Something he did not want. The one before him surely would not arouse such hype.

The sensation in his mouth grew stronger. Continuing to walk further into the alley towards the woman who was completely oblivious to his presence, his left eye began to glow a devilish red- symbolizing an increase in his power. A dark aura of shadows emitted from underneath his robe in various swirls, entangling each other slowly as he gradually closed the distance between him and his prey. Suddenly, the girl looked up startled! She felt she wasn’t alone. But the fact that she saw nothing for as long as her eyes could carry her, she withdrew into a calm oblivious state, digging into her purse for makeup.

A violent wind arose in the opposite direction in which she walked, taking her umbrella high in to the air behind her. Instincts turned her around to view the happening- only to be greeted by a glowing red eye that towered over her in complete darkness. She was completely paralyzed with fear. Whatever voice she had was long gone. The dark man wasted no time placing his inhuman hands on her unsteady shoulders and his fangs in the flesh of her long slender neck. Her body became limp in a matter of seconds. The vampire held her in place, greedily feeding from her unfortunate body.

When he finished, he did not leave her body to rot in the alley. He knew this would also draw attention to the vampires. They were long forgotten myth in this village and he would like to keep it that way for it made prey easier to obtain. He held the girl in place with one hand and unzipped his tattered robe with the other. A strange darkness crept from his hood as he did so. The robe was opened from the neck down to the knees, revealing shadows and endless hell seemingly going on forever in a spiraling abyss. The vampire pulled the girl’s empty vessel, letting it drop into his. Meanwhile, he kept his nose sharp for witnesses. The girl was no longer in this realm, but one of hate and despair. A realm of eternal pain…. His realm.

The vampire turned around and continued down the alley with a satisfied state of mind. But he couldn’t help feeling a pair of eyes on his back. An uneasy sensation crept along his spine. He stopped to survey his surroundings but was disappointed to have found nothing within his eyesight’s range. The rain wasn’t cooperating with his nose either. Catching the scent of someone skillfully hiding would be hard indeed. He knew this well. The weather was drastically decreasing his chances of locating a potential follower if there was one. The vampire turned back in the direction he was going as these thoughts raced though his complex mind…

Atop the tall buildings, that gave birth to the alleys the vampire walked, stood the individual the vampire sought. His black trench coat danced on the rushing currents, exposing his leather tunic and dark jeans that allowed for stakes to be carried in the side pockets. He stood firm with his legs separated as the wind pushed against his long slender body. Arms crossed, he spoke aloud as if he were speaking to the vampire whom he saw down below.

“…..Feeding off such feeble prey… Covering your tracks in fear of the humans… Portraying yourself as a reaper… You have indeed lost much of the pride you once had.”

He chuckled to himself. “’…And the higher the risk, the greater the reward‘, he said…” Just as he finished those words, he burst into dust and shadows, disappearing into the storming night sky.
