Edward Elric Known as the Fullmetal Alchemist, Ed is the youngest State Alchemist ever. His "second name", given to him upon passing the State Alchemist certification, refers to his automail, the artificial arm and leg that replaced the limbs Ed lost during the Elric brothers' attempts to revive his mother (his left leg) and gain the knowledge to attach Al's soul into a suit of armor (his right arm). Ed is the older brother, but somewhat lacking in height. Ed is very self conscious about his height, frequently throwing fits when his size is compared to those around him or to those older than him. He is a very powerful alchemist, even more so than he realizes. He can use alchemy without the use of a transmutation circle, unlike most alchemists, by clapping his hands together forming a circle with his arms. He gained that ability, along with the knowledge of how to perform a soul attachment, when he traded his arm for the knowledge at the gate during the attempted revival of his mother. Ed knew that alchemy without circles was possible from observing his teacher Izumi Curtis. He hid this ability at first, but displayed it when he needed to turn ice cold water into hot water to place a warm towel on a pregnant Gracia Hughes to help comfort her when she was going into labor and when an alchemists life was endangered during the state alchemist exam. Throughout his adventure, he saw the dark aspects of human nature and tried to act tough as a defense to it. When fighting the Homunculi, Ed came into direct physical contact with a large amount of unrefined Philsopher's stone material in liquid form and red water. This amplified his alchemy to almost "God-Like" levels. He is killed by Envy, only to be revived by Al at the cost of his life. He then decides to revive Al using himself as a sacrifice. Al was brought back to Amestris in his original body, but Edward was unintentionally taken to the 'other side' of the gate, which is supposed to be our world. Ed lives in post WWI Germany with his father, now traveling to Romania to find a means to go back to Amestris with hopes to see Al and the rest of his friends again someday. But as Edward tries to fit in his new reality, he tries not to interact as best as he could while dealing with the Thule Society and Envy. After stopping the Thule, Edward was finally reunited with Al in the Other World. Accepting his new reality, he and Al travel once again. In the manga, Ed goes home to Rizembol to find Hohenheim, his father, standing at his mother's grave. After a brief argument, Hohenheim and Ed walk to Pinako's with Ed being more than belligerant towards his father. When his father and Pinako talk, he over hears something that makes him go out into the graveyard and dig up Trisha Elric's body. He starts throwing up and has to take several breaks while digging, but eventually pulls up a lock of hair; black hair instead of brown. Even the bones aren't the same length as Trisha's were, which Pinako is the one that points that out. In a sense, they didn't even bring back their mother, but made something entirely different. Ed goes to central to find Al is missing his lower "jaw" and his right arm of his suit of armor. AFter Ed repairs Al, he finds out Al had a run in with Barrie the (hyper active and rather hillarious) chopper and the homunculi, but also finds out Al's soul is rejecting the body he resides in now. Then, he proceeds to, in a very teenagerish fashion, attempt to ask Winry about the incident involving both brothers asking Winry to marry them when they were around five. She confirms and he asks her why she rejected the both of them. "Because I don't like guys shorter than me" is what she says, causing Ed to go into a fiercer rant of calling her a "demon" and "Don't judge a man's worth by his hieght." Then, he tells them, after winry asks why he's even asking about the incident when they were five, that he is confirming the memories Al has that Ed DOESN'T have. Al and Winry allude to a moment when Ed was unconcious and fighting a fever after surgery when Winry walked in on Al, who was "resting", and they talk. Only, when Al and Winry allude to the conversation, it sounds almost like they did something OTHER than talk, causing Ed to look ncredibly depressed and plead for them to stop talking. When they get back to the conversation at hand, Ed theorizes that Al's body is with Truth inside the gate and that it's still alive and possibly connected through Ed and Al's blood to Ed. (That he is sleeping for the both of them, eating, whatever, for the both of them)Al's brain is still alive inside a body that's still alive and is what is collecting the memories since Ed transferred Al's soul to the suit of armor. Ed and Al eventually figure the only way they're going to catch a homunculus is to let Scar attack them, which the first part of doing that is attracting Scar's attention. Ed does a series of do-gooding around town and eventually gets Scar's attention on him. A fight between Scar, Ed and Al ensues, with Mustang and Hawkeye diverting attention from them by redirecting the military vehicles to different places away from where the real fight is happening. Winry goes looking for them and ends up overhearing Ed say Scar killed Winry's parents. She picks up the gun from an officer that dropped and points it at scar, only to have Ed jump in front of her and tell her to drop the gun while Scar decends on him from the front. Al lures Scar away from the two and Ed gently pries Winry's hands from the gun while telling her that her hands "Are not those that kill people. They're hands that let people live." After that, when Lin ties up Gluttony and Winry is going to Rush valley once more, Ed yells a promise to her that when she sees them next he will "make her cry tears of joy". At this point, it's rather obvious Ed is in love with Winry, but he doesn't know if Winry feels the same way or not (although the manga gives strong hints that she does). The point becomes rather moot, however, when Gluttony escapes his bonds and tries to suck up Roy and everyone else into his "gate" for a stomach. He ends up sucking up Envy, Lin and Ed, instead, and Al's left hand. Lin and Ed find Envy enventually and Envy actually tries to be nice to Ed, however, it all backfires and Envy turns into his natural form, leaving Ed and Lin to really want to run someplace safe and hide. This information is up to date as of Chapter 51 October 2005. · chapter 52: Inside Gluttonys stomach, the tortured souls in Envy's natural form cause Ed to have a semi-nervous breakdown (he cannot bear to hurt them and flashes back to Nina for an instant). Envy then swallows him (poor guy, swallowed twice in a day). However, after seeing the red stone that is Envys center, he kicks out one of Envys teeth and tells Envy and Ling that he knows a way that they can escape from Gluttonys stomach. [edit] Alphonse Elric Alphonse is the younger brother, but is often confused to be older than Ed because he is trapped in a suit of armor twice as large as he is. As a result of Al's suit of armor, most people who meet Alphonse automatically assume that he is the Fullmetal Alchemist. When Ed and Al tried to revive their mother, Al's body was taken to the 'other side' and Ed had to save him by giving up his arm to bind his brother's soul to a nearby suit of armor. Because of this, Al is unable to feel, smell, or taste anything anymore (he actually doesn't even eat or sleep), but he can apparently see and hear. He's an alchemist as well, but not nearly as powerful as his brother is. Before burning the Elric home, the Elric brothers painted the symbol of a winged snake on a cross on Ed's armor. The symbol was inherited from their teacher and from the teacher of their teacher Dante. Al's personality usually acts as a foil for Ed's. But during his fight with Barry, Al was troubled by the fact that he could be a fabrication and may not have truly existed, as he was unable to remember most things from when he was human and Edward was not telling him something. As a result, Al left to find the truth for himself. But by helping Scar deal with mercanies and Barry, Al came to terms with this fear of being false and rejoined his brother in their searching. Later, Scar transferred all of his incomplete Philosopher's Stone into Al to save his life. As a result, Al became the host of the Philosopher's Stone, as well as a target for Dante, her Homunculi, and Shou Tucker. In the end, Al used the stone's power to resurrect Ed after Envy killed him. But it destroyed him in the process. Ed, in turn, resurrected Al by using himself in a transmutation. Al came back in his original 10 year-old body with no memory of his adventures since that night they tried to revive their mother. He was last seen under Izumi's teaching once again, and wants to study alchemy so that he may see Ed again someday.After this, he wears an attire similar to Ed, equipped with gloves that have transmutation circles on both of them so he can merely clap his hands together to activate his Alchemy. He arrived in Central during the Thule Society's attack. He stopped the attack by transmuting a part of his soul into the suits of armors. In the end, Al transmuted himself completely to the Other World, with his memory restored as he and Ed wander the world they call their new home. In the Manga, Al develops the ability to perform alchemy without a transmutation circle, the same as Ed can. When King Bradley impaled Martel while she was inside Al's armored body, her blood spilled onto his blood seal. This gave him a near-death experience, recalling to his mind his experience at the Gate of Alchemy. He realized that he could transmute without a transmutation circle shortly thereafter. It is also believed that his body is lying somewhere, as in the example of Barry the Chopper. Also in the manga, Alphonse is afraid that his armor will eventually reject his soul, which would mean his death. [edit] Winry Rockbell Ed and Al's childhood friend. She's a self-professed "gearhead" who helped her grandmother Pinako build Ed's "automail", machine limbs. She occasionally travels with the Elric Brothers to maintain Ed's artificial leg and arm. Her parents were doctors who were killed during the Ishbal War by Roy Mustang under Basque Grand's orders; they treated the enemy as well as Amestris soldiers. She helped out when the Thules attacked. But in the end, she begins doing her own Automail research, no longer worrying about the Elrics like she usually does as she's sure they're all right. (In the manga version, Scar was the man that killed Winry's parents, not Mustang.) In the manga, where the plot diverges from the anime considerably, she goes with Ed and Al to Rush Valley where she takes an apprenticeship with a rather odd man who creeps out the young male visitors to the shop. She spends most of her time there until Ed goes through Rush Valley once more and sees her there. In the manga, she tries to shoot Scar, but Ed stops her and Al leads Scar away from the two of them. In the newer chapters, Winry finally realizes she's in love with Ed. [edit] Rosé Thomas Rosé is from the city of Lior in a remote region of the East. She was one of devout followers of Cornello's teachings because she felt that he would use his powers to bring her boyfriend, Kain, back to life. However, she is shocked when all Cornello is able to produce is a talking parrot chimera, which was going to eat her before Al intervened. With her hope shattered, Rosé was forced to start over and persevere through hard times when the military invaded Lior. Imprisoned by the military, Rosé was raped repeatedly until she lost her voice. She endured this abuse for some time and when she finally escaped, she was pregnant. Thanks to Scar, she became the symbol of hope for the people of Lior and with help from Edward, got her voice back. She became targeted as Dante's next vessel with the new Philosopher's Stone. Early material had written her name with no French accent, but the BONES staffer who helped develop the Roman character spellings of the major characters has stated it should have. (Many fonts in Japan that were developed before Unicode was widely adopted do not include Roman accented characters.) Due to the different story arc of the manga, Rose has not made another appearence after what happened with Cornello so far except where she yells at an officer that they can stand on their own feet and walk forward. Other than that, however, she's no where to be seen. [edit] Scar One of the surviving Ishbalans, a people who reject alchemy as an offense to the natural gifts their god gave them. His real name is unknown, so he's called Scar due to the X-Shaped scar on his forehead (thanks to Kimblee). At the time of his introducution in the anime, Scar was in Central attempting to learn the nature of the strange markings on his right arm (actually his brother's arm), and first met Edward while attempting to gain access to the State Library. He learns about the power in his arm after killing Nina and afterward sets out on a crusade of sorts to assassinate all of the State Alchemists for the cruelty against his people. The fact that he killed Nina to end her "pain" as a chimera made him Ed's mortal enemy and Ed's being a State Alchemist makes him Scar's mortal enemy. Scar's relationship with the Elric brothers seemed to change upon each meeting depending on the circumstances. His right arm is tattooed with a transmutation circle that allows him to destroy objects at will, by performing only the first two steps of a transmutation (Understanding and Decomposing). He received the arm from his older brother to replace the one taken from him by Kimblee and to save him from death. In truth the arm is actually an incomplete Philosopher's Stone itself, created from the transmutation of countless Ishbalans who died in the war; it gives Scar pain every time it absorbs another incomplete Philosopher's Stone (soul). Scar later transferred it into Al to save him from Kimblee's alchemy. He suffered injuries from bullet wounds incurred from shielding Lust, and sacrificed himself in order to peform the giant transmutation circle in the city of Lior that caused Al to become the Philosopher's Stone. In the anime, he was able to transmute the words in Marcoh's note into an orb of energy and was able to decode and understand in a matter of seconds. In the manga, he shares many attributes with the anime version, except that he was one who killed Winry's parents without regret. He was portrayed as more relentless and ruthless in his vengeance while the anime had him as a good man who was consumed by revenge for his people and hatred for those involved. In the recent chapter, Scar was almost caught by the military but Mei Chang, a girl from the country of Xing, saved him and he has gone into hiding. Note that Scar's religion, homeland and culture, for all its allusions to God, is not akin to any form of Christianity, but rather to a Hindu concept known as Ishvara. Note as well that scar's religion, homeland and culture may well be an allusion to Islam. The series often mixes religious concepts quite freely. The Latin words on Scar's arm are: dopo la terra sic ca a ndan, colia The exact ordering of the words can be disputed. Some animation and even some books incorrectly show the second word as "aa" rather than "la". Of the words, "colia" is probably the greek "Kolia" latinized and means "voice of god" which is possibly a religious allusion to the philosophers stone. The word "ndan" may or may not be the bilbical Adam. The word "ca" is a Latin abbreviation of "Circa" The phrase may not seem correct when translated into english because it was created into Latin from Japanese. [edit] Izumi Curtis She is the powerful alchemist who took the eager Elric brothers on as students shortly after their mother's passing. The red tattoo on her chest is the same insignia (known as a flamel) that appears on Edward's coat and the left shoulder of Alphonse's armor. The insignia would seem to be something passed on from teacher to student as Dante, Izumi's Alchemy teacher, also displayed the symbol. The symbol, a winged snake fixed on a cross, is literally the opposite of the Ouroboros worn by the Homunculi. It represents a fixation of the volatile principal in alchemy as opposed to the endless cycle represented by Ouroboros. Izumi is an extremely strong woman, both emotionally and physically: along with her talent for alchemy, Izumi is also an accomplished martial artist. The Elric brothers are taught with her own unique form of sparring combined with philosophy to gain a fuller understanding of alchemy. She is married to Sieg Curtis, a husky and well-built butcher of few words. Like many others in the series, she despises the military and particularly State Alchemists, so when she encounters Edward "Fullmetal Alchemist" Elric again, she scolds (beats) him for his becoming a dog of the military. Like Edward, Izumi is capable of alchemy without a transmutation circle. Izumi gained this attribute from viewing the inside of the mysterious "Gate" while attempting to revive her newborn son with alchemy. This attempt not only created the Homunculus Wrath, but cost Izumi her reproductive system and other internal organs. This causes her to cough up blood at inopportune moments. She passes away between the series' end and Conqueror of Shamballa, only making a cameo as a spirit to receive Wrath when he sacrifices himself to reopen the Gate. [edit] Dante She is the one who originally instructed Izumi Curtis in alchemy. Dante was the Hohenheim's original lover. She had cheated death for centuries by transferring her soul into another body by using the Philosopher's Stone. However, the transfer was imperfect, as Dante lost a bit of her own soul with each transfer and her bodies slowly decayed after a while. She can perform alchemy without a transmutation circle, an ability most likely gained after she created the Homunculi Greed, Pride and possibly Gluttony. She uses the symbol of a winged snake fixed on a cross which is literally the opposite of the Ouroboros worn by the Homunculi. It represents a fixation of the volatile principal in alchemy as opposed to the endless cycle represented by Ouroboros. In Dante's case, the symbol likely represents her belief that she is immortal and has conquered the cycle of birth and death as represented by the Ouroboros. Dante's student Izumi Curtis along with Izumi's students Edward and Alphonse Elric all wear the snake on the cross symbol. Dante is the leader of all the Homunculi and used them to spark wars, so new Philosopher's Stones could be made. She was planning on transferring her soul into Rose's body. Dante was last seen fighting off a crazed Gluttony while making her escape, giving the impression that she is dead. The name Dante is suggested to have come from Dante Alighieri. This character is nonexsistant in the manga version, as the creator of the homonculi has already been shown as a male, and quite possibly Hohenhiem. [edit] Hohenheim of Light The father of Edward and Alphonse Elric. He could perform alchemy without a transmutation circle and was a legend of his time, but Ed has a grudge against him for leaving his mother. By the time he resurfaced to face Dante, he was over 400 years old. At some point in the past, Dante and Hohenheim had a relationship, which resulted in one child. This child died due to mercury poisoning, but was resurrected as a Homunculus: Envy. However, Hohenheim did not love Dante and eventually left her, as he stated that Trisha Elric was the only woman he had ever loved. He created a Philosopher's Stone and, like Dante, used it to transfer his soul into a new body to live indefinitely. But like Dante, Hohenhiem's vessels tend to decay as a side effect; it was the true reason why he left his family in the first place. Upon failing to stop her, Hohenheim's entire being was transported by Dante to the 'other side' of the gate, and ended up in London during WWI. He later saw Edward off on the boy's trip to Romania. But it turned out Hoheniem unknowingly helped the Thules, and as a act of redemption for this and his part in the chaos Dante caused, committed suicide by allowing Envy to eat him. He was named after Paracelsus, a famous historical alchemist. In the manga, he is introduced as 'Van Hohenheim' when he returns to Resembool for a short while. Before leaving, he warned Pinako Rockbell to leave the country as something terrible was going to happen in Amestris. He also bears a strong resemblance to the Homunculi's 'Father', who orders them around. After leaving Risembool, the carriage he is on is held up by bandits, who promptly retreat after shooting Hohenheim multiple times, but with no effect. This may mean Hoheheim is immortal, or has an incomplete philosophers stone. [edit] Alfons Heiderich A 17-year-old boy who bears a resemblance to Alphonse Elric and befriends Edward in the movie, although he feels a bit annoyed when Ed treats him like his little brother. He's studying under the father of modern rocketry, and wants to prove the scientific worth of his fellow Germans by achieving a rocket that can actually be ridden, thus leaving his mark in the world, because he suffers from a disease that makes him cough blood (possibly Tuberculosis), and he knows he doesn't have much time left to live. To acomplish his ideal, he joins the Thule Society in their plan, but is killed by Rudolf Hess when he used one of his rockets to sneak Edward into the portal to his homeworld. [edit] Noah A Roma girl whom Ed befriends in the Conqueror of Shamballa movie after saving her from an attack by the Thule Society. She "extricates" various memories from Ed that give her knowledge of alchemy and his world. She later joins the Thule Society for the sake of escaping the persecution of her people by fleeing to Shamballa. But she realized what she did was wrong and helped stop the Thules. In the end, she joined the Elric brothers on their new journey in Europe. [edit] Dietlinde Eckart The villain of the film, she occupies an important position as an occultist in the Thule Society. After obtaining information regarding Shambala, and the mysterious powers of alchemy, Dietlinde, with the help of other colaborators, elaborated a plan to open the Gate so take the other world over as to help the Nazis in their plan to overthrown German government. Using Envy, Hoenheim and Alphonse, she animated a army of armored suits(some of them are identical to Al's armored body) and had them fly to through the gates to Central City. But her plans were foiled at the hands of the Elric brothers in the end when her own creations were turned on her. She apparently was related to Dietrich Eckart, who was a key member of the Thule Society.
