Destiny Hearts
Eureka held tightly to her backpack as she entered Saint George Academy. Since her parents had moved from Chicago, Eureka felt very insecure for losing all of her friends there. “Don’t worry;” said her father, “I’m sure you’ll make lots of friends here.” Eureka knew it would be hard to make friends with the new kid.
She heard the bell ring the first time and she shifted into an anxious jog. As she walked up to the school, she saw a tall girl leaning on a tree. She snickered as Eureka passed her, Eureka feeling a wave of panic sweep over her. She passed the last tree, and was just about to make it to the steps, when she was stopped by the tall girl. “Hey. Who are you?” Eureka shifted her backpack to her other shoulder with her sweaty palm. “I’m Eureka.” She muttered. “Eureka?!” the tall girl shrieked, “What kind of name is that? It sounds like that light bulb place!” She swayed around Eureka. “You must be the new girl. I’ve heard of you…” She suddenly stopped and turned on her heel to face Eureka. “Ah, where are my manners? I’m Claire, the most popular, prettiest, and smartest girl in this school.” She leaned closer to her. “And don’t you forget it, got it?” Eureka nodded out of pure terror. Claire straightened up and threw on a fake girly smile. “Well, I’m glad to have met you.” And with that, she flipped her hair and slowly strutted away. Eureka was stunned. Well, she thought, at least I know the first person on my enemy list. Oh great, she sighed, I already have an enemy, and not one friend to back me up! She slouched a little, and with her backpack, she walked up the stairs. As she headed for her locker, she saw a tall girl with long brown hair. Eureka knew that she had to make friends eventually, so why not now? She gathered up all the courage and walked over to the girl, who was now selecting a book from her locker. “H--,” the girl spun around, surprised to hear someone. “Hi! I’m Lochelle. You must be the new girl, Eureka, right?” Eureka smiled. “Yeah, that’s me. How did you know?” Lochelle gave her a grin, and scratched her head. “Ya know, I kinda guessed…” Eureka looked at her puzzled. “But-,” Again Lochelle spoke. “I know your name starts with an E, because of the E on your backpack. There’s a U on your bracelet, and I heard of that girl whose name sounds like the light bulb place down the street.” Eureka sighed. “Great, I’m getting a reputation as the girl like the light bulb place.” Lochelle frowned. “Oh no! I didn’t mean it like that!” She paused for a minute, leading in a disturbing silence. Eureka, knowing that if she wanted Lochelle as a friend, had to say something fast or she would lose her attention. “So, can you help me get to my first period?” Lochelle grinned again. “Yeah! What is it?” She snatched the schedule out of Eureka’s hand and read it. “Oh! You’ve got Mrs. Lattivi, just like me!” Before Eureka could say anything, Lochelle grabbed her wrist and led her to her locker. “Hurry up and get your stuff.” She said.
