Deep Wounds: An Inuyasha & Kagome Story
*episode 5*

In the evening, Sota and Kagome are in their rooms, and Kagome’s Grandfather is out tending the shrine. Her mother is cooking and Inuyasha is helping. He’s not a very promising chef, but he can chop vegetables and he seems to have been looking for ways to help this woman these last few days.
He mutters to himself, “This is boring.” She tells him, “Yes, but the others are going to be hungry. It’s part of living with other people.” “Living with people?” he asks as if on cue. “There’s more to life then just the exciting things.” she says. “Most of life is just getting by, day to day. You have to learn to take joy from being with the people you love. Real love doesn’t happen in an instant. It’s caring for someone in such a way that you feel happy just because you are with them and feeling that way almost all the time. Now keep your eyes on that knife.”

That night, on the roof top, Inuyasha reclines and Kagome sits beside him. Inuyasha seem distracted, and Kagome lets him be. Finally, he says, “Hey Kagome, I’ve been thinking.” “About what?” she asks. After a pause he says, “Kikyo.” “Oh.” she says dejectedly. He asks, “You know how I said I was going to go with Kikyo after I defeat Naraku?” She nods solemnly. There is a tense moment, “I…I’m…I…” then he blurts out, “I’m having second thoughts.” He blushes and looks away from her astonished face. “I don’t want to leave Kikyo alone, and I want to be with her, but…” he says, “…I’m having a good time. It’s not the fighting or the adventure or any of that stuff. It’s………you.” Kagome has turned six shades of red and Inuyasha can’t meet her eyes. “When I was with Kikyo I felt in love.” he says. “But when I’m with you I feel something I’ve never felt before. I feel happy.” He sits up and turns away from her. Then he hears her voice, “Inu…yasha?” She rests her forehead on his shoulder. “Thank you.” she says. “But Inuyasha, lets not worry about that now. Let’s figure it out some other time, for now, let’s just stay here, together. Tomorrow is a long way off, let’s worry about it then. I know that one day you’ll have to choose between me and her, and I can accept that. I can even accept your choice, whatever it is. But please, in case you do leave, let me have tonight, sitting here, being with you. Let me have that memory.” “Memories…” he says. He nods his head.
They stay like that for hours. Until Kagome’s breathing changes and Inuyasha carries the sleeping girl to her bed, and sits beside her until dawn.
