The Price You Pay: Cost of Blood
*episode 5*

The group is gathered in Kaede’s home. Inuyasha and Shippo are eating. The old priestess is tending to the unconscious monk. Sango is sitting, softly crying, and Kagome is comforting her. The curtain is pulled aside, revealing Kohaku and Kirara. The demon comes in first; she goes to her friend and gives an apologetic look. Brother and sister stand facing each other. Sango moves first and wraps her arms around him. After they have sat down, Inuyasha asks, “So Kohaku, did he want my sword or my head. I don’t think he’d be ready to settle for humiliating me again.” Kagome says, “I had my money on him doing it out of the goodness of his heart. I know it’s a long-shot, but it could happen.” Sango says, wiping the tears from her eyes, “I was sure that he would want your life.” “What makes you say that?” Inuyasha asks. Kagome says, “Sesshomaru is ruthless, but not to that extent. After all, he just helped bring Kohaku back.” Sango says, “When Kagura and I went to see him, he asked her to be his mate. In the same breath, she told him that his offer did not interest her, and that saving Kohaku did. I thought that he would feel rejected and seek vengeance.” “He didn’t ask for any of those.” Kohaku says. “He wanted something I couldn’t give him.” The others look at him expectantly. He looks at his sister and says, “He wanted me to rip your heart from your chest and bring it to him. I wanted to save her, but that was one thing I couldn’t do.” Sango embraces him again. He wipes his eyes and says, “I dug a grave, but I couldn’t consecrate it. I was hoping to get the monk, but I see that he isn’t going to be of much help. I don’t want to leave her body overnight. Kagome, you are a priestess. Could you come with me and give rites?” “Me?” Kagome says. “I’m not sure I’m the one you want.” Kaede says, “Nonsense child. Ye are certainly qualified to lay a body to rest. Ye must simply pray over it.” “Ok.” Kagome says. Sango says, “Let’s go.” “No.” Kohaku interjects. “I want to do this alone, but I need a holy person. Please sister, just the two of us.” Sango shares a long look with Kagome. Kagome nods. Kohaku, Kagome and Kirara walk out of the house together.
