Dancing In The Dark: Meridian
*episode 3*

Kaede has returned to Kagome and begun the rituals to cast off the sacred magic. Kagome has already done the bulk of the work herself and, with help from the old priestess, she should wake up sometime in the morning. Inuyasha enters the house and sits against a wall. Kaede is focused on her task, but she can clearly tell that the half-demon is agitated, even angry. Having done what she can, Kaede turns to him, “Inuyasha, ye hold yourself accountable for Kagome’s injuries.” Inuyasha says, “No…I mean yes, it’s my fault but…I…it’s not that, it’s…ah just forget it.” Kaede says, “This tired old eye can see that thy anger is directed at thyself and not thine enemies. If not for allowing her to come to harm, why do ye condemn thyself.” Inuyasha looks away and says nothing. Kaede says, “If ye think to conceal thy emotions from thyself, continue as ye are. But I, ye cannot fool so easily. Speak what is in thy heart; I swear that none shall know.” Inuyasha looks everywhere in the room except the old priestess. Finally, he looks at her. He closes his eyes and leans his head back. “It was the same.” he says. “50 years ago, Naraku disguised himself as Kikyo and attacked me; and I fell for it. I never stop to think that it might not’a been her who attacked me. I had no faith in her. Today, Naraku used the same trick. I believed that it was Kagome who was killin me. Kagome trusts me all the time, and I don’t even trust her enough to know that it couldn’t be her.” Kaede says, “Ye knew only what ye saw. There is no crime in trusting thy senses. Aside from that, thy life has hardly been one to inspire great leaps of faith. Kagome will not feel betrayed by thy actions, so why do ye feel ye have betrayed her?” Inuyasha says, “That ain’t the point. I ain’t learned a thing from all Naraku’s tricks. I’m still dumb enough to let him turn me against Kagome.” Seeing that Inuyasha will not listen to reason, Kaede decides to let him be. Without further discussion, she prepares for bed. It being warm, she does not replenish the fire; it dies soon after.
