Mesuinu: a tale of Inuyasha
*episode 14*
Inuyasha and Mesu have been running for 3 days straight; further and further into the west. At last, they are forced to stop. Inuyasha must have at least a few hours of sleep or he won’t be able to run. He is sleeping now, hidden inside a small cave. Mesu is sitting just inside keeping an eye out. They have both been able to sense the looming demonic auras closing in on them; familiar to her, but not to him. One in particular is leading the pack; out pacing all the rest, typical. Mesu knows what this means; and knows who it is she’ll be meeting any minute. Of all the members of her family, except maybe her, he’s the one she would call the wild card. She gave up trying to predict his behavior a long time ago; but they never had a chance of outrunning him, so maybe it’s best that they get this over with. Mesu stands and steps out of the cave. She hears a voice from behind her, “So, little sis, here we are.” She looks over her shoulder and sees a man standing in the entrance of the cave. He is tall, clad in white linen and armor, and he bares an emblem of a forked line on his forehead. Mesu turns to him and says, “Ryuumaru; leading the pack as always.” He says, “Now sis, is that any way to talk to your big brother?” Mesu says, “That depends on weather or not you’re here for father.” Ryuumaru says, “Which in turn depends on what all this fuss is about.” He turns and walks into the cave. He discovers Inuyasha by stepping on him; Inuyasha responds by snoring. Ryuumaru says, “This is what has father so riled up?” He prods Inuyasha with his foot again and still the boy sleeps. Mesu says, “He kept going as long as he could; if he was human he’d be dead now.” Ryuumaru says, “If he was human, we wouldn’t be chasseing you. Father trusts you to not get involved with a mortal; but this fellow has him worried. Is he worth all the trouble he’s getting you into? Do you love him?” Mesu asks, “Does it matter? Father is going to kill him no matter how I feel about him. That is, if I let him. So we’re back to, are you here for father?” Ryuumaru stares at Inuyasha for several seconds; then he puts his hand on Mesu’s cheek. “No,” he says, “I’m going home. I’ll let father and the others deal with this on their own. But remember little sis, the others won’t hesitate to do exactly what he tells them.” With that, he strolls out of the cave. He looks back; and then moves off faster than the eye can see.
