Mesuinu: a tale of Inuyasha
*episode 17*

Inuyasha and Mesu have been running for several hours since the attack of the twins. In that time, the demonic auras have not moved toward them; or at all as far as they can tell. As the sun sets, Mesu stops. She turns to Inuyasha and he turns to her. The both say in sync, “We should stop now.” This brings slight smiles to both their faces. Mesu says, “You go first.” Inuyasha says, “No, you.” Mesu says, “My father won’t come after us until midday tomorrow. He sent the twins to test us. Next he’ll tend his wounds, regroup, and launch a fresh offensive in the morning. He’s a methodical bastered. So is Yaibamaru. What were you going to say?” Inuyasha says, “I’ve been trying to figure out how to tell you this; I can’t move tonight. You see, there won’t be a moon tonight.” Mesu says, “What’s that have to do with us moving?” He turns and paces in indecision; finally he says, “This has to stay secret; nobody knows. You see, every month, on the night of the new moon, I stop bein a half-demon. If your father caught up to us tonight, he’d find you and a mortal.” She says, “You tell me now?!?” He says, “I wasn’t sure if I should tell you; I’m still not. If anyone ever found out…” She says, “I get the picture. So it’s a good thing that we have the night off.” Inuyasha builds a fire and they sit down together in the light of the setting sun. Eventually, Inuyasha says, “So how many brothers do ya have anyway?” She says, “4; broke my father heart the day I turned out not to be number 5. You’ve met the stupid twins. Then there’s Ryuumaru; I don’t think we’ll have to worry about him.” Inuyasha says, “Why not?” She says, “Just trust me, he’s not here. That leaves the oldest of our brood, father’s heir and favorite; Yaibamaru. He’s dangerous; like his father. They will come after us tomorrow; and the Iron Reaver won’t work on them.” Inuyasha nods; he turns to the west and watches as the sun disappears. Mesu’s eyes aren’t on the sunset; she watches her companion as he transforms. He turns to her with trusting; but questioning purple eyes. She says, “I must say, I miss the ears; but this is fine too; if it’s only for one night. Now human or not; you need to sleep. We have to set out at dawn tomorrow.” Inuyasha nods and lies back. He says, “Mesu, I want you to hear something I’ve been thinking about. It’s just an idea; not a proposal or anything. I’m half-demon; that means I’m weak, I know that. But if I had kids with a full-blooded demon, they’d more demon than me. They might not turn into a mortal like this; or at least not as often. They’d be easier for demons to accept; they might not even be noticed as not being demons. I mean, I know it wouldn’t be easy for…the demon; but I thought that…I mean…umm…” Mesu says, “Inuyasha, go to sleep. We can talk about this some other time.” Inuyasha nods and lies down. With in minutes he is sleeping; but Mesu remains awake for quite some time.
