Chronicles of Endaria, Chapter One - Part II
Route panicked. How could this be happening? The indestructible Tower of Kleydos had crumbled? How could a simple lightning be so strong as to make the Tower's structure cave in that way? All he knew was that it had been no ordinary lightning.
His first reaction was of fear. Fear or what might happen to him and the population of Endaria, if that their only power source had vanished. But, when he realized there was nothing to do but to summon a court. He was sure that together, the High Priests could certainly find a solution.
Route struggled to put on his vests. His body was shaking, which made it harder to get dressed. His blood was pumping up to his brain and down again with extraordinary speed and he tried hard to catch his breath. And then he remembered: Aeria. The Tower of Kleydos and the safeguarding of Endaria were everything to her, even though her brother controlled the realm. He couldn't possibly imagine the kind of grief she could be going through at the moment, but Aeria never was one to show her sadness. Route guessed that it was her personality, her simple way of being, that prevented her from showing her feelings. But Route also knew that Aeria didn't suffer easily, and that the only thing that could weaken her heart at the point of shedding tears was the fall of the Tower of Kleydos.
Route was, indeed, fearful. His mind told him to go to the throne room and see Aeryon… but his heart told him to run as fast as he could and make sure his master was alright. He was experiencing what Aeria called "inner turmoil". A tornado of emotions clashing with thoughts, creating endless wills, desires and duties, was preventing him from thinking properly and making the right choice. He was already in the middle of the corridor, concentrating to decide which direction to follow, when he felt someone pat him on the shoulder. Route screamed and almost jumped, only to see Georgia looking back at him, a very troubled look on her face. Georgia's lower lip was trembling, as she tried to articulate her words.
—…The…T-tower…Kleydos…I…
— Georgia…
With that, Georgia gave in and let herself fall in Route's arms. She rested her head on his caped shoulder, crying her heart out. Route sighed, placing his arms around her and letting a single tear run down his cheek.
— Oh Route… what will we do? — She managed to hiccup through her crying.
— I don't know… but I'm sure we'll find a way. Somehow. And Endaria will remain just as it is. — Route gave his best trying to sound calm and sure of himself, but inside his heart couldn't be more contorted than it was at that moment.
— How can things ever stay the same?! Without… without the Tower, Endaria is lost! — Georgia clutched tighter to Route, crying harder. She knew that without its power source, Endaria would slowly die, plunging into eternal darkness, never to be spoken of again. But deep inside, even though she tried to ignore it, her heart kept telling her to believe in the High Court and the priests, including apprentices like Route.
— Just… calm down. We must see Aeryon.
— What… — Georgia cleaned her tears. — What about Aeria? The tower meant the world to her…
— Right now, we have to see the prince. We're at his orders only, remember? — It pained him to say it, but it was the truth. Route had no other choice than to follow their primary orders. And Georgia knew that.
— I'll go with you. Aeria might need to cool off for a while before facing her brother. — Georgia managed a weak smile while holding on to Route's arms.
Route nodded, closing his eyes for a few seconds.
— I suppose you're right. Come on, Prince Aeryon is probably worried about us.
Georgia nodded, smiling warmly at Route. He could always comfort her, no matter what was wrong. She always came to him when she had problems, because Route was kind of her secret diary. A Diary that besides hearing her could make her believe that everything would work out… and Route did make everything alright for her. Always.
