Visionaries Episode 1: Broken Promises

“Hey man! After we do this, let’s hit the dance club alright?” hollered someone in the back seat of a sports car as it barreled down a highway at 120 mph, music blaring loudly.

“Whatever...” said the driver. “Do you really think this is a good idea?”

“Kyoudai... listen dude...” said the teen in the back seat as he leaned forward into the front and pointed out the window, “there is no one out here tonight, we’re fine.”

The guy in the passenger seat finally spoke up now. “It’s just that if something happens, Kyoudai is going to hold you personally responsible. You understand that Jordan? This was your idea!”

“Psssh, yeah right it was yours you buffoon! Like Kyoudai could do anything to me anyway, Damien! I mean, look at him, he’s such a pussy. The only reason I hang out with his ass is cause he can drive. He came with us out of his own free-will anyway, right?” Jordan said as he punched Kyoudai’s arm playfully. Kyoudai pretended not to notice and continued focusing on his driving. The car began to speed up as the moon reflected on the wet pavement.

**********************************

“YO!!! That’s our turn dooshbag!!”

Kyoudai slammed on the brakes and cranked the wheel out of shock, causing the car to spin out of control and come to a stop after completing seven rotations.

“Holy shit!” Damien exclaimed.

“Are you trying to kill us?” Jordan asked as he breathed a sigh of relief.

“If it did, would you really care? How much is life worth, honestly?” Kyoudai inquired back coldly.

“Dude, you remind me of one of those Buddhist monks that answer a question with another question. Don’t do that.” Jordan threatened.

Kyoudai simply licked his lips as if annoyed, and put his car back in gear. “You’ll never understand. Living the life you have.” he said as he began to accelerate towards their turn.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean dude?” Jordan asked bluntly, confused. “You know what, screw you. I ain’t saying a damn thing till we get there now.”

Damien just smiled at that remark as Kyoudai pulled onto the road they intended to follow.

**********************************

“Ssssh, there’s a guard coming. Get down.” Damien said quietly to the other two as he ran back to the edge of the tree line from the fence of a military compound that was directly in front of them. When he reached the foliage, he ducked down next to Kyoudai. “Hehehe... Pandora Research & Development Facility! Cleverly disguised as a Marines Supply Depot. This should be fun... they’d never expect 3 teens to know what goes on here, let alone what it really is. We have the element of surprise.”

“Element of surprise?” Kyoudai whispered to Damien, “You act as though we’re going to assault this place or something.”

“Nah, hell no, I’m not stupid, but it would be cool if we could wouldn’t it?” Damien responded as the guard began to pass by the groups position in the tree line. “Jordan, now!” Damien shouted low-key over his shoulder.

Jordan, who had taken the liberty to climb a tree, nodded and jumped over the fence from an overhanging limb, pulled a long, black object out of his jogging suit and caught the patrol guard unaware, sticking the black object against the guards back. Kyoudai instantly heard a nearly inaudible pop and the guards body shook violently in Jordan’s grip, then fell limp.

“I thought you said we weren’t assaulting this place! Killing a guard is definitely going to arouse suspicion, man!” Kyoudai remarked agitated.

“Easy, Jordan didn’t kill him! Now help me with the fence!” Damien said as he pulled a couple clamps that looked like jumper cables, and some bolt cutters out of his backpack. “You cut! I’ll divert the current”

“An electric fence?!”

“Damn straight. They don’t want people just trying to hop the fence at leisure you know! These cables will divert the current through them since they have less electrical resistance than the wire. That way we don’t trigger an alarm by breaking the current with the cutters and we gain easy access all in one fell swoop. ‘Killing two birds with one stone’, I believe that is the phrase.”

“What about the guard?”

“Jordan will take care of him. He’s been following that guy around for weeks, learning his patrol route. He’s going to pose as the guard until you and I are done.”

“I meant what did he do?”

“A co2 Tazer man! Nothing serious! We’re not packin’ heat. C’mon we’re in High School, remember? We’re not old enough.”

“You know that’s not what I meant!” Kyoudai barked as he began to cut the wire with the bolt cutters.

“Yeah... sure...”

“Are you guys done?” Jordan asked as he began to button up the top of his new uniform.

**********************************

A very rustic looking man in a lab coat stood before a trio of suits, all military issue and simply guided his glasses back into the correct spot on his nose. “So, you’re telling me, it’s no longer here?”

“Simply put, yes.” Stated one of the men in uniform.

A female added her input as well, “It’s no longer under our supervision. It can’t be controlled by the limited technology we have at this facility.”

The rustic figure responded as if disappointed, “Not limited, primitive. Correct?”

“Correct.” The third suit answered.

“Will I continue to oversee the project?”

“We have yet to decide your fate as of now. You will continue to work on the other four projects you are supervising. We will let you know if we change our minds, or if we choose to terminate your funding. Just focus on your goals for the others for now.” the woman said.

“The other projects are just as important as the first. Complete them if you can. We’ll need them to be finished before we can continue on the other anyway.” said the third commander.

“Hmmm... yes, I suppose. Very well then.”

“Good, then this is concluded?” The first uniformed man inquired.

“Again, I suppose. But you better promise me that nothing will come to harm my life’s work!”

“Rest assured that nothing will happen. We need this technology more than you know doctor.” the woman interjected before the doctor could continue.

The man sighed. “I’ll hold you to that then.”

“Dismissed.”

The doctor turned and exited the room. He walked slowly down the corridor until he reached a sign that read “Experiment #03: Control Room, Restricted Access”. He calmly placed his hand on a ID pad on the wall and looked toward the door. As he began to speak, a bright yellow light scanned his face and body, “Head Researcher, Nathaniel Cain requesting entry for analysis.”

A soft female computer voice echoed in his head, and not audibly. “Head Researcher, Nathaniel Cain has been granted permission for analysis of Experiment #24397805. This will be the last access to this facility tonight Nathan. Better make the most of it you can huh?” The computer said as the door opened.

“No shit Alissa. Thank you.”

“Your welcome. I’m sorry that we can no longer continue working on Maelstrom. I know how much you put into it. Maybe sometime soon you’ll finish the other experiments, so we can finish it together.”

“Believe me, I’m looking forward to it.” he expressed as he took a couple steps into the room.

“I’m sure you are.”

“Well, if I’m wanting any sleep tonight, we’d better get started huh? Shall we begin?”

“Yes. Starting calibration of core aligners. You may proceed when you feel like it Nathan.”

“Alright, I appreciate it Alissa.” Nathan thanked as he stepped up to a small control panel in the room that belonged to a large, important looking machine that glowed with an eerie dark aura. Nathan clapped his hands together as the door to the control room shut and compressed the air inside. A low hum began as the door made the distinct sealing sound airtight doors do. Right then, two shadowed figures sprinted by the recently shut door.

**********************************

“Wow, he looked important, didn’t he?” Damien asked Kyoudai abruptly. “And, who the hell was he talking to anyway?”

“Uhhh, kinda and who the hell cares...” was Kyoudai’s response. “What is it we’re looking for exactly? Cause since I’m here with you, I think I ought to know.”

“We’re close, real close. Look for a large blast door that says ‘Level 15 Access Required for Entry’ on it in real big yellow letters. I believe it’s right around the corner from here.”

“Should I be worried that you seem to know more about this place than you’re letting on Damien?” Kyoudai hinted, “I mean, we’ve bypassed all the security systems, and I’m sure they have a shitload of them in this place. Let me in on this. What are you doing here?”

“Listen, I asked you to join us cause you can kick some serious ass in a fight despite what Jordan believes, you drive real good, and you have an extremely fast car. As far as the other stuff goes, it’s on a need to know basis only. It’s better for your health that way. Trust me.” Damien replied with a very stern tone. “As far as I’m concerned, you don’t wanna know what we’re after, you may try to stop us.”

“So bringing you here, and sneaking in to a highly top-secret military compound wasn’t enough?”

“Nope.” Damien stated quickly with no hesitation. “Listen... we’re right around the corner from our destination, so what I need you to do is put on this little contraption,” he continued as he pulled out a small electronic machine that somewhat resembled a hand buzzer, “and rush the guard around there. This thing will emit EMP and knock out the cameras that are watching the entrance and I believe you will be fast enough to prevent the guard from being able to do a damn thing.”

“Who the hell are you... Damien? I thought I knew you better than this. You’ve never seemed this professional in the seven years I’ve known you.”

Damien smiled. “You never really know someone completely. It doesn’t matter does it? Now, hurry up.”

Kyoudai put the small EMP generator on his shirt as if it were a button and flipped the switch. He then rose to his feet and sprinted around the corner as fast as he could. It all happened so fast that by the time he realized what he was doing, Damien was next to him typing on a homemade hacking device to open the door. Damien looked at Kyoudai.

“Good job man. We’re almost home free.”

Kyoudai simply stared at Damien as if puzzled at what had just transpired.

“Okay! We’re in. We need to do this fast, before the door shuts. We probably have... a minute and a half approximately. Chop, chop, no slacking now.” Damien said as he darted between the opening blast doors. Kyoudai followed out of curiosity. In front of him was a very impressive laboratory. There were radiation warning markers everywhere, which made Kyoudai wonder if there was nuclear weapons research taking place here. Kyoudai noticed Damien was examining the shelves thoroughly.

“What are we looking for?” He asked quickly.

“Something in a really extravagant looking hourglass. It should be some kind of red syrup like liquid.”

“OK... whatever...” Kyoudai said annoyed as he began to look around. As he began to search for the container Damien had described, he came across a multitude of other interesting things as well. He picked up one in particular that seemed to have a weird mist or gas contained in it marked “Dead Oxygen”. He rotated it around in his hands to help him get a better look.

“HEY!!! We’re on a time crunch here! Focus!” Damien shouted.”

Kyoudai put the container back on the shelf slowly and resumed his search. “Sorry.” Damien seemed to not even notice Kyoudai’s apology. Right then, Kyoudai came across a large silver cylinder that had a glass front. Inside was a very deformed hourglass full of a blood red substance. “Is this it?” he asked.

Damien ran around the shelves to Kyoudai’s location and took a short look at the container. “That’s it man. Let’s go... now!” he exclaimed as he grabbed the container and jetted out the blast doors which we’re now slowly closing. Kyoudai followed behind him.

Damien grabbed a button switch out of his pocket as he was running down the hall, which caught Kyoudai off guard. He doesn’t have a bomb does he? As Damien fumbled it around to where he could press the button, there was no hesitation. All of a sudden a slight rumble came from underneath the floor and the lights in the corridor flickered for a second. Seconds later, as Kyoudai and Damien reached their exit point, the sirens in the base began to sound. Damien burst out the door and continued sprinting toward the hole in the fence that they had made only minutes ago, Kyoudai right behind him.

“What are you thinking? A BOMB?!!”

“Whatever that was man, it wasn’t me! This switch was to let Jordan know we’re done here. You get under the fence first alright?”

Kyoudai didn’t hesitate at all as he fell to his stomach and pulled himself under the fence. As he turned around and Damien handed him the container, he noticed the exterior lights of the compound switched on, illuminating everything in sight with a bright white. Damien then slid under the fence himself as an indistinguishable figure in the distance shouted, “OVER THERE!” and began running in their direction.

“Shit! They’re onto us!” Kyoudai exclaimed.

“Now you know why I chose you to help us!” Damien hollered at him as he tossed the container into Kyoudai’s car. “C’mon man, hurry!”

“What about Jordan?”

“Dammit! We can’t wait on him!”

“Guys hang on! I’m coming!” Jordan’s voice echoed over the sirens.

The indistinguishable figure drew closer. Then, Kyoudai could make out who it was. The figure was Jordan. He was running with a slight limp in his left leg as he hobbled along. As he reached the fence he ducked underneath it and stood up as quick as possible.

“I apologize for being late, something else is happening and I didn’t want to blow my cover. This base is actually being attacked by someone else. I ended up getting in a gunfight. MAN that was a rush! I got shot though, so they asked me if I could make it to the infirmary and I said yes, so I could get out of there. So, here I am. They’re not even aware of our little snatch and go operation over here, so let’s take advantage and get goin’.”

“Well, with only a minor hitch, I guess this could be summed up as a success huh?” Damien inquired.

“Yep, I even got a free M-49 out of the deal, hahaha!” Jordan exclaimed.

“Good luck finding ammo for that thing. Can we get out of here now?” Kyoudai asked politely.

“Sure, you earned your keep. Now get us outta here quickly, and I may double your bonus.” Damien stated simply.

All three guys piled into the car, Jordan taking the front seat this time due to his injury. As the sound of helicopters taking flight began to fill the air, and sirens drowned out everything else, a high-pitched tire squeal would be unnoticeable as the group departed.

***************THREE DAYS LATER***************

“You know, I never thought we’d get away with what we pulled the other night. I figured for sure the Kyoudai was gonna rat us out! I mean, with him having a girlfriend and all.” Jordan said as he lifted a beer can into the night sky, “But, you’re alright man. I guess you can pull your weight.”

“I’d still like to know what the hell we ripped off from that place. I mean, they had some weird names for some of that shit in that lab. ‘Dead Oxygen’? ‘Pale Water’? ‘Neaubiem’? What the hell does ‘Neaubiem’ translate to anyway?”

“’Ghost Blood’.” Damien answered.

“What...?” Kyoudai looked puzzled. “It’s sounds like the stuff in there were ingredients for a spell or a ritual.”

“Maybe.” said Jordan plainly. “Maybe not. It doesn’t matter, we got what we went there for.”

Damien patted Kyoudai on the shoulder, “Yes we did, and we’ll cover it for now man. Jordan, you hold down the hatches, Kyoudai and I are goin’ for a drive. We need to celebrate together.”

“Okay.” Kyoudai agreed.

The two teens got up and headed for the garage. As they started to get in the car, Damien spoke up.

“Go wherever you feel like man, I’ll buy. You’ve earned it.”

“I really don’t have any hang-outs other than the graveyard, you know that.” Kyoudai replied as he got in the drivers seat.

“Yeah, I guess you are a little gothic like that sometimes.” Damien said as he got in.

Kyoudai pressed the button to open the garage door, and started the car.

“You know, this car is a real beauty. How do you ever make ends meet with bills and stuff, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“Heh, I don’t know, I guess I’m not bogged down by other possessions reeling me in. All I wanted material-wise was a badass car, and now that I’ve got that, I couldn’t care less about other stuff like video games or going to the movies.” Kyoudai explained as he headed down the dark, traffic-less road.

“Well, I guess you’re set for life then now. Damien stated as he put his fist out for Kyoudai to catch something from his hand.

“Huh?”

“Take it. It’s something I’ve had for a long time, and I want you to make use of it. If you don’t, I’m going to make you regret it somehow. This thing means a lot to me, so use it, please.”

Damien dropped a pendant of some sort into Kyoudai’s open palm. Kyoudai gave another puzzled look. Then his attention was diverted by the silhouette of some kind of animal following along the road next to his car. The image disappeared almost as soon as he saw it. Damien continued as if he didn’t notice Kyoudai’s distraction.

“It’s a seer medallion. They say that those who use them can see the inner soul of people and realize their true potential. I used it on you to find out if you were the right guy for our little mission the other night. And it was right. Use this thing correctly, and you can make it rich, or rule the world. There is only one other on the planet. Keep it safe, or I’ll kill you myself. Hahaha.”

“Umm... I guess, thank you.”

“Damn skippy! That’s the most valuable thing I own! Don’t you lose it!”

He continued driving down the deserted road at a decent speed while Damien continued to blab on and on about this and that. Kyoudai’s attention was elsewhere however... as about five minutes passed Damien finally noticed something was up.

“Hey dude, you even listening to me anymore?”

“Sorry, not really, I thought I saw something running along the road awhile back.”

“Huh? What the hell are you talking about, there wasn’t anything out there!”

Kyoudai’s response was cut off before he could even muster it out of his mouth as a dark panther-like beast ran out in front of his car and snarled at him. The beast was not natural however, and this caused Kyoudai to lose his composure as he slammed on the brakes yet again to try and avoid a wreck with the animal.

“Yo dude, what the hell are you freaking out for?” Damien exclaimed loudly.

All of a sudden the beast hunched down and pounced at Kyoudai’s car as some kind of force slammed into the back end of his vehicle pushing it forward and sideways all at once. The beast just phased through the windshield as if it were an illusion and seemed to grab a hold of both teens as their car began to flip violently shattering glass, twisting metal, and tearing at their bodies. As the car finally came to a stop, the beast on top of the two boys tore at them, yet did no physical damage and Kyoudai saw a bright light engulf him as he gawked at the mangled body of Damien who had not been wearing a seatbelt. He looked down and noticed a large chunk of metal protruding from his chest. The last view Kyoudai saw while looking through the body of the weightless panther-like beast was a slightly beat up military vehicle slowly passing their car, and a man hollering “Yeah, they’re dead! Let’s go!”. That’s when another form of light engulfed him.

**********************************

Kyoudai...

Kyoudai...

Kyoudai Renmaru...

“Huh?”

Kyoudai Renmaru, you have been entrusted with a task... you must wake up...

Kyoudai opened his eyes and squinted as an intense white light shined all around him.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

Kyoudai, you have seen the apparitions... you have a task... you must join the forces against darkness, for only you and those like you may battle in Purgatory...

“What the hell are you talking about? Who are you?”

You have seen what few have seen...

“Huh? I asked who are you? There is too many voices.”

We are who we are...

“Annoying isn’t it?” a man’s voice called out.
Kyoudai turned around in a full circle and saw nothing.

“Above you nitwit.” the voice beamed.

Kyoudai looked above him as such. What he saw was a boy, who looked to be about 16 or 17 years old, wild hair, and pure bright white eyes with no pupils. He spoke in a defyingly deep voice for someone of his appearance which seemed to echo as well. The boy appeared to be sitting on a small puff of a cloud. He then stood up and stepped off the cloud to come floating over towards Kyoudai with an extremely solemn, but peaceful look on his face.

“I am Rociel. I am entrusted with the task of being your guide, Kyoudai.”

“Guide to what... how do you know my name?”

“Oh, I know more than that, Mr. Renmaru. You sure do ask a lot of questions for someone of your age. Take it easy, you’re in no danger here.”

“Then, may I ask who are you, where am I, and what the hell is going on?”

“Ok, to answer your questions, first things first I guess. Like I said, I am Rociel. I am an angel in service to Solomon, one of the High Angels, and I am a member of the , which has a very, very important goal for humanity to achieve. You, right now are in limbo, the Almighty has taken the liberty to see this happen since you saw an apparition, which makes you a target for a number of things, enemies & allies, dreams, and tasks. You will be asked to become a Hastat warrior, those who fight for the independence of humanity.”

Kyoudai decided now would be a good point to pass his hand over his head. “Sorry, I don’t believe you’re getting through.”

“Well, I know you don’t believe in God, or even a form of one, but there is a higher form of benevolence than you Mr. Renmaru. This will be a big dose of reality that you will have no concept of at all.”

“You’re losing me dude.”

“Take a moment to listen then...”

“Okay... whatever...”

“Ahem... a long time ago, back when Lucifer, or as you may call, Satan, tried to usurp God in Heaven, another being decided to show itself. It took the liberty of using the chaos in Heaven to create a world of it’s own, and layered it between all realms of existence. In essence, this entity created it’s own realm that was branched between and intertwined with the ones that God had created. When Hell was created as a prison for Satan and his followers, this entity also expanded it’s realm to intertwine and layer between it and all other realms as well.”

“How does this concern me? If I’m dead, then why don’t you send me where I belong? I don’t have anything to do with this ‘realms intertwined’ nonsense.”

“Actually you have a larger part of this than you think, just let me explain it.”

“Whatever...”

“Yes, whatever...” Rociel said sarcastically with a raised eyebrow. “In this realm, which humans have dubbed Purgatory, live a species of creature that the creator of Purgatory also created for a purpose. What this purpose is, is unclear, but we know that Purgatory prevents the souls of the dead from reaching their destination, whether it be Heaven or Hell. All souls that have passed on to a higher plane of consciousness have been trapped in Purgatory. Only those souls who have discovered a way out, or have a strong enough will are able to continue on the journey that the Almighty has bestowed on them. This is our mission, to free all the souls of humanity that are trapped in Purgatory, and make it right for those who will pass on in the future. You are the key to that Kyoudai Renmaru. You and the others who have seen the apparitions from Purgatory, the ones who ferry the souls to their home realm, are entrusted with the power to set things right. The Almighty has not been able to discover what the true intention of this entity that created Purgatory is. This is your task, and by serving this task, you will be allowed to continue your life as if you had never left. You may return to your precious Tanika that I hear so much about. If you deny your chance, you will end up trapped with the rest of the souls in Purgatory for the Almighty has only the ability to stall your trip to Purgatory, or prevent it. The Lord cannot detach Purgatory from Heaven, nor send you straight to Heaven. You have only two choices, no matter how much they must appall you.”

“How do you know of Tanika?” Kyoudai said defensively, paying no regard to the rest that was said.

“I said I know more than you think.”

“Two choices huh? Well, I guess since this all seems so fanatical and is most likely a dream or hallucination, what harm could there be in saying, sure I’ll help you.”

“Well, good decision, but this is not a dream Mr. Renmaru. This is truth. Only time will tell whether you believe or not. Watch for me on the second day of the next full moon.” With that said, the man introducing himself as Rociel faded into nothingness, and so did the bright light around Kyoudai as it was replaced by pitch black.

YOU... DARE... BECOME... MY... ENEMY?...

“What’s going on now?” Kyoudai questioned the darkness.

POMPOUS... BASTARD..., YOU... SHALL... RECEIVE... NO... MERCY...

I... WILL... WIPE... YOUR... EXISTENCE... FROM... ALL... REALMS!!!

With that, the darkness was lightened a little and Kyoudai could hear something that sounded distant, but audible. “CLEAR!!!” Kyoudai’s eyes opened suddenly, letting in a lot of light and his body heaved forward as if he was punched in the gut, but was forced back down. He could see a multitude of men and women dressed in white doctors outfits that were all slightly stained red in places. That’s when the pain set in. It was driven into him like a freight train without any warning. In the background he could hear a woman explaining his situation to someone. Something about a ten-month recovery after three in the hospital, but that’s if he could make it through the next five days. Kyoudai thought to himself after focusing through the pain, I was in a car accident right? That’s it, it was just an accident. Why do I have this feeling like I’m putting something off? Right then he saw a doctor walking by with the medallion that Damien had given him. The medallion was broken, and the doctor simply tossed it into the trash can. Kyoudai laid on the operating table in pure pain wondering how this was going to effect him.
